They say things happen for a reason. Well when i was heading to a Doctor's appt and my GPS got me lost, i stumbled upon Lucky's, then my GPS made me make a u-turn and once again, pass Lucky's, it had to be fate, no?
Turns out i was only about 1/4 mi away from my the Dr, I was told my BP was a little low, nothing some salty food wont cure, right? i got out of my appointment at Lunchtime….The planets are aligning, .I'm guessing this was a sign from above.
I pull right up to Lucky's, before i exit my car, i need to check Yelp reviews (of course) and guess what? Good reviews! Especially by my main man Mick L. Now as i sit in the car, i ponder the question, what should i eat? I hate to walk into a place, while the person behind the counter is staring at you, waiting for you to make a decision, only to have you rush and say "I'll have…………..", no, not this time, i'm going in with a plan.
I'm still outside and i'm casing the joint, seems as though burgers, philly cheesteaks and ribs are the main bounty. I wasn't feeling a burger, so it was between the PCS and ribs.
I exit my vehicle and head in, cool place, had some vintage rock n roll playing, place is decorated cool with lots of diamond plating, almost like a cool garage. The girl behind the counter says "what can i get you?", i say "this is my 1st time here, what do you suggest?", she says "Are you hungry, or really hungry?", i said "i'm pretty damn hungry.", she says "RIBS!"………………SOLD!!!! i go and sit in the dining room, a bunch of flat screen TVs hung around. I sipped my soda and played w/ my phone, looked around, the place was cool and seemed clean.
About 10 min pass and she brings out my ribs, a full rack with seasoned fries and a side order of garlic bread. Oh yeah, this is going to be good. One bite, i was feeling happy, the sauce was good but not over-powering, the meat was fall off the bone tender, the fries were seasoned nicely, garlic bread was a delicious unexpected surprise.
The whole meal was really good, the girl from behind the counter came out and checked on me a few times, we briefly conversed, she was sweet.
I need to get back to Lucky's very soon and so do you!!!!
This is a great place to grab a quick bite. The atmosphere is definitely casual, but not as divey as many other fast burger joints. The service was STELLAR. The price was right. I ordered a house salad and burger and it was under $7. With that being said the house salad wasn't too shabby. The burger was delicious, but keep in mind it is on the smaller side, which I like, but you may want to opt for their double or triple if you like a lot of meat. My friend ordered fries – very good. I would come back here for a burger or to try something different.
After reading the reviews here, I was really excited to have possibly found a great barbecue place in the area. I have had some terrible barbecue experience in New Jersey, so I was excited to go after reading the reviews.
I was meeting a good friend here who arrived early. He called and asked where I was. I explained I was a few minutes out, and he wanted to know if we we eating at a "whole in the wall" restaurant. I said I didn't know as I have never been there before. I also said some of the best restaurants I have been to are wholes in the wall.
I arrived and parked infront on a Saturday night to find no one was there besides my fried and the service staff. We walked in, met my fried, and we were greeted by a friendly counter waitress. She explained you order at the counter and then go sit in the dining room where the food is brought to. She also explained that the burgers, wings and ribs (in that order) are what they are known for. We ordered all three (wings with hot sause), paid (tip is expected prior to service) and took a seat. Note: in scenarios like this I only tip 10 percent, and tip more after eating if service is exceptional due to the fact you order your own food at the counter and fill your own drinks.
We caught up for twenty minutes when all the food including the wings came out at once. I was expecting the wings as an appetizer; I was never given the option, and really feel like I shouldn't ask. The ribs were a little dry; there is also no extra barbecue sause on tables. I asked for extra sause and got a plastic to go cup with lid. The sause was okay, but I needed three more of the cups to have enough sause. I didn't bother to me walk back up to the counter and ask though. My friend loved his burger.
I then dove into the wings, and they were just average. I would never recommend them. We ordered them in hot flavor, and they had a tiny bit of heat to them that a toddler may feel was to hot.
Service was just delivery of the food and clean up, and other than the welcome when we entered, it was unfriendly. We came at 8pm, and we were harassed out 945 when they closed at 10.
This is a whole in the wall with a nicer interior. The have tvs at each table, all playing the same game though. All the TVs played the same game though; I didn't ask, but if they play just one gsme, then this is not a Sunday destination. The set up is like a railroad car, long and narrow, but not overly tight.
The menu is huge though, but in terms of barbque, they only have wings and ribs. Barbque should be removed from it's listing type.
While this isn't one of the terrible NJ barbque experiences, you'd have to twist my arm to go back. If anyone reads this and has a recommendation for great barbecue in northern NJ, then please send me a private message.
