  1. Great menu selection in Astoria and the food is pretty good. It still doesn't hold a candle to some of the Elmhurst Thai restaurants but overall pretty decent for the neighborhood.

The space is rather small with a few seats on the inside and one table outside. You order at the register and they bring out your food. There is the normal menu plus specials in picture format. The Duck Noodle Soup is one of those specials with flavorful broth that isn't too oily at all. The noodles are cooked really well and nicely textured. The Pa Kra Pow does have the option of minced chicken which is the most authentic way to get this dish. Minced chicken allows it to have more surface area to absorb the flavors and mix well with the veggies and basil sauce. The condiments available are a fresh red chili sauce and marinated fresh green chilis in vinegar.

The feel of the space does seem to call to their food truck roots with the wall decor and quick serve feel. Overall a good addition to the neighborhood.

  2. I love Thai and am so happy there is a delicious, new location right by my apartment! Every morning, I would see the Mamu Thai food truck driving by me as I walk to the train station.  I always mean to google it and find out their locations, but end up forgetting.  One day, I noticed they opened a brick and mortar location! I could not be more excited, especially since the location was so convenient to me.

There are quite a few Thai places in my area, but this is by far — the best!

You order at the counter and you can sit anywhere you like.  There is only one table outside with a bench like table next to it as well.  Inside, there are only 2 tables and some bar seating along the wall and windows.  The 2 tables inside were taken, so we sat by the window after we ordered.

Everything came out at almost the same time.  I was back and forth between my salad and noodles.  The Som Tum Salad  was the best I have had and reminded me a lot of the one that my brother in law buys from back home in Lynn, Ma.  I asked them to make it extra spicy and you can see the slices of chili in it.  The salad was flavorful and the ingredients were fresh.

Pad Kee Mow is my absolute favorite!  I noticed not a lot of places have it, so when I try to substitute and get the Pad See Ew and ask them to make it spicy — it never works out.  I had it with beef, cooked perfectly.  Not too spicy, but still had a little kick.  I love how they chop up the peppers into tiny bits because I hate it when it's large chunks.

Tried my cousin's Spring Rolls.  You get 4 in an order, they are pretty good sizes.  Usually, I hate veggie spring rolls but I love how theirs has glass noodles in it and the cabbage isn't too overwhelming.  Her shrimp pad thai was also delicious.  We've had others in the area before, and they are not good at all.

If you want hot sauce, they also have little packets of Sriracha :).

They also deliver through Grub Hub and Seamless!  And the employees/owners are awesome.  Super friendly and helpful!  Prices are great for the portions that you get.  I love that they serve the food in takeout containers, because when you eat in and can't finish your meal.. you can pop on a lid and take it to go!

  3. Review for take out only.
Generous portions and good packaging since food is kept warm even after a 30 min travel time.
We ordered the pad Thai and pad siew noodles.  Both very good but I have to agree the pad siew was the better ones I've tasted.  The noodles are not clumped up together meaning they didn't overcook it.
Prices are very decent – about $2-3 less than New York.
I'll remember to come back for more take out when in the area again.

  4. Was a bit disappointed. Had the curry noodles. Flavor was great, noodles were poorly cooked and chicken was dry. Also had fried wontons, not amazing. Thai iced coffee was good. Maybe the particular dishes i ordered are not the best.

  5. Mamu Thai, I've never seen their food truck before but it seems they've been successful enough to open their own restaurant.  It now occupies a space that was once a cafe and I think it's all for the better.  Mamu Thai is on a street with little foot traffic but it is still close to Studio Square and the Movie Theater which is a block or two away.

Mamu Thai is a pretty small space with two tables in the center of the dining room and bar seating along the outer perimeter.  There's nothing fancy about this place but clearly caters more towards the take out crowd.  The prices are fair and the portion sizes are ok but the food was incredibly good.  The green curry was incredibly flavorful and they certainly didn't hold back on the heat.  The only downside of my dish was the noodles, they were clumped together and would have probably benefited from a quick wash, the noodles also were softer than I would have preferred.  Regardless the meal was still good and I'll be back to try more of their items.

  6. My office is not too far from here so occasionally my co-workers and I will order off of seamless from here. So far my co-workers and I have had some combinations of the pad thai lunch specials and the thai fried rices (chicken, pork, etc). We've all enjoyed our food so far so its worth ordering from!

  7. Let me start by saying that Thai is not my favorite cuisine. I have nothing against Thai but if I am given a choice, I probably wouldn't pick it. That might have changed.

I went in after watching the restaurant being built and getting some recommendations from people I trust, one being my wife, to try it. The owners are very friendly and the decor is cool.

I ordered the Tom Kha soup and Shrimp Pad Thai. Both were AWESOME! The Tom Kha was smooth, lemony, and delicious! The pad Thai was flavorful and fantastic.

We bought lunch for our employees and everyone loved it. We will be back again soon!

  8. A hidden gem in the middle of nowhere, Mamu Thai surely did not disappoint. I was not too excited to have dinner in the area but my best friend works for the Mercedes Benz dealership and I did not feel like eating in the city. I was concerned but the area looks deserted and we'd have to walk several blocks to get to Steinway where there are more restaurants. I trusted the reviews of Yelpers and decided to give Mamu Thai a shot. I was glad and it is one of my favorites.

We had Fried Calamari, Papaya Salad, and Tom Yum soup to start. Honestly, I can do without the calamari and papaya salad. The breading on the calamari was falling apart. It was forgettable, like most fried calamaris, I guess. I was not expecting much. The papaya salad was a bit too fishy for me but Mamu Thai took their spices seriously because although I asked for medium spicy, there was a nice kick to it. The condiments put a smile on my face! Pickled jalapenos and red chili sauce!

Now on to the entrees…I went for my regular dish – Pad Kee Mao. EXCELLENT. Tasty and delicious. Didn't need to add sauce because it was already flavorful. My best friend had the green curry, as recommended by the waitress. It was delicious. It tasted a bit different at first but after a few seconds, I was like WOW. I wish we weren't too full so we could have tried their desserts. Definitely next time!

Mamu Thai, keep up the good work! I look forward to trying your other dishes.
