  1. Excellent food and super nice servers. A few of us sipped some margaritas at the bar while waiting (quite a while) for the rest of our party to show up and we never felt rushed or in the way. As soon our friends arrived, we were escorted to a table and settled our bar tab from there. The guacamole was great, we could see one of the servers preparing it fresh at the station near the kitchen. My pozole was on point, and all of the other dishes looked good as well. This is not a super upscale place, or super extraordinary in anyway, really, but it will definitely satiate all of your tortilla‐protein‐cheese cravings and the location and service make it a comfortable place to hang out.

  2. Small local business that has recently become a hipster house. Upon entering, I was seated next to a hispanic family that was enjoying food and drinks. It is relatively small, comprised of a bar and one long row of tables behind it. It has a nice mexican atmosphere, with tiles on the tables and paintings on the walls. The service is a bit slow, as I waited for one of the servers to come in for her shift to give me some chips and salsa. Excellent starters, as you can fill up quickly on the big basket of tortilla chips and delicious salsa. I ordered the Nachos Santa Maria, chicken tostadas, and a Chi Chi. Their drinks are pretty, yet strong as each is blended with ice and topped with whipped cream, umbrellas, or cherries. The food is slightly overpriced, especially in this neighborhood. The nachos were delicious, but I have had better, and the tostadas were dry and got cold after awhile. A big group of hipsters came in and sat next to me as I waited for my free shot of tequila with my check in. If you have more people you will get better service at this place. I would have to debate on whether or not I would come here again.

  3. I am lucky enough to live around the corner from this place. They have a great weekend brunch menu. The outdoor seating in the back is a must on hot days. The open doors near the front of the bar are also nice for a cool breeze during the summer. My favorite things to order are the chorizo burritos $8 and the supreme chorizo tacos $4.50ea which include sour cream and guacamole. You can never go wrong with one of their margaritas as well. They have an extensive drink menu if margaritas aren't your thing. On our last trip here we tried the "Chi Chi" which pleasantly reminded us of piña coladas.

Service can be slow at times and inconsistent but nonetheless a worthwhile experience.

  4. I've written about this place before and i had such a great time then – which motivated me to return to sunset to eat here again.

My friends still live in the area and they come there all the time, but based on this last time we went, we may not return. It was three of us. I was the first to arrive of the group. The female server (seemed like a manager or something also) seemed so coldhearted. When i ordered a drink, she didnt even get it and just kept walking around until the other server (hila…i love you) was available and i had to tell her to get it for me. the first female server was such a bitch and was so rude i almost told my friends to not come and ill meet them somewhere else.

my friends arrived and we had a great time. Hilda saved the day with her great hospitality and warmth. the other lady needs to be somewhere else. I would only come on the days that Hilda is there…which forces me to call beforehand if i do.

  5. I've been at Maria's several times and this place has never disappointed me (at least so far!). I was still craving tacos after those minuscule ones I got in Manhattan the other day (I wrote a review about it) and Maria's definitely filled that spot. I got the Al Pastor ones here as well and they were big and delicious (and cheaper too). I forgot to take a picture, but I will do that the next time I'm there. I also got elote (corn) which was really tasty as well. So if you're in the area and crave good Mexican food in a nice little restaurant, Maria's is a good choice 🙂

  6. The food here was ok. My tacos weren't bad, but I've had better both in Sunset Park and in Manhattan. I did have a bite of my friend's burrito, and liked it more. Drinks were decent. Good service.

  7. This is my FAVORITE Mexican restaurant!

Food: Always SUPER fresh. I love the chicken burrito, but the tacos are excellent as well. You can pick your level of spiciness for the guacamole, and I strongly suggest the hot level if you like some kick to your guac. The Esquites on the cob is delicious, with a perfect balance of spice and melted cojita.

Drinks: Cheap happy hour, and a very cheap bottomless brunch on the weekends.

Atmosphere: BACKYARD BRUNCH! GO GO GO! Little door leads out to the back and it is vibrantly decorated with all sorts of flags and pictures and memorabilia. Big, bright umbrellas protect you from the sun when you are eating on multicolored tiled tables.

This place is adorable, and a hidden gem that is worth the trip to Sunset Park.

  8. Came here for lunch and wasn't too impressed with this place.  Ive been hearing about it for years so I decided it was finally time to pay this place a visit. The staff was sorta friendly but very non chalant at the same time. They didn't seem too much in a rush to provide us with service, in fact more than once we had to actually request attention after quiet some time of not being asked if we needed anything and the place was empty. Aside from that the food was okay. I tried the 1/4 chicken with the rice and beans and found that to be rather bland. I also tried the chicken enchiladas with rice and beans. Again nothing spectacular. Someone close to me used to rave about this place a couple of years back but as I have seen and have read this place has definitely declined. I certainly will not be returning here.
