Service is slow and inattentive, even though it was dead when we went in.
Prices are fair and seafood is fresh, however they broil every kind of fish in the same marinade so everything ends up tasting the same. Yech. The tartar sauce is totally bland. The sandwiches do not come with any sides, just a tiny dixie cup of coleslaw. I expected fries or something additional for $9 with my sandwich.
Fresh seafood, and very reasonable prices.
The place is a little dated, but when you want fresh fish (to cook or cooked – yes they sell their fish much like a market), this is the place to go.
No frills, just simple good food.
I love their New England Clam Chowder.
Keep in mind, the place is dated, and has an older cliental that typically eat here. i get takeout from here once in a while, as it is a block away from my work.
I have been here twice for lunch. Both times a cup of soup and a sandwich. The first time was Manhattan clam chowder with the basa oreganata and today it was the spicy crab bisque and a crab cake sandwich. The soups are both a 5. Extremely hardly and big chunks of sea food. This is definitely not diner soup.
Both sandwiches were very tasty. My crab cake was particularly delicious but on the small side. I should also note that the cole slaw is very good as is their tartar sauce. Service was friendly and sufficiently attentive.
I know of people who come here for dinner but I'm not sure I'd be one of them. The prices seem to be a lot higher at night and it isn't exactly the prettiest of places. The bathroom is downstairs and I pretty much had to duck all the way down the steps as well as in the bathroom.
It is a small place and the kitchen looks small as well so I can see when it's busy things could be slow in coming out although I have not had this problem at lunch time noting that both times there was towards the end of the traditional lunch hour and the crowds I hear they have may have already thinned out. (note to self:keep sentences shorter).
I am still having pleasant thoughts about the soups.
Marino's is the model of consistency. For ten years, I've walk in expecting fresh seafood and painfully slow service and received a heaping helping of each. Even before I sat down, I was able to plot out the entire course of events as they would unfold:
Minute 1: Sit down and dust off your own table before the server arrives.
Minute 5: Server asks if we want water.
Minute 12: Server returns with water, asks if we're ready to order.
Minute 20: Out comes the bread.
Minute 50: Oh good, appetizers. Finally.
Minute 85: Here comes the main courses.
Minute 95: Finally out after lunch, with only an hour and a half of my life wasted for a fried haddock sandwich.
