Maison Kayser

“In the West Village today for dinner, so took home some Kayser treats.”

“I wish I had a bigger stomach to try all the other pastries here – looking at you, almond croissant!”

“For a lack of better comparison, Maison Kayser is a high end version of Le Pain Quotidien without its famous sweet spreads.”

  1. I like to give people a chance so I don't always Yelp about bad service. But when I receive service so atrociously rude, I think a business deserves to be shouted out. So don't come to this Maison Kayser location unless you embrace absolute disrespect.  I wanted to try this new location so I stopped by yesterday to get a baguette for breakfast. I was the only customer in the place, along with a friendly African American staffer and an Asian cashier. The young African American greeted me with a big hello, the other glanced at me and said nothing. Fine. The first got my baguette, bagged it, and placed it in front of the cashier. I got my money out to pay. The cashier still didn't acknowledge me. Then something so galling occurred next. A man strolled in, they both chimed a loud hello to him, with huge smiles and he asked for a green tea. They both said sure or great, and proceeded to get his green tea. The cashier rang up his green tea, even though my money and baguette were in front of her. Then the man questioned the price of his green tea, saying it couldn't be $3.56. So not only did the cashier ring up his order first, I couldn't pay until they convinced him the price was correct. The African American girl, realizing how rude the cashier was, actually apologized to me. It wasn't difficult to tell by now I was getting very annoyed. Cashier lady was too busy drooling over what I guess was one of their regulars to even bother. I finally had to interrupt the price conversation to inquire  whether she was going to take my money since I had been there first. I ended up just walking out and leaving the money on the counter. Not only the cashier not apologize, while the other lady did, she gave me a look as if she was insulted by my reaction.  If the other young lady hadn't been so gracious and apologized again, I would have told cashier lady to shove her bread into her you know where. Maison Kayser seriously needs to send shoppers to its locations. I, and apparently other Yelpers, have noticed poor service at various locations throughout Manhattan. Maison Kayser had better get back its game because this is Manhattan, and there is no shortage of bakeries or gourmet markets offering great bread. The chain lost a loyal customer yesterday. This location deserves zero stars. And to the Asian looking cashier, you seemed so desperate that If I weren't so irate, I would have bought you a subscription to EHarmony.

  2. Came in for a cookie and a chocolate croissant.  Croissant wasn't the best I have had.  It wasn't as flaky as I would have liked and didn't taste fresh.

The cookie was better but still not as good as some other places we have ordered from in the city.

If you are starving for a snack, come in, if not, there are better options.

  3. Trying to grab some coffee as it was freezing outside and were led to the table promptly. However the waiter/waitress left me unattended for such a long time that even people sitting next were being served. Same thing when asking for the check. Really think they should improve their service, apart from the quality of coffee, which was also lack of flavor.

Such a bad decision to come here.

  4. The pastries here are great. I got a pistachio eclair, and my friend got a chocolate croissant. The eclair was really rich and had a strong pistachio flavor – but not the artificial kind. My friend really liked her croissant, too. I wish I had a bigger stomach to try all the other pastries here – looking at you, almond croissant! It's also very authentically French – from the people who work here to all the pastries and drinks! There are several locations of Maison Kayser in Manhattan, but I've only tried this one. I hate chains (restaurants and bakeries especially), but this one is one that I approve of.

  5. Stopped by for coffee on a Saturday afternoon with a friend
did not order any food, just wanted to sit down and have a drink and chat
ordered a fruity tea and it was awesome
service was great, hot water got refilled very quickly
The environment is also very nice, not crowded, you get your personal space.

Will definitely check out the food options and desserts next time!

  6. I had already eaten but decided to run some errands and have an early dinner at Maison Keyser. It is a nice sized space-the entrance is for take out for all kinds of French goodies and the rear is a full service restaurant. The staff was most accommodating-i was seated quickly but it took a while to place my order since they were so busy. I ordered the quiche lorraine-individual not a slice, a cappuccino and a chocholate croissant. The cappuccino and croissant came first-the quiche followed-(not my preference) The quiche arrived with a small salad with cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and radishes. It is also the type of place that does not appear to rush you out. I would recommend and return however it is pricey.

  7. I've yet to get to have a lovely and leisurely sit down visit here.  I look forward to that moment when it arrives.  For now, I can say how delighted to have my annual Epiphany "galette des rois" wild goose chase shortened tenfold by the arrival of this spot in my neighborhood.  Better yet, they care the mini versions that serve 1-2 people in addition to the pricey full size variety.  Better still, it's delicious!!  Delicious enough to make you wish they served them year-round, with the flaky crust and the tasty almond paste filling.

Since my Epiphany mission took place in the morning on my way to work, I snagged a pain au chocolat for breakfast on the go as well.  Solid decision.  The kind of flaky/moist combo that makes it scrumptious even when not served heated.

I will surely be back to sample their other offerings.

  8. This was our first visit to this Maison Kayser location, but when we're in the neighborhood again we'll definitely be back. The front of the store has their baked good on one side and a to-go beverage station on the other; there is sit-down dining in the rear with enough space that folks waiting to be seated aren't blocking the door. They had the usual selection of French-style breads, pastries and deserts and although the prices aren't cheap, they are competitive for the quality of their baked goods, particularly in NYC! The bread and pastries we brought home were excellent! We were particularly appreciative of the up-beat, customer-oriented attitude of the two counter staff members who assisted us.
