Here is a good place for a quick meal at good price when heading to the theater for shows.
We had the-
The Mile High Special hero- $11 large and $.7.75 small- good hero and a good mix of meat. Rate 4/5
Pasta- Penne Bolognese- $8.50; sauce is watery and taste is weak. Pasta is over cooked. Rate 2/5.
Summary
Food- 3/5
Price- 4/5; good value for price
Service- 2/5; serve your self style; order food and go find a table. Both my order was not correctly done. We asked for no cheese and we got cheese on both**.
Decor- 3/5; renovation has improved this place by a lot.
Restroom- 3/5; downstairs
**My order took much long than normal because they got both the orders wrong because the staff can't stop talking and arguing with each other.
This place has been here since 1960 and is known for their hero sandwiches. We tried the chicken parmigiana and the eggplant parmigiana sandwiches. Their sandwiches are fairly large and can be ordered as a large size (full sandwich, $8 to $10 range) or a small half-sandwich ($6 to $8 range). With the small difference in price, just go for the large. The sandwiches also come with a side of free kettle cooked potato chips.
Though the sandwiches are big, we found them to be pretty average in taste. They were both a bit dry and in fact, I have had better parm sandwiches in generic neighborhood pizza places at lower prices. Not bad, but nothing special.
My boss has been pumping this place up for a while as one of his favorite lunch spots, so we decided to order an assortment of heroes for his birthday luncheon. The general consensus was that the sandwiches were good but not anything to write home about, and this place is apparently a Hell's Kitchen icon. The biggest complaint was the lack of sauce on the parm sandwiches – it made them taste a little dry and flavorless. When the restaurant called me later on that day to confirm my tip amount, I decided to communicate that bit of feedback to the lady on the other end. Her response was (in a curt tone) "well you should've ordered extra sauce." No. I have had many an eggplant parm sandwich with sufficient amounts of sauce that I do not feel I should need to ask and be charged for more. All in all, it's fine and it worked out well for our luncheon. I will say, their Italian bread is excellent as well as their homemade kettle cooked chips.
Time to take a star off….at least until things go back to the awesome they were.
Last time I ordered through a delivery site, they offered the full menu. This time, maybe 2/3 or the options were available (perhaps they updated to eliminate 86'd options….)
Finally tried their pasta. They gave me a type other than the one I selected (perhaps it was 86'd), but I never received a call to inform me, and ask what other type I'd like. Pasta cook was fine….but the vodka sauce was just fine. Nothing to rave about.
Asked for seeded italian….received non-seeded italian (insert possible 86'd theme here…along with theme of never getting called to be informed…..)…and the bread I received was stale on the outside (not the awesome balanced type I'm used to getting here).
At least the chips were as expected….
A simply call to inform of the switches woulda gone a long way.
Will take some time off and order again….we shall see!
Not sure why it only has three stars but this place should be a 4/5 star place. I came here for lunch with a few of my co workers and this place was packed so I knew it was a good sign. The food was awesome! I ordered the chicken cutlet Italian style which comes with the chicken with cheese melted on top, with prosciutto and peppers. One of the better sandwiches I've had and I would certainly go back again to try some of their other items like the veal or eggplant parmigiana.
I've been going further and further or to explore for lunch and last week I've stumbled upon this sandwich place.
This place is a nice upscale seeming eatery – but when you buy your sandwich you'll be very surprised it is mostly under 10 dollars! Some of the food is precooked – like the chicken cutlets – but everything else is sliced per order. I had the special Italian sandwich – Chicken Cutlet with melted mozzarella cheese, with a generous helping of roasted red peppers topped with freshly thin sliced prosciutto with balsamic and oil. WOW that' a great sandwich plus it comes iwth a generous handful of freshly cooked potato chips.
They were damn delicious!
It's now one of the spots I go for a quick Italian sandwich!
Waste on time, web site has closing a 7:00 PM. I went there and it was on lock down at 6:15 PM
I was happy I walked in here for lunch. It was efficient ordering and getting my food. The guy who made my sandwich made a tasty one and the woman who took my money was friendly, efficient and cute. The bread here is great and very authentic. I had the mile high hero which is basically an Italian combo. I would give it a B grade. I am thinking the chicken and eggplant Parmesan heros might have been even better. They looked great and the reviews seem very positive. I am not sure I will be back as I was just passing through …but I would be happy to eat here again. This place seems to have been here for years, and I can see why. If I was a local I would be a regular.
