If you're hankering for Korean BBQ, this is a good choice.
MaDang is a Korean BBQ joint on Staten Island. It's tiny and has limited parking, but there's plenty of seating once you get inside. It wasn't terribly busy on a Friday night, but BBQ tables aren't plentiful, so you may want to go in advance. Service was surprisingly slow for a place like this, but it wasn't outright awful.
The BBQ here – the highlight of the meal – was stellar. The method of cooking tends to leave a lot of juice laying around, which is kinda unpleasant, but the meat (bulgogi, in my case) was too good for me to care too much. There was definitely not enough dipping sauce. The mushrooms that came with the bulgogi added a lot – I've never had enoki mushrooms in the Korean BBQ context, and the taste was very welcome.
The seafood pancake and tofu soups here are equally good – note that the seafood pancake is VERY doughy, so it's nearly a meal in and of itself.
I'm spoiled here in Northern Virginia – we have a ton of really good Korean places that beat the pants off places like MaDang – but for the location, it's a solid choice.
MaDang has very good, reasonably priced Korean food on Staten Island. They don't have a lunch special menu (too bad), but they discount their dinner menu by about two dollars per item (which is nice) during the lunch hour.
I had a dolsot bibimbap with bulgogi and some friend mandoo, both of which I enjoyed very much.
Highly recommend MaDang for lunch on Staten Island. I will definitely be back.
Five star since it's rare to find great Asian restaurants on the island. They are super friendly here and I've never had to wait for a table. The banchan is good and there's a pretty extensive menu. I don't come for the bbq since it's a bit pricey. I usually get the bibimbap, kimchi jigae (spicy!), or Yukgaejang. The spicy wings are pretty good too. The cinnamon tea at the end is a great touch. Definitely on my rotation of Staten Island restaurants.
This place is great to have in Staten Island being the fact there isn't much actual Korean food there. I used to come here when I resided in the neighborhood so it was a win win for me. The inside atmosphere is nice and there's enough spacing between tables to maintain a comfortable level of privacy.
The service is average that is the one thing they can work on. I felt at times it was a bit difficult to get one of the waitresses attention but not that big of a deal. I came here after running the Brooklyn Half Marathon and the food filled me up. I ordered the pork rib bowl. It tasted great and the rice was crunchy which was a good combination.
The offer Korean tea when you sit down and was served to us immediately. The menu has lunch specials from 11:00-3:00 I believe it's a few dollars cheaper. There's a lower level for the Korean BBQ I believe but we didn't go into that area so I can't be for sure. The bathroom is a single use one and it was clean.
The parking lot can be a bit tricky because there are other businesses in the lot but we didn't have issues finding parking. Overall it's a good place for Korean food for sure and will return in the future.
This place is awesome!
I came on Sunday afternoon with my best friend to have lunch. ( I tried checking in but it wouldn't let me) When we enter the establishment, the waitress was very sweet and let us sit where ever we wanted.
She offers us tea or water. I love tea so I order the tea. It was good! I order the veggie bibimbap and my bestie order the pork bibimbap. Not even 5 minutes later, the waitress came out with a platter of fresh vegetables, miso soups and salads. The food was so fresh and yummy that I was ready for my main entrée. I only waited 10 minutes for our orders and it came in a hot stone pot! The meal was calling my name! I eat the whole entire meal including the bottom sticky part of the rice ( which is super rare for me to eat). My bestie enjoyed her meal as well and for dessert she had their complimentary " cold ginger tea". She said she comes here for that. Our meal all together was only $22 dollars and I was shocked with that. The whole dining experience was great and I will definitely come back again.
Tips & recommendations
1. Parking. Its in a small plaza. You shouldn't have any problems with parking.
2. Public transportation. The s/61 runs near this restaurant.
3. Customer Service. They won my lil vegan heart with that. The waitress was friendly and attentive. Towards the end of my meal, the place got super busy. But I didn't mind it because I was enjoying my food. But she did apologize for that.
4. They have another room where they cook in front of you but that's only during Dinner service. Please call the place before going. As I am not sure of the exact times.
5. Enjoy!
The fact that this is the only Korean restaurant on Staten Island, I was intrigued but also wary. This mom-and-pop restaurant is located in a small strip mall. As at most Korean restaurants, we started our meal off with an array of complimentary banchans which included a nice variety ranging from slightly spicy to sour bites, miso soup, and a small bowl of salad. We ordered:
SOY GARLIC WINGS ($11) — With so many great Korean fried chicken establishments now, these are inevitably one of my least favorites. The wings were super moist on the inside and perfectly crispy on the outside. However, the accompanying sauce was overwhelmingly tangy costing them a star.
GALBI ($32) — Honestly, I feel that marinated short ribs are the king of all Korean restaurant dishes. The galbi here was well marinated and had a good texture without much fat yet still juicy. For the price tag though, I felt it was a bit pricey especially for the small portions.
OCTOPUS DOLSOT BIBIMBAP ($13) — Perfect to share between two people. It's essentially rice with a variety of seasoned vegetables, ground beef, grilled octopus, and a runny egg served in a hot stone pot. The sizzling rice seemed so simple yet so well-executed with the sweet fermented chili paste. There was a great balance of flavor and texture that worked harmoniously. Thumbs up**
The ajumma was really sweet and provided us with hot ginger tea after our meal to warm our bodies from the frigid weather. Overall, a solid spot worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood. It's unrivaled to the Korean establishments in Queens but the bargain lunch specials are unbeatable.
Great service and decent food, came here with the in laws.food came out fast and both the price and presentation were good. The Galbi a little tough but overall a good experience and will return again.
I got takeout here for the first time today, and I will soon be a regular!
The staff is sooo friendly! Even on the telephone! I called first to see if there are lunch specials, and she was extremely patient and even attempted to help me decide on an item. She told me there are a lot of options, so I decided to go in to look at the menu. Yes. There are a lot of options! Lunch specials are just discounted prices on what they serve regularly.
I got the spicy pork belly with vegetables – Jeyuk-Deopbap – $11 for lunch. So flavorful, spicy, and delicious! If you're familiar with Korean food, there are always complimentary mini-like appetizers that come with the meal. I was so surprised that in my take out there are all the mini appetizers packed up in separate containers! WOW!!!
I will be ordering here again soon – probably every week. 🙂 🙂 Seriously in love already.
