Ay Caramba. Guac is loaded with overpowering onions, no bueno for after dinner make-out sessions. Fish tacos came out in a hard shell and were loaded with overpowering bell peppers–save some money and go to taco bell where you'll get the same quality of tacos. The decent carne asada plate and friendly service save this from being a one star review. Definitely a close cousin of Senor Frogs and in no way related to LA taqueria joint.
What's up with Mexican food in New York?
This place definitely was not up to my standards of what I'm used to back home.
The meat was weird, it was like some sort of tomatoey manwich deal. Ummm?
The prices were crazy high. For Mexican food???
The margarita prices were crazy too, I didn't have one the day I went but they have the many sizes and prices plastered all over the place.
Also, this was like a lunch/brunch time and when we walked in, my friend and I were the only table in the place. The music was blasting so loud from behind the bar like it was 12am on a Saturday – quite ridiculous. I asked them to turn it down finally, I couldn't hear myself think. They were nice about it and did. Just doesn't make sense why they'd do that in the first place.
The staff as super nice, but I'd avoid coming back.
I had a great experience with my friends at Mamasita. This place makes the meanest margarita I have ever had! I ordered the frozen margarita, which packed a deliciously tart punch and came in an adorable cactus glass. Be warned, though, that you will get tipsy from this drink! We actually got to speak with the owner, who told us that the bartender uses high-quality tequila to make their drinks.
The ambiance is perfect for a fun night with friends, from the upbeat Latin music to the subdued lighting. This would make a great venue for ladies' night out or partying with coworkers at the end of the workweek.
Yes! Food is yummy here. The menu is humungo and there are so many margs to choose from. I tried the chimichanga and it was rico.
It's small inside, but they take reservations and you can come with a group and not feel squished.
The service here is phenomenal. They really take care of you. The kind owner always says thank you for your business And offers a free dessert. It makes the experience memorable.
Coming back asap…
I was excited to try this place because of all the amazing reviews, but I was not very impressed.
The interior is very homey and crowded. It's ny, so it's not a big deal that the inside was cramped.. but all the tables were too close together that everyone kept bumping into each other even when we were seated.
We went around dinner time, and were immediately seated. However, we sat there for 15-20 minutes twiddling our thumbs to get glasses of water and to order. And we're fairly certain that the waitress stopped to serve us because she saw that I was on yelp looking for other restaurants in the area, since we were thinking about just leaving due to the slow service.
I got one of their margaritas, which was pretty solid.
Not normally a huge fan of Mexican food.. but my friends (who are huge fans) agreed that the food was just ok/good.
Unlimited chips though!
We were looking for a lunch while staying in Hell's Kitchen, we used Yelp to find Mamasita, it had good reviews and we were nearby. It was 90 out so we were glad to not walk far.
We were sat immediately and started off with their guacamole which was very good. I got one of their many margarita flavors, raspberry which was very well made with real raspberries in it, yum!
I was pretty hungry and craving flavorful chicken, I don't know why…so I got the enchiladas en salsa verde. The chicken was tender and very flavorful, it hit the spot.
We were lucky enough to get a compliment taste of their tres leches dessert and it was a delicious treat at the end of the meal.
The owner was actively asking people how everything was and genuinely seemed to care how people felt about his business and food. He was very passionate and told us about how his daughters work with him and some of his kitchen staff has been working with him for over 20 years, now that's impressive.
Sometimes, I go to places and I just don't understand how it's so highly rated. Perhaps its just a one-off bad experience or my palette just isn't the same as everyone's. However, I went as a group of 4 and we all left very unsatisfied and unhappy. I just went through some of the reviews for this place and hellooooo sketchy!!!! So many reviews from folks who have basically 1 review each and how does this place constantly get reviewed every day? Reading the "reviews not recommended" section was a hoot, too.
First off, apparently this place is only hot because of their margaritas. The waitress wasted no time going on and on about their many flavors of margaritas. I don't drink, so no thank you from me!
We ordered guac to start with. Their guac was something like $11 or $12 and was this tiny bowl of guacamole that was starting to oxidize and turn dark. It looked like it had been made at least an hour ago and was just sitting around or something. It was too mushy and did not taste fresh at all…. and too much onion or something. Not worth it.
They also messed up our friends orders and gave her 3 enchiladas instead of two. When she pointed it out, they took it to the back and I guess removed an enchilada? Wouldn't most people just say oh well, keep the extra?
All of us got similar dishes and got the enchiladas. These are literally the worst enchiladas I have ever had. One was filled with chili (yes, I chose chili, but where have you seen chili-filled enchiladas?). The other was filled with shredded beef that basically tasted like the chili. Rice was meh and so was the refried beans. They also charge an extra $5 or something like that grilled steak if you want it.
What really grossed us all out was when the manager or owner came out carrying our plates of food and he had THE LONGEST FINGERNAILS. They were literally longer than mine. I can't imagine it's hygienic to be carrying peoples plates of food when your fingernails are longer than mine have ever been and probably have tons of bacteria hiding underneath them. Sorry, but this made us all lose our appetite.
They gave us a free tres leches cake for dessert, but at that point we were just ready to get out of there.
Overpriced, unauthentic Mexican food with meh service…. and maybe some sanitary issues. Edible food, but unsatisfying and way, way too expensive.
As a huge Mexican food fan I have to say this place is amazing!
We started off with nachos supreme with beef. Hands down the best nachos I've had. They were amazing. Lots of beef, cheese, guacamole and sour cream. Melts in your mouth.
Then we had shrimp quesadillas. So good! They were so juicy and all the ingredients were fresh and tasted delicious.
Unfortunately, we were not that hungry and didn't order anything else but I am sure if we will be in this area again we are definitely coming back for more.
The drinks are worth mentioning also. I am Russian and pretty heavy. What I'm trying to say is that I can handle alcohol very well. At least I thought I could. I had two 16 oz. margaritas and I was tipsy as hell! The buzz lasted for at least 3 hours. They tasted soooo good and were sooo strong. I should have had one more!
