Little Basil

“The beef is cooked to perfect tenderness and the coconut curry is sweet, just the way I like it.”

“P.S. They do BYOB which is a an A plus and nice music too 😉
Love everything about Little Basil.”

“I'd recommend the Tamarind Fish, which looks more like a work of art than a dish, or the Salmon Pad Kapraw.”

  1. Super cute little Thai place with impeccable service.
I got really excited when I saw "fresh coconut juice" on the menu, as I thought that meant coconut water straight out of the young coconut, but alas, when I asked, it was canned.
The place is BYOB which is nice – we didn't take advantage of that, but will definitely keep it in mind for the future.
The pad thai is a steal and I love that you can have it with tilapia. Super delicious – a bit on the sweet side, but otherwise great.
I love that in the summer they have mango sticky rice for dessert!! We split one among the 3 of us and it was completely heavenly.
We went to a show at the Gramercy Theater afterwards. Perfect location. Will definitely be back if I'm in the area in the mood for Thai.

  2. My family took me here for mother's day to get me out the house (I love home!!!! – just to put it out there). I like Thai whenever I get the opportunity because it's not always an option when you're dining out, especially with big groups. They place wasn't too big but it was intimate – We found out about it from a flyer that was sent to our home. When we arrived, we were greeted immediately and didn't have to wait too long for a table.. I was a little iffy about going and the possible service since we went an hour before closing but I was like we got there at 6pm instead of 9pm… We weren't rushed or hurried and they even sat people about 20 minutes before they're posted closing time…

The place wasn't noisy at all, the music was good because I was jamming to Whitney Houston, and the food was good!… We order some Thai wings, Springs Rolls, Fried Calamari, Chicken Fried Rice, and Roasted Duck! …for drinks my scaredy cats stuck to soda but I had the Iced Thai Tea – hands down the drink was the bomb!!! However, the place only got three stars this time around because the service was iffy. The waitress that took our order , I don't know if she didn't hear us clearly or if her English wasn't that well but she messed up our order for the appetizers because we sent one dish back and someone from the back of the house even came to our table to re-verify our entire order – and we didn't find out she messed up one of the main entrees until we got the bill… at that point the food was eaten, the night was wrapping up and it was Mother's Day so I wasn't in the mood to fight for justice and bill adjustments because IT WAS MY DAY OFF!

But like I said the food was good so I'll most likely give them another shot…

  3. Ordered in. Got the drunken noodles but the noodles weren't the usual thick/flat rice noodles. They were more like Pad Thai noodles….. Which was very disappointing. Also there were no vegetables and only a couple pieces of chicken. I'm sure their lunch specials are worth it but maybe order from somewhere else for dinner!

  4. Little basil was quite the treat! My friends and I were looking for a nice byob dinner spot, and we found it. It's a tiny restaurant with tasteful decorations.

They allow you to bring one bottle of wine for no extra charge. Additional bottles are $10. That's a bonus to their excellent food options. I went with their summer special noodles, which come with a meat of your choice in a broth. The flavor was complex and wonderful. Since it was such a hot day when I went, I ordered mild to medium spice instead of going hotter, and it was perfect.

Pro tip: wear a shirt that is splatter proof if you get their summer special noodles or anything that comes in a broth! We all ended up being pelted with it. But it was worth it!

  5. I been here a bunch of times for lunch and it never disappoints. Only thing I can say is that around lunch time this place is packed. I always get the lunch special with the steamed dumplings, chicken soup and the drunken noodles. It has just enough spice in it which is awesome and the portions are good.

  6. Came here during the lunch special.  The food was on the sweeter side which I really like.  I tried the pad see ew and pad thai.  For $8 you get a standard lunch special but I thought the main dish was bigger than other thai places with similar lunch specials.  I will be back!

  7. Little Basil boasts a wonderful setting with warm lights, a bustling bar, and artsy photographs of Thailand. It makes for a welcoming introduction to one of the most popular Thai restaurants in New York. The service is so gracious… you get the feeling your waiter would be mortally offended if he made a mistake.

Holy Basil's extensive, traditional Thai cuisine is several notches above its competitors. This is a good place to deviate from your standard pad Thai order: Try the melt-in-your-mouth steak salad, the mixed-seafood red curry with pineapple or any of the dishes containing the restaurant's namesake herb. Vegetarians will find plenty of fresh options, and everyone should finish with a bowl of fruit-infused rice pudding. I personally recommend getting the Lychee Martini!

  8. By far my favorite Thai place in the city. I highly recommend their lunch special that is $10 for a tom yum soup or house salad, dumplings or spring rolls plus a large entree (is this real life?).

Price aside, the food is phenomenal – I would pay $50 for their pad thai. Really authentic flavors (coconut curry is to die for), large helpings and one of those places you're truly sad you've finished your meal even though you're stuffed to the brim. Service is great and the food always comes out quickly.

Great spot for a casual dinner catching up with friends or a quick lunch at the bar. Nothing fancy but definitely has character. Truly worth the visit!!
