Came here yesterday and was disappointed thoroughly. Took a look at the menu and was confronted with entree prices that resembled those of Manhattan for good Italian food. Fine I said, I'm sure it's because the food is authentic and prepared with care and attention to detail. But to be on the safe side, I just ordered two apps before going all in. We got the caprese and seafood salad. Two things that are pretty hard the mess up.
The caprese that they brought was a joke. Most of the the tomato slices were not fully ripened and it came with three thick pieces of mozzarella. There was also a piece of Foxy lettuce on the plate as decoration. Really nice touch guys, reminds me of Tuscany.
The seafood salad was no better. It was bland and came with a single quarter wedge of lemon. It was actually the most bland seafood salad I've ever had.
Lastly, the service. In the time it took our waiter to check on the next table three times, he checked on us zero times.
All in all, stay away from this place. It's a joke. A bad one.
This is such a cute little restaurant on a cute little block in Edgewater! I popped in here after getting my nails done next door at Beyong Organic. I was starving so I ordered a vegetable lentil soup. It was soooo delicious and creamy. The deli is charming as well, with lights decorating it and a giant jar of Nutella! I can't wait to go back to this neighborhood and eat dinner here. It would be so adorbs for date night! Byob!
If you are looking for authentic home-style Italian dishes, look no further! Mangia has been a mainstay in Edgewater for quite some time and for the few years that I lived there it was absolutely one of my favorite go-tos. I have never (neither has my husband or the family members that I have taken there) had a bad meal there. All the food is made with thoughtfulness and care and it completely shines through. My go-to dish when I am there is the chicken Milanese. It comes with a house salad, and bread is always served with our drinks. Mangia is byob, which I personally like and they have a store front next to/connected to the restaurant where you can order take-out. Staff is always friendly and atmosphere is very charming. Will absolutely be back here again the next time I'm in Edgewater!
I originally said I wouldn't give you a second chance, but this is what happens when you loose to rock-paper-scissors… So here goes round 2 (three years later). Mediocre at BEST! The insalata caprese was terrible. The "fresh" mozzarella was stale and dry (please explain how mozzarella cheese can be DRY AND STALE!?). First time in history, I turned away cheese. A sad day indeed. Chicken Francese was tasty but the Chicken Parm was.. meh. Broccoli rabe was edible, thank God, we're starving at this point. Why not 1 star? The fact that I can bring my own wine to entertain myself and ease the pain of the tasteless meal as well as the quaint and cozy atmosphere wins a star… but not an accolade more. No more mangia, at least not here.
The dinner entrees looked great as we sat there but my group of friends were doing a late dinner so we just ate panninis and soups.
They enjoyed the panninis but felt that the broccoli rabe was too strong for their taste but I loved it–
Their antipasti items are also very good- i really enjoyed the stuffed artichokes- I just added a bit of lemon to it.
I also really enjoyed their lentil soup (however I did have to put a bit of lemon, salt, and pepper).
Very cute ambiance and friendly staff. They are indeed a bit slow. I think if there were waiters assigned to specific tables it would work a lot better but I'm pretty sure each table had all four waiters. It's such a tiny place so I'm not sure why their service wouldn't be a bit more easier to manage…
Side note: I also was a bit annoyed and uncomfortable in the restaurant since most restaurant patrons were staring (yes, blatantly) at our table since we were wearing headscarves, but this did not effect my restaurant's rating in any way. I just hope that other patrons read this and make "different looking people" feel a bit more comfortable (especially since we were all BORN here anyway!). However, the staff was nothing but smiles.
Making yelp a portal for diversity and social messages =)
Conclusion: Make a visit to Mangia and try entrees for dinner– that looked good and the restaurant became PACKED friday by 6:30. People were waiting to get in as we left.
This BYOB Italian restaurant has a charming and quaint interior. But only a few of the tables were adorned with checkerboard tablecloths. The food was solid but tended to be a little sweet, specifically the eggplant parm and eggplant rollatini. Maybe the brine used to soften the eggplant contained too much sugar. I dunno.
The broccoli rabe was well prepared. And their rice had a lot of flavor to it. I believe it was cooked in broth and not just h20.
Mangia is a solid local Italian restaurant in SE Bergen. It's rustic and lacks refinement. But I am okay with that.
This is a little Italian restaurant. It's BYOB which is excellent of course & the prices are reasonable. There is a lunch and dinner menu. The menu is somewhat small and there are about six specials a day. My favorite is the caprese salad. I've had it with both pork and chicken. The rice balls are also amazing. Some of the pastas I ordered are either hit or miss. I still enjoy this spot it's a cute local spot. Half of it is a deli carry out restaurant.
I guess your usual trattoria in the US: Italian food on the very filling and greasy side.
The place looks fine, a bit exaggerated maybe but fun. Staff is really nice and extroverted like you expect from people of Italian descent.
There will be no subtlety in your plates, but if you are craving pastas, not flavor, I guess you can go there.
