This review is purely for the All You Can Eat (AYCE) on Tuesday night. Please refer to my previous review for the full service of this restaurant. I previously rated this place 5 star, but decided to take off two stars due to the limited AYCE menu, and the long wait.
Little Sheep offers AYCE on Tuesday for $23.95, I've been wanting to try it because we usually spend a lot more than $50 between the two of us when we come here. Therefore, I thought it would be a bargain for us to be able to eat more and spend less. We got here a little before 8pm, and there was a massive line around the front entrance. The hostess said the wait was approximately 20 minutes. Unfortunately, it was much much longer than 20 minutes, we ended up waiting for nearly an hour and did not get seated until after 9pm.
Even though "technically" we can stay and eat for 90 minutes as part of the AYCE price package, the kitchen closes at 9:30pm. They were still seating people after we sat down, and I thought it was kind of silly as they knew the kitchen was closing soon. We put in our orders right away, which included the usual meat dishes, i.e. pork, beef and lamb, as well as a number of our "go-to" items, such as tripe, tendon, fish ball and enoki mushroom. As I mentioned above, the AYCE menu has limited selection vis-a-vis its normal menu, most notably the lamb meatballs, fishball with roe and sugar pea sprouts. I saw the table next to us ordered a lot of shrimp, which I think is probably the most "bang for your buck".
We ate pretty fast, so we were able to sneak an extra orders of meat before the kitchen closed. Ultimately, I think we ate more than $50 worth of food, but I don't think we will do AYCE again. I don't like how limited the menu is, one of the MAIN reasons I come here is for the amazing meatballs, and that was not on the AYCE menu. Moreover, the wait seemed extraordinarily long for a weekday. I do not want to get in the habit of eating at 9pm. Lastly, and this is not limited to AYCE, I've noticed the last few times we've been here that the soup base has gotten more salty. I am not sure if it's because they changed their recipe, or the kitchen was having an off night or two. Regardless, I would have to drink tons of water to overcompensate the saltiness. Overall, this is still one of the best hotpot places in the area, but unless you can get here super early on a Tuesday, skip the AYCE night.
I'm generally not a fan of cook-it-yourself dining or cooking-as-a-show but I can be down for hot pot. Meats taste fresh and a sliced thin, so they cook quickly without turning into rubber. Lamb shoulder, pork belly, and ribeye were all delicious (I would pass on the "prime" versions – that's a waste for essentially boiling your meat). Bok choy is a good choice from the vegetables – cooks quickly and is easy to retrieve from the pot. The spicy broth is usually not too spicy and tastes much better than the plain, but you can always spice it up from the sauce bar.
I wish they would wrap up some of their aromatics in a cheesecloth pouch; it's very hard to find your food among all the flotsam and jetsam, often resulting in your (expensive) sliced meat or dumpling disappearing into the abyss. Biting into cardamom pods or cloves is a real downer. Different/larger slotted spoons would also be appreciated, as you don't always want to get broth with your food. Tables can get very cramped with all the serving plates, your own food plate, and beverage – a bad combination when there's a huge pot of boiling liquid sitting in the center of the table. Restaurant itself can get very loud – not much sound dampening combined with close quarters and bubbling pots make it hard to have a chat with your table.
The menu can be deceiving – plan on 30+$/person unless you are eating very light.
Little sheep was very very delicious. I liked the sauce bar, which had a selection of fixin's to mix up together into your own sauce bowl.
We ordered a bunch of stuff I can't honestly remember (even though I took pictures), but what I still do remember was how spicy the broth was. It wasn't even the spiciness level that was crazy – it was the amount of chili peppers that were in the broth. It got to the point where I couldn't find the food I had put in because the chili peppers covered it up! As our food started to dwindle, we had to scoop out the peppers to start finding the stuff that had made its way to the lower half of the pot and we piled two separate plates with peppers. It was kind of ridiculous how much there was, but it's funny that the soup still wasn't too spicy.
Aside from that one gripe, I found the quality of the food to be really good. Also, we didn't realize until we got there that it was BYOB. If we knew, we would've brought a few cold beers to go along with the dinner.
I've passed this place a bunch of times and finally decided to give it a try. I ordered the house broth, rib eye, scallops, pork belly, mushrooms, fish cake, bamboo shoots, and sesame side dish (bread). The broth was brought out almost immediately. The meat and seafood shortly thereafter. The veggies and sesame dish were last. As we ate, the server kept refilling the broth. I felt like I was at one of the Brazilian ridizio places where you have to show a red or green block for yes / no on the broth refills! lol! The broth is tasty and the slices of rib eye meat were perfectly thinly sliced! I loved the woodear mushrooms and the slightly crunchy texture it gives when you bite on them. The pork belly had the right amount of fat on them to render a little in the broth. Their hot sesame dish was fantastic. Whatever it is they give you to dip it in was so delicious! All in all I would come back to try the other meat options. The service is super fast and I'm guessing turnover is fast topic staff is waiting to clean up your table right away! I can see how this place gets packed in the winter!
