HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
After learning of Livorno Restaurant on Yelp's Hot New Businesses list and reading the unanimously laudatory reviews here, I was seldom, if ever, more eager to schedule and host a dinner for our Meetup group at this restaurant. Boy…..did I have high expectations and boy….were they more than met when I dined there with our group on 1/10/15.
Nick, the owner and veteran restaurateur, was a gracious host from the outset. When I made the reservation, he was friendly and accommodating. He told me that he would try to make any dish our group desired. That is called "customer service".
The restaurant is a moderately and properly lit space on the west side of Atlantic Avenue in Lynbrook, on the block immediately south of Sunrise Highway(Route 27 for non-locals).Nick has his tables spaced in a humane and considerate manner with plenty of space between each table so you do not feel crowded. Our group of six conversed easily, at least until an overtired and under-disciplined wailing toddler pierced the ear drums of everyone in the joint near the conclusion of our meal.
I began with a strong and slightly sweet Expresso Martini, enhanced by the addition of a chocolate liqueur. It was excellent. Members who ordered wine by the glass commented upon the generous pour.
Livorno is committed to the quality and freshness of its food. The complimentary Caponata, placed on our table as we were seated, is freshly made each day. It was spectacular and, in itself, a reason to visit this restaurant.Nick also treated us to complimentary olives, cheese and cured meat. His Italian bread was homemade, fresh and delicious. You could tell that it was different and better than store-bought bread. It, along with the very fresh tomatoes, enhanced the Bruschetta considerably.
I ordered the Stuffed Artichoke as my appetizer. The stuffing was moist and delicious. Our nice waiter read a list of about 6-8 specials. Most of my fellow diners, like me, chose from the specials and you should too.The winner among the appetizers was a whole Portobello Mushroom with Spinach in a Balsamic Reduction. Wow!!! Nick graciously made half orders of pasta available and one diner enjoyed Rigatoni with Broccoli and Shrimp.
The entrees were very generously portioned. All but one diner took home a substantial doggie bag. I loved my Seafood Combination Platter Fra Diavlo. It was atop exceptionally fresh Homemade Pappardelle. It contained a very large hot pepper as opposed to the more typical sprinkling of crushed red pepper, a creative and inspired tweak on this dish.Members loved the Veal Chop Valdostana, Red Snapper Livonese, Veal Francese and Pork Osso Buco over Homemade Pappardelle. The Veal Chop looked luscious with prosciutto, melted Fontina cheese and chestnut sauce. The member who chose Veal Francese loved it. The veal was pounded perfectly thin and she said it was extremely tender. The Pappardelle was superb and you should order it if it is available. Two members also enjoyed Homemade Gnocchi in Red Sauce.Members loved desserts which included Italian Cheesecake, Tiramisu and Tartuffo. Finally, Nick provided a complimentary fruit tray and complimentary after dinner liqueurs, mine being Frangelico. Thus concluded an absolutely perfect Italian meal.
I have seldom, if ever, been more eager to return to a restaurant.
