Little Mexico

“As for past reviews saying the bodega itself is cramped and dingy – the family remodeled the inside so there is now more space (and seats) to wait for your food.”

“The food from here is amazing, tried the tacos and tamales, all delicious.”

  1. Oh my God, I can't stop ordering food from this place.

This review is NOT for the place as a bodega, but as a take out place. The bodega itself is cramped, dingy, and doesn't offer much selection, but it's almost like Mexican speakeasy in that you'd never know what kind of delicious food they concoct behind the counter.

And delicious is an understatement. This is the most genuine, authentic Mexican food I have ever eaten. It truly tastes like I'm eating in someone's house and their mom crossed the border just to cook for me.

One of my favorite things to get from Little Mexico are the tamales. They're available only on the weekends since they're so labor intensive to make, but no joke, they're one of the highlights of my Saturdays and Sundays. I have no idea which ones I've been eating because I can't tell which is which, but they offer four different kinds: Mole, verdes, salsa roja, and rajas. Enough heat in most of these to make you sweat a little if you aren't used to spicy food (which I'm not).

The prices here are dirt cheap and the portions are great for the price. Tacos and Tostadas are mostly $2.25, Tortas $6, Cemitas, $6.50, Quesadillas, Gorditas, and Sopes $2.50, and Sandwiches $5.95. They also have plates with rice beans and salad for some unknown price since I haven't tried those yet.

I usually order the Chorizo Cemita, which has an excellent portion of chopped chorizo, avocado, queso fresco, and whatever other magic is in it. Spicy!

-2 stars because unfortunately, the food is inconsistent. While generally good, the tamales as well as the meat on the tacos I've gotten has occasionally been dry.
Also, the arroz con leche is really bland; it should have a little more cinnamon or ideally clove, but it ends up tasting exactly like the avena.

Call this place in advance so you can swing by and pick it up, usually takes about 10-15 minutes, or use their free delivery.

    Seriously love this hidden gem.

  2. Juan sure does know how to put a taco together. With some lime juice and the red & green salsa… damn, could very well be better than the taco truck.

He takes calls, so just call in advanced (say when you get off at Astoria Boulevard on the N/Q) and let him know what you want. Depending on the meat, prices are between $2-$2.50 for a taco.

  3. Low-cost, filling, tasty meals? Yes, please. I ordered a sausage and egg torta, and it was pretty good. It was the most expensive sandwich at $6.50, so I'd be curious to see what the other offerings are like. If I had to choose between something here and let's say De Mole, I'd go with the latter, although Little Mexico is a couple of dollars cheaper.

The one thing that really bugged me was the wait time – it took 15 minutes for them to make the torta. That's the longest I've ever waited at any deli-like establishment, and on top of the tiny place doesn't have tables where you can sit down and wait like La Luna (which also has solid sandwiches, but the wait time for them to cook something is in the 5-10 range).

But if you're in the area and looking for a nice, filling meal at a low price but are okay with the wait, be sure to check out the place.