I came here with my family (party of 11) on a Sunday afternoon. Since we had a large party they decided to put us in a private party room, which we were very appreciative of. As we were about to make our drinks order, they informed us that the area was shutting down its water…so washing your hands, and forget about going to the restroom. Obviously this wasn't their fault but it was such an annoying inconvenient. Then the entire afternoon kind of went downhill from there. Several of my family members wanted soda, but they also informed us that they were out of soda…it was like 12:30 PM, how can you be out of soda??!!! So we they decided to order some coke 0 instead, but we were halfway through our meal and half of my party was still missing their drinks which was super annoying! We also tried reminding 3 different hosts/servers and they kept apologizing and saying that they're working on it, but alas, we were still waiting 30 minutes for drinks UGH.
They were not only slow on the drinks but on the food itself. They brought out the meat first, but the vegetables took an extra 15 minutes to bring out…I seriously don't know what goes on in that kitchen, it doesn't take that much time and effort to bring out a few basket of vegetables. The service is the only reason why I am giving this place a 3 stars. Although I do enjoy their food, I wish the service could have been more prompt.
So regarding their food itself, the broth is really wonderful. They actually put a lot of care into their foods. Out table got the half and half pot (half spicy, and half non spicy). I would recommend you to do the same because the spicy broth just gets a little bit too hot for me to continue eating the entire meal. The meat and vegetables are very fresh, so I have no complains about the quality. The price isn't that bad for the toppings that you pick either but they don't give you that big of a helping.
Overall, good place to eat with you friends and family. But I think I'd rather be eating at a hot pot buffet.
yes, yeas and YAAAAAAASSSS! A girlfriend of mine kept telling me to check this place out— the straw that broke the camel's back is this "better eating lifestyle" thing I'm trying out (insert side eye).
The way it works is you get a check off menu and its divided up into veggies, meats, noodles, etc and you check off whatever it is you want. The server brings along your choice of a mild or spicy broth (in our case I got the mild and added the spice myself and my friend go the spicy). Its placed on a burner in the middle of the table and you get a table full of the freshest, most yummy meats and veggies to throw into your soup. I LOVED IT!
Our servers were Brucey and Chris—- Brucey had to leave for his break and was polite enough to come by and let us know who would be assisting us and make sure we were ok. He was an absolute sweetheart. Chris was super funny and laid back. All the servers were helpful to all the customers. If one of them saw our water or broth needed refilling they just brought it over. I enjoyed watching how well they worked together:-)
The prices were ok. Be careful with those little check boxes, your bill can add up. We spent about 30.00 each but we took a ton of soup home. This is a must if you are in the area. There are a lot of Asian food places in the area so a lot of fun to check out.
My experience here was really pleasant. We arrived 5minutes before the closing time so waitstaffs seemed to be rushing us but they still allowed us to dine in. The food was really good. The meat was fresh and the soups were also very authentic. We were not sure how the portions were and since we couldnt order anymore, we ordered a bunch at once and the bill came out to be $105 for 2 and with the tip it was over $60 per person but I would def come back!
We had half of the food left so we brought the ingredients and the soups to go. They do provide you with to go box and cups.
If the service was better, I would give 5 stars but I think it can and should get better.
My friends assumed this was going to be the Chinese version of Melting Pot and boyyy were they wrong. I tried to tell them otherwise and they learned for themselves – this is much more intricate!
First off – just know that you're going to have to WORK for your food. Secondly – come dressed appropriately. If it's hot, be prepared to be even hotter. And understand that you're going to walk outta here smelling like you work in a kitchen. Third – BYOB! Get ready to drink and feast!
Love:
– Menu Items: Ribeye, garlic beef, sweet corn, enoki mushrooms, baby bok choy, and pork dumplings (order the cooked ones)!
– Sauce Bar: Soy sauce, sesame oil, hot chilli oil, garlic, cilantro, green onions, sweet garlic sauce.
Just Okay:
– Pork belly: just seemed to lack flavor/texture.
– Udon Noodles: these were the extra slippery ones. I like my normal Japanese udon better. Will try the egg noodles next time!
– Beef Meatballs: good but not great flavor wise. Should've tried the lamb ones!
Suggestions & Tips:
– Be prepared to dodge all of debris in the broth used for flavoring (this was a 1st for me). We scooped out some half way thru our meal.
– Wait until the broth boils to begin cooking.
– Feel free to put some additions into the broth for more flavoring (we added hot chilli oil, more garlic, and sesame oil into ours).
– Make a reservation if you're a party of 6 or more!
You can eat for cheap if you know what you want, or spend a little more to venture and try a variety of menu items. A dining experience recommended for all!
