“The dumplings that came with my bento were great and I'll probably get an order of those plus something new next time I come since the spicy pork was too heavy.”

“We get take-out once every 10 days and are so glad to have this place on the Upper East Side.”

“A bit pricy but great taste and very quick for deliveries.”

  1. I got this today when hanging out with my friend. The place is small and clean. Bento was great with large portion. Next time I will try the Tofu Soup.

  2. Yes, finally solid Korean on the UES! It took long enough!  We ordered the bimbimbap with beef and spicy pork. Both were very tasty with fresh ingredients. I did not eat at the actual restaurant (only got take out) but the place seemed fine with a basic decor and seating for less than 20. I will be back, Maroo. I will be back 🙂

  3. Solid Korean offerings. Spicy pork rice bowl is delicious.

I'm just happy to have any Korean offerings on the UES. It has been a dead zone for any decent Asian offerings other than sushi for so long.

  4. This place seemed really average in terms of both quality and taste to me. The food was good but nothing spectacular for the price. However, it does seem like a rare find for the area.  When i went, they were close to closing so there weren't any other customers, but it still took them a while to prepare our food. They also dont give as many of the korean side appetizers that most places give.

All in all, I would only go if i were craving korean food in the area.

  5. I came in here because I like Korean food and it looked like a good place for dinner. I looked for the restaurant inspection rating and could not find it anywhere in sight! Then I noticed it- it was hidden in the bottom corner of the window, just a foot or two off the level of the floor. Very sneaky, Maroo! I ordered the Tofu Bento Box. It came with tofu with vegetables, rice, a salad, edamame, and two dumplings. Just to be safe, since I'm a vegetarian, I asked if the dumplings had meat in them. They did. The owners were very apologetic and re-made them for me. Upon cutting them open I was still not convinced they were vegetarian.
I was full afterwards but dissatisfied with my meal. Basically, the ingredients used were pretty cheap but it cost me $12 after tax! I've never had a tofu entree that expensive, even at a nice sit-down restaurant. There were also only like 5 smallish pieces of tofu smothered in mostly bean sprouts and cabbage drowning in the sauce. The taste was pretty good though. Then the salad was very tiny, so that's cheap to make and the rice is obviously a cheap ingredient too. So why so expensive?? I know bento boxes are supposed to be a little bit of everything, and maybe I just ordered wrong, but I can't justify spending that much money again on such cheap to buy ingredients.

  6. Finally had a chance to check out this relatively new Korean – Japanese resto that opened up in the space where Teriyaki Boy used to be.

We decided to stay home last night and in our laziness of couch surfing ordered Maroo off Seamless.

Food arrived hot within the 30 minute time frame so that was a plus.

We both went with the Chicken Rice Bowl with steamed vegetables and teriyaki sauce. Taste was ok and there was a ton of rice with some veggies mixed in and chicken strips on top with the sauce over it. It was an extra $1 for brown rice which brought it up to $11 total for each. Honestly, I could have done with less rice and more veggies, but I thought the protein part was a passable amount. Flavor was decent if a bit on the bland side.

The one negative I would say here is that it seems a bit overpriced for what it is. Looking through the reviews that is a recurring opinion here from many who have dined or ordered from this place. If they would just be a bit more realistic and lower their prices a little it would be more in-line for the neighborhood they reside in.

Overall, the food we sampled was ok, but the value is debatable for what we ordered.

  7. Very quick delivery– I feel like I barely waited at all. I ordered bimbimbap on a Monday lunch (didn't seem like any lunch special really stood out to me, so I just ordered this classic dish). I realized I was craving some heartier Korean food as it arrived though…but sadly, Maroo doesn't offer soondoboo or dolsot.

The portion was pretty big, with a generous portion of vegetables and meat. Miso soup actually very on-point! I was a bit disheartened that I had to order a side of kimchi, as the dish didn't come with small dishes. I suppose that's what I get when I order from one of the only 2 Korean restaurants on the Upper East Side, though. Next time definitely should make the trek to K-town instead.

  8. Disclaimer: I'm Korean so I have a different perspective.

So there's really no good Korean place in this part of Manhattan. I suppose something Korean is better than nothing. I usually order delivery from here and the best thing about this place is that the delivery guy is so fast.

Anyway onto the food. It's average Korean food at a high price. The spicy pork bowl is good and so is the bi bim bap (rice mixed with veggies and meat) I remember that kim chee wasn't free last time I ordered which is a Korean no no. But who charges extra for egg for bi bim bap? Last time I checked the egg is almost as essential as the rice in bi bim bap.

I did try the soon tofu soup which was surprisingly good but I wasn't sure if it's because my expectations were low. For the tofu soup I would go to BCD instead.
