Okay, I know this is a chain, but I still love it. The inside is really spacious, and the coffee is good and strong. All kinds of extremely fresh pastries, including a blueberry scone with wild blueberry jam and fresh ricotta cheese–yum! A little pricey, but I'd definitely go back often if I lived in NY.
Loved the interior with wood tables and nice artisan feeling overall. Menu is good, however I found it a little bit expensive for portions they serve. I love their baked goods and prefer that to a sit down option.
The Upper West Side is a fascinating walk for me. It seems each block alternates between chains and unique restaurants, cafes and stores that sell weird odds and ends. My girlfriend and I were looking for a place to chill out after a long day of walking and Le Pain Quotidien seemed ideal, and I was happy as I had been meaning to visit one of these locations for ages but never had the opportunity.
The interior greets you first with the money shot of desserts. Chocolate mousse, tartlets and cookies practically screamed "Take us home!" I resisted since we were there to sit and snack. The interior is beautiful, with a nice, simplistic design of exposed brick, wood panels on the walls and the feature the chain is most known for, one looooong communal dining table down the middle of the restaurant. We decided to take a seat off to the side where there was a nice bench along the wall. The place was really nice to look at and I found myself staring at the decor quite a few times before ordering.
Our waitress was a bit overwhelmed, but did the best she could. Somehow she was the only one on staff for the entire place, so she was running around like crazy. I think we may have gone during a shift change of some sort because when we came in, one waitress greeted us but we never saw her again, then another appeared, it was slightly odd.
Anyhow, we ordered the egg salad on bread with capers and anchovies. This was an olive oil based egg salad and not mayo, so a big plus in the health department. The dish was presented beautifully, laid out with some greens and radish and cucumber slices lined up vertically, really nice. The salad was very tasty, but you really needed the bread to balance out the saltiness of the anchovies and capers.
I also had the Red tea, which is given to you as a teabag that you then put in a bowl instead of a traditional mug or tea cup. You are given a small tea pot of hot water and you pour yourself. I liked this option as it let me control the temperature of the tea. The flavor was floral and berry-like, not unexpected considering the color. I really enjoyed it despite my general preference towards more intense flavored black teas or more fragrant jasmine.
Service was prompt, despite how swamped our waitress was so I was impressed. Towards the end however, I could see how stressed she was, but I tried to be understanding about it.
I have to say that a lot of items on Le Pain Quotidien's menu looked delicious, and my first experience with them has convinced me to try them again at some point. I really wish I could give more of a 3.5 star since I don't really feel like I had their best dish, but I'm feeling generous so I'll leave it at four for now.
Great bread! I've always liked the food here and the coffee is tip top too. This is a great spot for a quick lunch or brunch. One thing that sucks is that they run out of stuff from time to time, but that's to be expected I suppose, since they have a pretty good turnover.
On the downside, the service here can be a bit lax at times, even aloof. I will probably continue to stop by simply because the food is solid. However, it would be great if they could sort out the manpower issues.
I'll be totally honest – I'm not a fan of LPQ in general but this specific location is just… Just pass it over ladies and gents.
Weird seating inside + kind of grumpy service is not worth burnt coffee and convenience.
I will say the outdoor seating during spring/summer is lovely but spend your $$ elsewhere.
Very good. Fresh and delicious, very satisfying. The seating is old fashioned and you will likely get to know other diners as a result.
Can't go too wrong with a Le Pain. I went there for brunch, so to speak, but I wasn't quite in the mood for a salad or tartine, and I didn't really feel like pastries either. That kind of left me with…oatmeal. Ha! However, it was a great bowl, rich with bananas, walnuts, the perfect amount of pure maple syrup, and a gorgeous mint leaf to top a beautifully assembled bowl. Their black iced tea is always pretty on the ball as well.
Service was much better tableside as opposed to at the pastry counter. The beau wanted a post-brunch chocolate chip cookie, and service was a bit lazy and dismissive. Our waiter, on the other hand, was extremely kind and attentive.
Favorite brunch place! Great place to sit down with my laptop and a nice big salad + bottomless tea. Love their selection of jams and spreads!
