Friend and I were both craving Chinese food, so he suggested that we stop by Legend Upper West. We ordered mapo tofu and sliced beef in chili oil (水煮牛肉) to share over rice. I can't really take spicy well and asked for the beef to be mild. I should have known better that there was no way a dish essentially made from chili oil could be anything but super spicy. Within two bites, my entire mouth and tongue were turning numb and eventually to the point that I could no longer taste anything. I chugged down cups and cups of ice water, but to no avail. I do remember both dishes being very flavorful and tasty though. My friend, who's a huge fan of spicy, loved the tofu and the beef. He claims that this is one of the more authentic spots for Sichuan food in UW, which I'd agree.
We both left feeling pretty full, him satisfied and me with a tingling tongue.
Hands down the WORST Chinese food I've ever had. We essentially spent $30 on mush for two that we didn't even finish. It was just terrible. I'm just glad it came with white rice so we had something to eat and didn't go hungry that night. Truly horrific and such a giant waste of money. I will NEVER go back to Legend again.
It's way too greasy and way too pricey. Mu Xu Chicken is more sliced green bell peppers than chicken, and the lamb with scallions had enough oil to fill up a hummer's tank. The sichuan style dumplings and dan dan noodles were no better – both were dry. The sichuan cold sliced spicy beef was okay. Maybe I should have gone with the General Tso's Chicken and Chow Fun instead…ordering the more traditional sichuan food was a bad idea.
Came here for the lunch special. The food was great but the service was bad. However, I will be coming back because I want to try some more of their authentic dishes. Also, the actual entrees are twice the size of the lunch special so it would be better just to get a full entree if you're hungry.
I'm a little biased since this place took over the spot from my former favorite BBQ joint, Rack & Soul. This place serves Szechuan cuisine and the offerings seem fairly authentic.
The food is priced for students and the portions are decent. There's a dearth of Chinese food (that's not takeout) in the Columbia University area so it's a welcome addition. It's not the greatest food in the world but its decent.
I've ordered from legend a number of times now, and have learned that whatever delivery estimate you get, it's going to take the high end estimate (on seamless etc) or more. It's a bit slow.
Also, the dry sauteed green beans, in the VEGETABLE section, have meat on them. Just an FYI to make sure you ask for no ground meat on them. Can't say this for other veggies, but as always, ma po tofu has pork but you can get it without.
I came here for the first time yesterday for lunch with one of my colleagues–it's one of his favorite spots in the area, and now I know why. This is by far the best Chinese food I've ever had. Lunch specials are either $7.50 or $8.50 and they include soup (wonton, egg drop, or hot and sour), a main dish, and a side of white or brown rice. I got the hot and sour soup and Kung Pao chicken, both were absolutely delicious and filled with flavor. Service is fast too – great place for a quick bite if you're in a hurry!
Not sure our 'hood needed another Chinese food restaurant, but that's cool. This one is ok.
I really dug my beef with bok choy and mushrooms, though there could have been more mushrooms.
The chicken with spicy BBQ was a little less interesting — not spicy at all.
Scallion pancakes for $5.50 are a rip off. Don't get them.
Two dishes came with a big rice.
