Lucky Zhang is one of the best dumpling restaurants in the 8th avenue area.
There I've said it!
Their pork chive dumplings are this savory blend of sweet fatty pork and savory green chives. When you bite in, a small pool of fatty pork juices flows into your mouth.
It's like having a great dumpling with a tiny bit of soup inside. And it's heavenly.
And LZ uses real fatty pork with real fresh green chives inside. (Makes you wonder what the other restaurants put inside their dumplings, right?)
The dumpling skin is thick and chewy but not so thick that the skin is doughy. I've had multiple take-out dumpling lunches from them (12 dumplings for $3.5).
Delicious, filling and has me dreaming about their dumplings afterwards. I definitely get cravings for those delicious meat morsels!
I've also bought their bag of frozen dumplings and remade this sensation at home. The bag of 50 dumplings only costs $15. I know that is on the higher end for a bag of frozen dumplings but they are some of the best!
This place has a hidden little luxury that my friends and I have only been able to get here. For less than getting on the MTA, you can get a sizeable order of what they call "Ban Mian" AKA Peanut Butter Noodle. DO NOT bag it until you try it (photo to come soon). I'm not sure how man had not thought to combine noodles and peanut butter earlier, but Lucky Zhang has figured it out. Get that $2 ready and get some!!!
24/7 Fujianese restaurant, always there, always fast, especially when you're hungry. I been here for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late night dinner, a place I could always count on. My last visit I had the soup with 3 dishes family style option for under $20!
Affordable & delicious Fujianese food located in the heart of 8th Avenue!
It's recommended (but not necessary) to bring a Fujianese/Mandarin – speaking companion.
Hungry at odd hours? Lucky Zhang's Family is a 24/7 restaurant operation. No matter what time of the day that you are hungry, it's open for you to pay a visit. Don't expect much waiter service or fancy looking decor. Keep in mind, you are here for the traditional Fujianese food. For its affordable price, you get so much food and your tummy will be satisfied.
Favorite dishes in this restaurant include:
– Fried Vermicelli Dishes with meat of your choice – a comfort food for all, not too oily and very flavorful.
– Fujianese-style Wonton Soup – a lot smaller compared to the Cantonese wonton; comes with a vinegar-based soup; very different but worth a try.
– Fried Taro Cake – Love! Crushed taro puree (still thick!), dipped in flour and deep fried. Taro puree still hot and soft on the inside, crispy dough on the outside.
– Crab Soup with Chinese Cabbages – hot soup with added egg whites and real crab meat with corn flour to make it thicker. Add a bit of red vinegar – perfect soup for cold/rainy days.
The bill will come out to be less than $20.00. Your eyes will look again to make sure, but it's true.
Waitress has the WORST attitude, I don't think she knows how to smile. She threw toothpicks and the menu at our table but that won't stop me from coming back for $2 peanut butter noodles late at night. I love the fried intestines here and this place has cheap Asian eats although how healthy it is might be a good question… NO TIP is necessary!
Food comes out extremely fast. Peanut butter noodles came out in 2 minutes, other appetizers came out in 4, and my fried intestines came out in 10 minutes. If you're looking for some drunk food or cheap food late at night, this is a good option if you can handle 1 mean RBF.
i wasnt even hungry but a few friends kidnap me here late last night (actually, almost morning) after a long night of drinks. ended up binge-ing on:
* the freshest dumplings ive had in a long while
* the best fujian style oxtail noodle soup ive ever had so far
* the best chow mai fun ive had in a long long time
* snails – very tasty but hard to suck out while still buzzed
* "white rice" fish tht was odd, mostly batter, very little fish
suffice it to say, it was a gooood meal. perfect for late-night, after-drinking, stuffing-your-face.
relieved to find out they have a manhattan location too…
a value eat on 8th ave, don't know if there are any NON value eats on 8th ave, but there are some
this place is cheap and open 24/7, they have the well known 3 dishes to choose from a wide selection PLUS a soup for all under $20, yummy,
clam tofu soup – which is delicious, not too salty and does not taste like it has MSG at all, won't feel thirsty after you drink it
fried tofu which is delicious, nothing special but tastes good
sweet and sour fish – the fish was not in deep batter which you can actually taste the fish
veggies – veggies is veggies, but good thing is that it wasn't oily, most of asian places after u finish the veggies, you can see a layer of oil left on the dish
noodles with peanut sauce – $2 for this dish, OMG, never thought i will ever see a $2 dish at a restaurant, its made of "chow mein" (thick type noodle) and they give you a lot, not cheap on portions
had the snails – which is $6 for a small dish, it was enough, and for $6 im not complaining
this is a family style restaurant and make sure you have someone in the group that speaks fujian or mandarin, fujian preferred because they will most likely know what's good
remember cash is king and you don't have to leave tips
i would definitely come back here again
