  1. I *love* South Indian food the most with its more spicy offerings, dosai, coconut chutney and idly with sambar. Don't even get me started on the hot pepper rasam. I love mulligatawny, but it has about a tenth of the spice offered by rasam.

    At Madreas, the food is vegetarian, so no worries about meat anything making its way into your curries here. The dosai list is impressive. I had the Spring Dosa, which is a thin lentil crepe filled with potato, veggies, "gunpowder" (dried peppers), served up with sides of sambar, coconut chutneys. Simply scrumptious and I took more than half home, as the serving was huge.

    The staff is extremely accommodating and friendly. My mother ordered a saag dish that even though is not traditionally spicy, was too spicy for her (the South Indian preparation makes it impossible to be mild). The owner/manager came over and offered to remake it with more cream to cut down on the spice, but my mother can't eat heavy cream. She then brought out some sides of yogurt sauce, as well as a sweet side dish of chutney to help temper the spices, which obviously worked as she ended up eating the entire portion. Go Mom! Taking the maiden voyage down the super spice highway…

  2. I went to the bathroom 2 times after visiting this place.  The food was good (or eh ok) when I ate it, but the aftermath was ridiculously disgusting.  Enough said.

  3. If you're craving authentic South Indian food this is it. For those who generally go to South Indian Buffets (Palak Paneer, Dal, Tandoori Chicken, Aloo Gobi, Goat Curry, etc), this is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

    These South Indian dishes are not found in many restaurants, nor are the dishes mentioned above all found here. So do not write this place off without having an open mind. Many have told me this place is not good – this is because they are expecting one thing and getting something else, something unfamiliar to them.

    So what is it that you can find here at Madras Woodlands?
    * UNLIMITED DOSA'S!
    * PaniPuri
        – A round, hollow puri, fried crisp and filled with a mixture of water,
          tamarind, chili, chaat masala, potato, onion and chickpeas.
    * Sambhar and * Idli
        – Sambhar is a vegetable stew or chowder based on a broth
           made with tamarind and toor dal
        – Idli is a south Indian savory cake popular throughout India.
          Idli is generally served alongside Sambhar.
    … to name a few.  These are all things you generally do not find an an Indian Buffet.

    Madras Woodlands is Delicious and Perfect is you are looking to try something new or just love this type or South Indian food. If you do not know what to do, the staff is extremely friendly. They also have Chinese food there… don't ask… Just go for the South Indian food!

  4. I went there with a customer. I have no idea what I'm ordering when I go to Indian restaurants, but I can say that what I did have was very good. I think one of the items is called Bijji. My customer was good friends with the owner. We stayed with a vegetarian cuisine and I let my customer order for me. If you like authentic Indian food, this would be the place to go.

  5. Madras is an unexpected gem in New Hyde Park. The Indian style they serve, Udupi, is fresher and different from any other Indian food I've had. This Southern Indian style is all vegetarian and is prepared fresh each day, meaning very little oil is added (usually used for preservation). The result is food that tastes light, but is filling. Try one of their wonderful sampler platters if you're new to this kind of style! Yum!

  6. My boyfriend and I had a wonderful date here this past Saturday night and it was a divine experience.

    I had the onion paratha with "baigan bartha" which is curried eggplant. It was very yummy and it was the perfect amount of spice, it wasn't over powering at all. My boyfriend ordered a giant paper dosa which was so insanely thin and delicious. For dessert we had the "Madras Woodlands Special" which was halwa with a scoop of ice cream. It wasn't very sweet and very palatable for a after dinner treat.

    The owner was very kind and hospitable and made sure to come by our table to ask how everything was. However, our waitress wasn't very attentive, she seemed to pay more attention to tables with larger groups. There was a boy that worked in the kitchen and at the tables that did most of our waiting service and thankfully he was very prompt and attentive. Ultimately, I had a lovely dinner experience and the reasonable prices and delicious food will definitely keep me coming back for more

    Note: I had posted our food pics from here on Instagram and some of my friends were in awe at the paper dosa so they came the day after I went for Sunday dinner and also had a great experience. They called me raving about how delicious the paper dosa was and that they did not expect vegetarian cuisine to be so spectacular.
