Cheese pizza and grandma slices are reallyyyy good. I love Mario's because there's a lot of space and it's got a homey atmosphere so it's a nice place to go eat pizza with the fam. Definitely prefer over Gino's.
Good pizza spot in the Great Neck area.
Decently convenient with the parking lot across the street if it isn't a very busy time of day.
Good service, will bring out slices to you if you sit down which is always a plus.
Very large slices too.
Another new neighborhood find…for me that is (it's been here for awhile). The service is fast and friendly and the pizza is quite good. I wasn't too fond of the caesar salad, but not everyone can make a great dressing. They have so many varieties of pizza (things I've never heard or seen either) and they even have GLUTEN FREE pizza. That means RoRo can come with me! Plus, added bonus, it's like 2 blocks from my house.
Kind of hard to decide what to give this place for a review…
First, they have a nice website that allowed me to easily place and pay for my order online. The prices were pretty good and the delivery was fast and the driver was pleasant enough.
The food was a mixed bag… The alla vodka sauce was delicious but the chicken was dried out and way over cooked. The angel hair was also very overcooked and fell apart when I tried to get it on the fork. But then, the veggie salad was great! Lots of fresh veggies, excellent olives and plenty of creamy Italian dressing.
I'm thinking they just had a bad night with the chicken and it's very easy to overcook angel hair, so I will certainly try it again
… Just got a call from the restaurant offering to bring me a new dish of pasta. Very cool of them to offer. It's good to see some restaurants still care what their customers think! .
I have had Mario's pizza at many of their locations. I used to love the pizza from their huntington station store, however, the pizza at this location does not wow me in any way.
First of all, I hate the fact that pizzerias (including marios), are more like "reheatzerias" since they keep the pizza sitting on the counter, under glass just drying out in the open air. This is not good for pizza, in fact this is not good for any food. The best way to enjoy pizza is piping hot, right out of the oven fresh.
That being said, their plain slice is fine, doesn't have much flavor, the crust has very little taste, in essence, it is an easily forgettable slice. It is okay in a pinch, and for great neck it is okay, but compared to the rest of the NY pizza eating world, it doesn't cut the muster.
Mario's came through a few days ago when I decided to call on the fly and order a large tray of eggplant rollatini and a pie (1/2 reg 1/2 Hawaiian)
They were more than accommodating ! My very large tray and pie were done in about an hour and I ran quick to pick it up.. This rollatini was SO GOOD! Mario's, you fed about 20 savage nurses that were starving and the freshness our your ingredients really hit the spot! The cheese and ricotta with the eggplant were so good we actually scarfed the tray down in like a half hour (between the lot of us and yes I went back for seconds)… I highly recommend ordering from here, I have ordered other entrees here as well and I really think the food is good here… Never sat in and dined but I've ordered delivery a lot and they're always making decent timing which prompts me to order again..
I'm from Chicago and have eaten a lot of pizza. Mario's pizza is fantastic. There is a quality component in Mario's pizza that's hard to find in Chicago. Don't get me wrong, I think great pizza tastes great regardless of where you live, but the average pizza joint is better in NY, with the exception of deep dish, which NY will never get right (on principle alone). Please stop telling visitors that it's the water. We don't believe you.
Anyway, moving forward, Mario's selection is excellent and the price is right. If you're ordering a pizza (if you're from Chicago) or a pie (if you're from NY), you must try his thin crust pie. It's amazing. It is a cracker like thin crust that's crispy. Also, get the Caesar salad. My wife still talks about it, so check it out. I'm impressed by the volume of items on the menu. There are many made to order, traditional Italian meals. You can also buy a half-bottle of wine to enjoy with your pizza, which is a huge plus. We enjoyed a couple of Chiantis.
The Mario's is around the corner form the train station, so check it out on your home, if you work in Manhattan.
DISCLOSURE: The owner of Mario's in Great Neck is my cousin by marriage, so I'm somewhat bias. I think they deserve the 5 star rating regardless. Greg, the owner, is a great guy.
The best a la vodka pasta of all of the pizzarias. Pasta a la Mario has chicken and spinach. One take out dish can serve 3 to 4 people.
