Really good lobster rolls but $16 for 4-6 bites worth? I KNOW it's standard but its ridiculous. That said, the lobster really does melt in your mouth–and then explode. So good that it made up for the lackluster bun.
My trip to New York was just shy of a 72 hour experience. Trying to map out the spots to hit up, specifically for food, was the main priority. Odd to think a lobster roll was a must have, but so glad it was one of my last meals there.
Very small space with a few high tables as you enter. But, interior was decked out in eye catching decor and pieces plastered on every inch of the walls. Almost felt divey or what I'm used to, a small taco shop near the beach. Service from the start was wonderful. A gentleman gave recommendations with a smile and friendly personality. From food suggestions to bathroom tips.
Lobster roll $16: Lobster served chilled atop a buttered and toasted split top bun. Swipe of mapo and othr secret ingredients and boom, one mouthwatering lobster roll. It was chilled to the right temperature, where it did not feel cold and off balanced with the toasted bun. It all went together nicely. The bun- soft and buttery just may be the highlight.
Clam Chowder $9: plenty of clams and good thickness of the broth. Pricey? Maybe. I enjoyed it so much I ordered another to take back with me. While waiting in the airport, it made for a great desperate snack.
I was very pleased with the two gentleman working that Saturday evening around 9pm. One of the better customer service received while in New York.
I have another lustyfication!
And it's for seafood!
I'm talking about crustaceans and other sea deliciousness: clams, crabs and most definitely lobster.
And who said you can only enjoy a lobster roll In the summer months only?
I don't discriminate…. I go for it and eat it all even in the winter!
I've had Luke's Lobster in my Bookmark List for a bit…. And anxiously wanted to savor their delight.
Exterior door has that beach house 'storm door' look, done in natural wood – with the same beach effect carrying through in its interior. Be prepared my friends, Luke's Lobster is tiny. Very. Tiny. Luke's interior brings a beachy escape to The LES- especially in the dead of winter.
At most, it sits (if I have to guesstimate) about 7 people and that's with elbow room. Now factor in no elbow room, and you're looking at 10- tops with a feel of packed sardines!
We were greeted immediately and placed our orders with the young cashier. To begin, I went for the small Clam Chowder and Mr. Man had the Lobster Bisque. {Oh, and by the way, the young cashier bumped the size of my Chowder to a large 😉 at no extra cost- thank you}. Honestly, my Chowder was way tastier that's the Bisque. Although the Bisque had nice and succulent chunks of lobster, it just had a starchy taste. Let me be clear, it wasn't horrible or tasted gross, it's just that I wasn't too keen on the taste.
Midway through our Chowder and Bisque, Mr. Man placed an order for the Noah's Ark which consists of 2 of each in half portions sizes: crab, lobster and shrimp, 2 sodas (or water if you like) 2 each crab claws and 2 baggies of Cape Cod potato chips for the awesome total of $46! Pretty great for all that goodness!
Rolls were rolling in deep with seafood. No mayo on my rolls! I went for the butter. Thank you! The bread roll was toasted lightly and buttered. The seafood flesh was also buttered and it was so intense. Could the rolls stand to be a smidgen bigger even though they're cut in half? Absolutely, but given that you get the whole package of half portions with other goodies added on- I think it fares out ok.
In the end, I think we were fed well for the price. Could you stand to go to other lobster roll locations? Of course, but, if you want a good dose of seafood rolls in The LES and have not tried Luke's Lobster, I think it may be worth it to some for the first time.
I had a MAD craving for clam chowder this past Saturday, but was lucky enough to be hanging with a friend who was happy to join me on my quest for clam chowder.
We didn't want to have to go to a fancy seafood restaurant to make this happen, so we figured Luke's would be the perfect place to go. This location is much smaller in comparison to the few other locations in the city, but it serves its purpose. There is more standing room than sitting room, so either grab it to go or prepare to get super comfy with your neighbors.
A large clam chowder cost almost $10, which is crazy since a large really isn't all that big…but what the belly wants, the belly gets. Whether or not you take it to go, it will be served to you in one of those lidded paper cups. It also comes with a little packet of oyster crackers. Cute. It was delicious, as expected, but quite high in sodium.
Will probably be back the next time the belly calls for more clam chowder since it's a low-key spot and close to home for me.
Over the past few years I've had Lobster rolls from San Francisco to Boston, and my lobster roll at Luke's Lobster bested all of them.
Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere?
With a quaint little divey nautical vibe that you might expect, Luke's Lobster is accommodating whether you're dining in or eating out, and the service is quick and friendly. I hear the line can grow lengthy, but there was no one in line when I strolled in on a beautiful Saturday early afternoon. Star Granted.
Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost?
If there's a star that could be contested here it would have to be this one given the prices at Luke's Lobster and the size of the rolls. Now – Lobster Rolls are expensive, plain and simple, but they're expensive everywhere, and the $16.00 I paid at Luke's was more or less what I paid across Boston and actually cheaper than what I've paid on the West Coast ($20+). Having said that, those other rolls were in some cases twice the size of my lobster roll here at Luke's, and it was only after I sorted the logistics of getting fresh lobster to the East Village that I felt comfortable paying $16.00 for my roll. Let it be known; however, that a penny over $18.00 would be a bit excessive for what you get here. Star Granted.
Stars 3 and 4: How was the food?
Absolutely brilliant. The buttery and flavorful bun, the fresh lobster, the marvelous seasoning. This was the full package; and like I said earlier, it was probably the best lobster roll i've had anywhere. Dual Stars Granted.
Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could?
It's close given the price point, but yes. Star Granted.
I had thought about just giving them 5 Stars and leave it at that but I guess I should say a few words. Gah Damn. This place is bomb. Their soft buttery chewy bun is everything – it is what makes their rolls so damn good – of course adding the crab and lobster meat is the bonus.
We got there around Thursday afternoon so it wasn't too pack. We ordered the Noah's Ark (for 2) and it comes with a drink, chips, half a crab, lobster and shrimp roll and 2 stone crab claws. Fresh seafood does not need condiments, you consume it like it is. No need for ketchup, tobasco, cocktail sauce or butter! The sweetness of the crab and lobster just made me grin from ear to ear.
I highly recommend you stop by if you're ever in the area, They have many locations so don't pass up on it. I hate that I have to travel so far but it was worth everything.
I've been meaning to change the stars for my review here. Luke's Lobster went out of their way to contact my friend and myself to try to rectify this situation. Though it doesn't replace the items my friend had lost that day, some comfort food in the form of lobster rolls definitely helps.
Thank you Luke's Lobster for your great customer service.
We got the Noah's Ark which is perfect for two people and for people who wants to try everything on the menu because they're sample size basically (but quite bigger), but nonetheless they were packed with seafood. Overall the rolls didn't have any other flavor beside the taste itself. The bun itself had more flavors than the seafood. I love the bun, it was soft but crispy. The shrimp roll was our least favorite, it tasted exactly like a shrimp cocktail with the sauce. The crab itself was full of flavor in the crab roll, which I love because I like crabs. The lobster roll was definitely our favorite.
The Blueberry Marine Soda was so good, definitely recommend getting it! The Burberry lemonade was a bit weird, I didn't really like it as much.
