  1. Beloved Ruay Thai may be gone, but Maison Thai is a wonderful replacement! They really revamped the look of this place. The interior is now a lot more modern looking, with black leather seating and a dimly lit ambience.

They also feature a menu with some unique items, like their German spätzle pad Thai and even truffle fries.

For dinner here yesterday I ordered their Panang curry, which was delicious. I LOVE how they make it with avocado! My only complaints are how little rice they give you; I had a whole bunch of curry leftover with no rice to eat it with. And also the spice factor was definitely lacking in my dish. However, my friend's green curry was blazing spicy even though she requested milder. Looks like I'll have to get that next time!

Service was incredibly friendly. Prices are really low – only $10.50 for the curry dishes INCLUDING meat (even seafood)! I hear their lunch specials are a really great deal too, $8.50 I think. Great neighborhood addition…will probably be back here again real soon.

  2. I've never had Thai food in a relatively intimate, cozy setting while listening to Joe – 'I wanna know', followed by Lauren Hill, followed by Tyrese – 'sweet lady'.  I guess Maison had their 90s jams playlist on a Wednesday evening.

This took the spot of Ruay, which was a neighborhood favorite of mine…still a bit shocked as to why they closed, but now open is Maison and they're definitely a different restaurant.  Their ambiance is more intimate, and they re-did the interior.  They don't have their liquor license yet, but you could probably bring your own alcohol if you want to (we didn't).

Their menu is pretty unique for a Thai place – yes, you have your pad thai, pad kee mao, and your normal curry dishes, but they have some cool chef creations and other dishes, as well.  For appetizer, I got the Tom Yum soup and that was delicious – a nice spice, flavorful broth, and steamed vegetables.  The only issue is that it's hard to eat out the white ladel-like spoon they give you (or I'm just an idiot).

For dinner, I got the Pad Himaphan with tofu and it was pretty good.  I got it spicy, and it was definitely spicy – but not where you can't taste the meal.  The dish was huge (and I took more than half back home with me to eat for lunch the next day).  The sauce was dark, with a plethora of veggies and tofu.

Overall, a solid place – it's definitely a good date spot.

  3. I hadn't been here since they recently re-opened under a different name, but I'm still a fan!

Dropping by for a late lunch, my friend and I ordered the chicken pad thai and shrimp spicy noodles, respectively. While my friend's chicken pad thai was just average, my shrimp spicy noodles were tasty. Furthermore, each order was enough for two meals.

A word of warning, though: my friend's chicken was partly inedible, and I highly recommend avoiding it.

  4. It is interesting to see 75 photos and only reviews. I will do lunch here today.

So I did. This small place turned out to be pretty good. You will be amazed by the tiny but well organized dinning area. The lunch menu is simple and short. $8.50 get you a main dish plus salad and dumpling. The salad and fried came first and is well made. Thumbs up for the carefulness into the plating, and the sweetness on salad is not overwhelming. The main dish for my lunch is fried rice with shrimp, carrot, pea, and egg. The flavor is in there except the over saltiness. The chief definitely did a good job by serving our table of seven quickly and together. I will come back for more.

  5. After my semi-detour from vegan food in Connecticut, I was glad to be in New York where I would have more options.

For Manhattan, the prices were very reasonable.  I ordered the Masamang curry (coconut and peanut -a sweet aromatic curry) with tempeh plus the Tom Yum soup with seitan.

The Tom Yum soup was spicy but flavorful whereas the Masamang curry was very sweet and aromatic.  In both cases, they gave plenty of protein.  The curry was thick (the way it should be) and not watered down.

The service was really good too. My only complaint is that there wasn't enough rice so I had to order extra rice, but still it was amazingly delicious.

If I'm back in the upper Manhattan area, I'd definitely be back.
