This bakery rules – fresh filled cannolis, little biscotti, fresh baked bread of all kinds including pork / prosciutto bread. Not really much else to say about it, go here now while you're in the little italy area. I never liked cannolis but this converted me.
I thought I hated cannolis. I visited Boston a few years ago, and had cannolis from Mike's Pastry, after hearing that it's one of the best cannoli shops in Boston. To this day, it's the closest thing to diabetes in pastry form I've ever had, and I have a sweet tooth! I finished half of it before throwing it into the trash. I'd never been more sure that cannolis were not my thing. If I didn't enjoy cannolis from a place that was supposed to be the best at making them, I probably didn't like cannolis to begin with.
This past weekend, a friend had a birthday celebration, and HIS friend brought cannolis from a bakery in Astoria. Despite my misgivings, I had one and was blown away. This is what cannolis were supposed to taste like? Crunchy shells, more cheese than sugar in the filling, this cannoli was delightful! I was determined to give cannolis another shot. Clearly, my previous experience was not representative.
Madonia Brothers is the second cannoli I've had since my re-awakening (and it happened the next day). This one was even better. Fresh filled small cannolis, crispy, and just over a dollar a piece.
I might now go ahead and say that cannolis are my thing.
I tried this bakery right after I had a hard workout at the gym, LOL so it might be a little biased because Im usually starving right after the gym. As soon as I walked in I heard one of the women behind the counter asking what did I want. There were so many options to choose from it took me a few minutes to scan the bakery to figure out what I wanted. There were a few people already there and they seemed to know exactly what they wanted. Quite a few of them were purchasing different loaves of bread. It was cool to see how they slice the bread automatically with the slicer.
I opted for a small taste of the jalapeno and olive oil pieces of bread. I also ordered a selection of different cookies. The bread was okay I wasnt a huge fan. However, the cookies were surprisingly good, They werent too rich or too bland and of course my favorites were the ones with chocolate. I will check out this bakery again to try some other breads and more cookies of course.
B-R-E-A-D!
Madonia has a large variety of baked goods, but I specifically come here for the bread and the biscotti. Their bread is high quality and they have a large variety; you can't go wrong with tried and true Italian, but I also enjoy their cheese breads and prosciutto breads – lots of flavor with nothing else needed. They make their biscotti exactly how I like them – super crispy and flavorful, perfect for dunking.
Madonia isn't the end-all-be-all for Italian bakeries in the Bronx, but for some solid Italian bread this is definitely the place to go.
I've never had canoli before coming here, and I'm glad I came here first. They made delicious chocolate chip canoli, which is incredibly sweet, rich, and filling. This is also a pretty famous spot for canoli in general, so come for that.
Best. Cannoli. Ever.
We came after a small Italian feast, wanting to enjoy the treats on our first adventure through Arthur Avenue. I probably could have spent hours sitting on their floor eating everything, but alas I'm apparantly not allowed to do such crazy things – so I just bought a little of everything. I got a few cannoli to go, and the second I stepped outside I legit inhaled them and could have died. SO. GOOD.
I can haz more now?
The first thing I noticed when I walked in here was the smell of fresh bread and immediately, I knew I was in the right spot!
Although I did not buy bread that day, I did go for their cannoli and boy was it good! Once I placed my order ($1.25/small), they then filled my cannoli with the fresh cream and it tasted perfect. I like this because the shell of my cannoli still had a nice crunch while the cream was fresh and creamy and not too overly sweet.
As far as decor, it's decorated very simple and had a nice old Italian school vibe. The buttered cookies were a bit over priced but I guess we only live once.
The service here was quick. I only tried a cannoli and biscotti. I thought the cannoli was just okay. The filling tasted a little funny. The pastry part was very solid. The chocolate biscotti was alright. There was nothing great about it, but it was decent.
Will I go back? I would be interested in trying other items.
