They charged us $1 for each bowl of rice, where they do that at??
You mean to tell me, we spent $80 on food and you can't give us a free bowl of rice to go with our meal? Da fuq?? I disapprove of this worse than an Asian parent disapproves of a B on a report card!
I came here as a last resort for Father's Day dinner as my go to restaurant was packed and we were hungry and didn't want to wait. Went on my Yelp app and found Lucky 8. Decided to give it a shot because of the good reviews.
I remembered that I used to come here but stopped but didn't remember why. Well now I remember… The food was only ok, I personally prefer City Café and was more expensive than City Café. I did like that they had English descriptions on the menus for the ABC's like me as well as pictures of the foods.
Really good experience overall. The waiters are nice, the place is ok and looks clean. I recommend the sweet and sour chicken, for me that was specially good. If you are in the neighborhood, check it out.
I've eaten here twice so far and I can say the food does not disappoint. Service was friendly and attentive too. Plus it's easy on the wallet. The lunch special they have is three dishes and soup for 19.50. You can easily feed a family on 20 bucks. The fried calamari was meaty with just the right amount of saltiness and kid approved. A must try is the chicken with taro. The taro is similar to a potato in texture and it just soaks up all the seasoning and sauce from the chicken, adding to the flavorful dish. The only dish that I thought was just OK was the vermicelli with shrimp… the sa-day sauce made the dish just a little too heavy for my liking. Another plus about this restaurant is their dinner menu… while the waitstaff may be limited in their English, all the menu items have photos which makes picking a dish much easier. They also have ten course meal options for dinner events and the prices are also reasonable. Downstairs they have two rooms – one that holds 3 tables and one that holds 6 tables… with complementary karaoke! Definitely check this place out!
I've been here multiple times over the course of seven years and and say that this place is pretty consistent in terms of quality, especially in the 8th avenue area, where food is often cheap but too greasy or sloppily prepared. I have been here for the lunch special and sit-down dinners and everything has been great.
As for the lunch special, their dishes are all $6.50, and come with rice and soup. The lunch specials that goes all the way up until 4:30 PM, which is quite late and works perfectly with my schedule in which my lunch breaks are quite inconsistent. My personal favorites are the Peking Pork Chop (though sometimes it feels too sweet if you get it alone with rice), the sirloin steak with pickled turnips, and the beef with egg sauce. They also have all of the conventional Cantonese roast meats and these have been very good every time that I've gotten them as well.
For sitdown dinners, this place is also a great atmosphere and pretty friendly service. Dishes are clean, but the porkchops and the garlic chicken stand out among the crowd and there isn't the same problem with the porkchops being too sweet alone, if you have other side dishes. They also give you orange slices at the end of the meal partially as a dessert and partially to cleanse your palate.

Solid smaller Chinese restaurant on a mildly competitive street with lots of options but only a few worth trying. Food quality is consistent and service is decent for what it is. The Cantonese BBQ here is good for the area, but not competitive with the Chinatown in the city. Depending on the dish you order (off the dinner menu), a case could be made that this is closer to four stars than three off the quality of the food.
Lots of people were waiting to be seated at Lucky 8 when we arrived around 8:30 pm on a Saturday night but we were seated faster than I anticipated. Service is typical for Chinese restaurants and hot tea and sugary peanuts were waiting for us on the table.
We ordered the "pride of lucky 8" – definitely don't miss out on this dish. It was a delicious concoction of abalone (tasted like octopus or squid) with Chinese leeks (crisp with mild flavor) and other vegetables, sprinkled with dried fish. Also tasty were the minced pork with eggplant and the Sichuan roasted duck. Prices aren't cheap but portions are massive, so we had leftovers to bring home. The Brooklyn Chinatown has a very different feel than the one in Manhattan so I recommend exploring a bit either before or after dinner at Lucky 8!
Was trying to find china town in Brooklyn, read the reviews so we thought (let's give it a try) I wasn't impressed at all! The place was small, ok…that didn't bother me, I figured that, but after looking at the menu forever I finally ordered the things that sound familiar, roasted pig- this suppose to be there big hot item, I expected something with more flavor, I am Latina when we look a pig it's dripping in flavor, this lacked, basically tasted like some type of honey glaze. Someone on Yelp wrote to try the ribs, also wasn't impressed, I've had better at my local Chinese joint. The fried rice, also zero flavor, and we also got the garlic chicken, which I must say wasn't too bad. There are no dumplings, egg rolls, or any Americanized Chinese items on the menu. I guess I have to stick to joes Shanghai in Chinatown….
But I will say service was good, everyone is attentive to you, and the food comes out really fast! Maybe too damn fast.
it's not hard to find competitive food on 8th ave… but I keep going back to this place because I can find some really good dishes here for a decent price. one of my all time favorites is the vinegar rib… it can get kinda fatty sometimes, but if you have it fresh out of the kitchen and fried crisp, it's worth all the calories.
