Lenny’s Bagels
“I've only ever found myself here in the afternoons since that's when I'm on the UWS to babysit, but I've had really solid experiences here.”
“It's a shame I moved to Boston, but when I come back to visit, I always come here and get at least half a dozen to take back with me.”
“Firm on the outside and soft but still with great texture on the inside.”

At 8am in the morning traveling to the Upper West side in anticipation for a 19 hour shift of work on a Saturday…one word…SUCKS. But when I accidentally found Lenny's Bagels by chance I couldn't wait to get to work to burn off all this energy. First and foremost, their selection of bagels alone is INCREDIBLE. I would not consider myself as a bagel expert but I am a BIG FAN of them. So when I saw names like My 2 Son (sunflower, poppy, sesame, egg), Bad Boy (egg, poppy, onion, pumpernickel) and New Horizon (oat, barley, flaxseed, millet and raisin) it is hard to resist trying them. They also have my 2 absolute favorites such as Blueberry and Cinnamon Raisin that I usually order with the raisin & walnut cream cheese spread (raisin FANATIC…YUM!). I never heard of a Lox spread (smoked salmon) but they have it as well for all seafood lovers. They also have excellent bagel sandwiches for about 6 bucks (try the turkey one, they don't skimp on the meat and it is always filling) The only negative thing that I can think of are their bathrooms that could be a bit cleaner and a little less hazardous to get to (down a narrow stairwell). But seriously if you really need a bathroom just go to Starbucks…don't we all? They do get busy even on weekends so GO VISIT = D.
Pretty decent bagel. Pretty decent spread. Pretty decent prices.
But DAMN. "The Regulars" are quite pushy. I attempted to move out of the way to allow the patron behind me to order, and all I got was a dirty look.
Shoot. I was trying to let you get a bagel, sir, not hold up the works, I swear!
I've had really good experiences during my last two visits to Lenny's. The first time, I picked up a few bagels to go and was very impressed by them (i'm new to the upper west side bagel scene). They had a crunchy exterior, and a soft interior just like a bagel should. Both were everything bagels and both were actually covered in the everything coating unlike many other places.
After that experience, I obviously decided that the next time I went I would test their bagel sandwich game. I was not disappointed. I ordered an everything bagel with egg & cheese and the other person in my party ordered the same with bacon. We both devoured our sandwiches. I will be back! Good service from what I have experienced as well. The lines are a bit chaotic but that's to be expected since there seem to be few bagel places in the area.
The true Lenny's bagels…
Get there when they are coming out warm and fresh and you'll understand why this is the only true Lenny's.
I like bagels. I don't love bagels. I popped in here a smoked salmon bagel sandwich. It was about $8, which is expensive for a bagel, but less expensive than most salmon bagels I've had. Salmon was good. The tomatoes tasted fresh. The bagel itself was light and fluffy, not dense and heavy like the kind that require a lot of chewing time. Overall, I really enjoyed it. The service for a late Saturday morning was pretty fast. It does make me wonder why Absolute Bagels gets that ridiculously long line.
Not as good as absolute bagels but better than the ones they've got at Murray's Sturgeon so not a bad middle spot to be in. I'd buy some bagels here and some fish at Murray's for a strong combo.
Lenny's is definitely a go-to bagel spot in the Manhattan Valley area. While I can't say the bagels are as good as Absolute just up the way, the staff here are super nice and efficient. Prices are comparable to other bagel places in the city, and you can tell that the locals still really dig this spot.
Bizarrely green scallion cream cheese… they also apparently charge you extra to toast, cut, and put spread on your bagels, what?
