Tried Mangia for lunch yesterday after hearing about it so much. It's really just a by-the-pound deli-type restaurant with "fancy"-ish healthy-ish food.
I'd say the food is 4 stars, but the price brings it down to 3.
I had a sampling of many of the offerings that day, from kale salad to rare tuna salad. The tuna wasn't very fresh, so I probably wouldn't be getting that again. My favorites were probably the mushrooms, green beans, and the fresh mozzarella balls (yum!).
My little bowl of randomness came out to just under $10 – however, I find that I'm okay with paying more if the food is quite good and I get to eat different things as I get bored with food easily. However, it is more like a "snack" than a "lunch" as I was hungry a few hours later and started snacking on all kinds of bad things.
Mangia is one of those things you try once, but have to think really hard to decide if you'd go back again.
no.. just no!
This was my first visit but was glad someone recommended it.
1. Clean, large space with room to sit.
2. Good coffee and very reasonable for the location.
3. Manager and staff very friendly and on point with customer service.
4. Great selection of breakfast sandwiches, grilled panini's and baguettes.
5. Got a free coffee for my first check in (I already had gotten mine but I will return!)
Mangia is my go to morning spot. I come for the perfect breakfast bite. I like that they have smaller options. You can get a regular sized bagel, cream cheese and lox and then there's a mini version. I also enjoy the breakfast burrito for $4.95. It has tons of eggs with veggies wrapped in a soft, grilled bread. I was really into the eggs over easy and then I figured out the roasted tomatoes i thought I was eating are actually prosciutto. And I'm pescatarian so that is a no go. The carrot, ginger muffin is only $2.50 and does the trick in the morning. Quiche is still on my breakfast to do list. The girl at the register could probably smile more but the guy making the coffee makes up for it with his smiles.
The other side of the counter has a huge array of treats. I liked the traditional coconut macaroon. I also got a 4th of July sprinkled chai flavored French Macaroon for only $2.50 a piece. There are still so many treats to pick from.
They have a huge fridge section where I get some Pellegrino.
The salad bar here is expensive but absolutely beautiful selection of food to pick from. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw octopus as an option. I got the smallest container to not over stuff my lunch. Fresh grain salad and green salads, fruit, lox and so much more. I managed to be under $10. However, I could easily have gone to town on the salad bar.
There's alwayts so much room here to sit, high ceilings and a huge array of food to pick from.
They have delicious options for lunch, but it gets pretty pricey. Large options of meats, fishes, vegetables and salads at the buffet bar. Weighed by the pound, not even sure how much it costs for a pound actually.
The food is fresh and there is a great variety. Cashiers are pretty fast and there is usually some seating in the general area during lunch hours.
If you check in on Yelp, you get a free, small iced coffee.
My favorite weekday lunch spot in the midtown west area! There are not many options for take-out lunch in the area (around 57th st and 6th ave), and Mangia is one of the best among them in terms of both quality and price. I love the salad bar – a variety of options and full of fresh ingredients. Sandwich, grilled dish, juice – all the other sections also offer good quality/price options. I usually spend ~$10 from salad bar (or sometimes as low as $5).
I've also ordered catering to my apartment for a Saturday potluck lunch (ordered 24 hours prior to the delivery). Though it was a bit pricey – ~$40 for pasta salad and ~$60 for a sandwich platter – they were on time, the food pleased many people at the potluck lunch. Seamless delivery is another option too for a weekday dinner or weekend brunch.
Stopped in here on a cold day for a hot chocolate and a coffee. The hot chocolate was decadent, but not too heavy with a lovely helping of whipped cream on top. My other half had the coffee and said it was very good.
Staff were super friendly and efficient. The decor is welcoming and the place was very clean. I wasn't hungry, but the sandwiches and cakes looked inviting. Would stop in here again.
I have no idea what I was thinking ordering a burger from an Italian restaurant. It was my first time at Mangia, and I was craving a burger. I saw that they had a veal burger on their menu, so I asked the chef for a veal burger. To my dismay, they were out of veal burgers, but the nice man offered me a beef burger instead. I just wanted to satisfy my burger craving so I took the alternative. Note to self: don't order burgers from Italian restaurants. It tasted like frozen meat, slightly overcooked, and flavorless. EPIC FAIL. On my part.
Why the three stars then? Their other menu items look a bit more promising.
