“I have been living in East Harlem for about 6 months now and Lupitas is my families absolute favorite take out when I'm too tired to cook.”
“My only complaint is delivery can take a bit long- but it's worth the wait if you want good Mexican!”

We stopped in after my sons basketball game. I've wanted Mexican food for the past 3 days. The setting fits the nabe- looks like it gets live but it was empty this time of day. I had the Shrimp tacos and Avocado Salad. Salad was decent, wish there were more dressing varieties– I had to settle for ranch. The tacos were really good; sautéed in a garlic butter sauce. IMO, its a once you've tried it, you don't have to return. Not necessarily b/c it's bad but simply b/c once is enough.
My waitress didn't speak that much English but she was super friendly.
Compare to the other places, The horchata here is not as smooth. But maybe that's the way it's suppose to be. It's thicker but still very flavorful and tastes very home made.
I got the breaded steak torta. The Sandwich is huge. The bread to filling ratio is perfect. The breaded steak is cooked perfectly.
Definitely coming back if I'm ever in the neighborhood
My husband is half-Mexican and continuously claims that "there is no good Mexican food in NYC." I read all the wonderful Yelp reviews and decided to give this place a try anyway.
When arriving at this restaurant, I didn't think it looked like much, located in a mostly residential part of East Harlem with bright green walls and a lot of delivery guys milling in and out of the restaurant. The waitress was very attentive and friendly, and came by multiple times to check on us.
We (unfortunately) just missed Happy Hour from 5 to 7pm when drinks are only $6-7, but still opted for the red sangria, which was very very strong. Guac, salsa, and chips were brought out and were very good. My only complaint is that we had to request plates to come out with the starter course. About 20 minutes later, the waitress brought out our entrees, the Enchiladas de Mole. These were definitely the best and spiciest I've ever had, with my husband ordering more sangria because "they were burning his mouth." I've never seen him find Mexican food in NYC spicy, so this is definitely a major compliment on his part. I also think I disproved his assertion on "no good Mexican food in NYC" wrong.
Overall: great food, casual atmosphere. Definitely worth the trip.
What a solid establishment that seems to be cooking home style mexican food. The clear stars were the Guacamole which was so fresh (you can tell it was whipped up to order in the kitchen), $8 Stellar Margaritas ($6 during HH) and also an amazing Goat's Milk? Flan Oh My !!! The Al Pastor Tacos didn't really blow me away but they were still very good. Next time gotta try the Pancita/Menudo Soup.
I like this place. I always order through Seamless so I cannot speak for the space etc. But whenever I have ordered, everything has been excellent. Guacamole is always fresh and they give you a lot of it, plenty of chips as well. I have tried many different things and everything has been good. The standouts are the burritos. The Chorizo Burrito is especially tasty, well balanced, spicy. Very nice. Prices are reasonable and deliver is relatively fast. This is my Mexican take out place when I am in the mood, which is pretty often. Solid 4 stars.
Wow! Finally found some REAL Mexican in New York City! Great food, service and atmosphere. This place rivals any place I have been to in California.
I WILL be coming back…
First visit, this place used to be pizza parlor. I've read some really good reviews about the place, looking over the menu, I was impressed with the selection and its cheaper than Cafe Ollin (San Cristobal Restaurant), which I think is better but I haven't tried their taco salad. I ordered the chicken taco salad to go. It looked amazing (see pic) but it was ok. There's small pieces of chicken, not much. They put beans and salsa and guacamole on top of this very yummy fried shell. But for some reason it wasn't very flavorful, they gave me italian salad dressing on the side, really? I asked for green sauce and the lady asked, do you want the 50¢ or $1.00 sauce? Really? I just bought a taco salad for $11.50 you can't give me a small green sauce on the side? I hate when businesses are so cheap with the condiments, maybe if I had the sauce I would come back for the taco salad.
Best taco salad is in the Bronx, Mexicocina! Trust me they are so generous with the condiments but you won't need it.
Buen provecho!
Ordered delivery from Seamless on a Monday afternoon and it came within 20 minutes.
I ordered the Chicken mole enchiladas. It came with rice (or beans or salad, if you prefer).
The mole sauce was terrific, a great flavor to it – I could have just eaten that with the enchilada tortillas all day. And it made the good rice even better.
The chicken was flavorful and tender, and perfect with the mole sauce. The cheese and avocado on top were just icing.
It was a good amount of great food for the price. I only ate half, but easily have eaten all of it, it was so good.
I've also had their tacos before, and those are also very good.
So, top notch. It's hard to decide between Lupitas and Cafe Ollin nearby – I'll just have to try both, side by side!
