I played it safe and ordered a small bowl of wonton soup. No complaints. My friend ordered the coconut vegetable soup…several complaints. First they forgot to give her the noodles she asked for. Then they gave her the wrong noodles. Then the bowl was much spicier than it usually is. Then we had to ask for refills for our water. Let's just say service here is not the most attentive I've ever had. I liked my soup but I wished I had checked yelp prior to dining cause then I would have tried the mango chicken which looks amazing. Perhaps if my friend is willing to try again I will. Otherwise I probably won't bother.
We had two different experiences- dining in was an excellent experience. The food was great, portions were much larger than expected and the service was fast and friendly. Ordering however was a little different. The food was not as good and the portions were roughly half what they were dining in (still large though)
This is a small place with few tables and it is not good for a very large group. There were seven of us and we took up the biggest table they had plus the table next to it.
We definitely will be going back, the food really is GOOD! If it were not for the slightly lower quality of the delivered food I would give them the 5th star.
Like the place, I lived in the old chinese section and in Arab street and other parts of S'pore and worked a few years there in the 80's when the place was becoming an international bustling city state. So I had million of opportunities to try malay Bumiputra and Nonya and chinese, food in south east Asia. For the price you can't go wrong, love their sambal, Jimmy the owner knows me and always get it for me. Love their gado gado salad! Nasi lemak ,roti canai, Fried tofu, boiled egg sometimes lightly breaded and fried, potato, bean sprouts, cucumber, blanched veggies like green beans, sometimes with tempeh. Gado gado is really more an Indonesian dish that Malaysia has roughly adopted. love their char kway teauh
This is my favorite Asian restaurant. The employees are attentative, the prices are great and the food is awesome. The cellophane noodle dish is my favorite, along with their infamous roti canai (yum!)
I recommend coming here for lunch. You will be very pleased with the lunch special prices and fast service.
Malaysia Grill continues to be my favorite spot for food in my neighborhood. The flavors are always awesome, and the service is pretty good. Also, in a latest incident, my husband hadn't realized that I had paid for delivery online and went to pay our delivery guy again — and the guy came back and gave us the money back when he realized we had paid twice. I thought that was really nice.
I love their okra dishes, soups, and seafood dishes. I've never been disappointed!
I'm not really sure what Malaysian food is as I assume it's a combo of many different styles, cultures, and cuisines. I ain't no Asian persuasion, but we had no problem enjoying our meal here over the weekend after trying it out the first time. We dug right in and ordered up some delicacies of the land.
Malaysia Grill is one of those no-nonsense little Asian spots that pump out some pretty tasty food. Just a small spot with the all too familiar cookie cutter Asian restaurant look, but clean and cozy. As soon as we sat down I ordered a Singha beer and looked over the large menu of food choices. Seemed like a heavily Chinese food influenced menu with a mix of Indian, Thai, and Pan-Island influence. Had to go with a few of the standouts that I had read about here.
Roti Canai – terrifically satisfying as a starter. That lightly grilled, soft and fluffy pancake bread thingie dipped into the sauce is like crack!
Malaysian Assorted Satay (Chicken & Beef) – it was ok. Kind of a fun if forgettable appetizer. I had to give it a shot. The beef satays were quite large though.
Mango Chicken – comes served in a hollowed out mango shell. Terrific presentation and delicious. Full of mango slices, onions, peppers, and white meat chicken.
Chicken Nenas (Pineapple Chicken) – comes served in a hollowed out pineapple shell. Again, fanciful presentation and delicious. Full of pineapple chunks, onions, peppers, and white meat chicken.
We both had the Coconut Rice with our main plates and it was really really good.
You can tell this is a solid little locals spot as it filled up quickly. The prices are reasonable and actually on the cheap side. The food is tasty and prepared hot and fresh. The place is clean including the bathroom. Service is ok if a bit hurried and indifferent. Lots of cheap lunch specials too. Many choices on the menu, including vegetable plates for those vegans out there.
Yeah, it's the kind of place that we would drop back in again if in the area. We're easy to please. Tasty and cheap can't go wrong!
Malaysia Grill isn't really a Malaysian restaurant, more like a Chinese restaurant disguising itself as a Malaysian restaurant. Plenty of seating, prices are relatively reasonable but more expensive than the around the corner Chinese take out place. The service was fast and my seafood clay pot was pretty awesome even though it was more vegetables than seafood.
Wasn't quite what to expect with "Malaysian" on the menu, but I was craving a new place to eat in Manhattan Valley, so I decided to give it a whirl. What I got was a melting pot of various Asian cuisines, from Chinese to Thai to Indonesian to, indeed, Malaysian.
Situated just east of Broadway, this small and unassuming restaurant is tucked neatly away just below street level. Seating is certainly tight and limited.
After a wee bit too much day drinking (…damn me and my Saturday afternoon boozy brunch…), I decided to go the "light and familiar" route. I got chicken with mixed vegetables, brown rice, and a homemade ginger iced tea. That iced tea is potent and will certainly kills what ails you! The chicken dish was tasty enough, though a little bit mushroom heavy. (Beware, fellow fungus haters!) the brown rice was…brown rice. Haaaa. 'Twas a trifle dry, unfortunately.
Adam got the Beef Rendang, a Malaysian / Indonesian beef dish Cooke in coconut milk and spices. It was definitely spicy according to him; I regret not stealing a bite, regardless. He enjoyed it thoroughly.
We definitely want to come back for more. It's off of the beaten path and relatively inexpensive. You can't go wrong!
