We came here when there was almost no one in the place, so that could be why the service was great, but the fact that it was so good made us very happy. The staff is polite and not pushy.
Prices are pretty low – lunch bento boxes for $8.50 and sashimi lunches for $9 – I'll take it! I had the chicken teriyaki bento box, which came with salad, soup, a California roll, two small dumplings, and rice. The soup and salad were delicious and the chicken was very tender. The dumplings were a little greasy but that was to be expected, as they were fried. The roll was a little…warm? But not bad.
He had a spicy tuna roll and chose tuna/salmon for his sashimi. He said the fish tasted very fresh, but we both had the same issue that makes this a 3.5 instead of a 4 -the consistency of the rice was a little too sticky, as if it stayed in the steamer for too long. Good rice is crucial at a sushi place!
I've been here before and the food was somewhat better the first time, so maybe today was a fluke. Based on the service (and the surprisingly good playlist going in the background) I would still go back.
As a yelper below said, "Three stars is not an insult."
I really enjoy Matsu. The prices are just a little bit cheaper than other sushi spots, and flavor wise I find it just a bit tastier too.
Unfortunately, the service and sushi taste are inconsistent. Sometimes I end up waiting 20-25 minutes for my rolls, and other times 5-10. The number of patrons in the restaurant was about the same, too. I usually get a Philadelphia roll, but occasionally it tastes alot saltier than other times. The fried icecream is delicious, though.
Overall it's a good neighborhood place if you're not picky. I'd gladly return.
I usually go to gowasabi, however figured id try something different… the free wine was enticing and surprisingly delicious. I ordered shrimp shumai and spicy tuna roll (with brown rice)… figured I would test out the basics- the shumai was delicious however the spicy tuna was nothing to brag about. The service however was impressive and when I ordered something for my friend to go, it was very fast. Overall 4/5 stars, however im open to trying this place again to try a specialty roll.
Just finished hibachi dinners from here a short while ago w the fiancé… Steak and chicken… Everyone's favorite mmmm he claims his steak hibachi was really good however, He ate it in like ten minutes so I'll just be taking his word for its goodness …. I had the chicken hibachi and although very tasty I could have had larger pieces of chicken.. These were tiny cubes that were over cooked and hard sadly … I've definitely had better from this place… Get the chicken fried rice mmmm.. Maybe it was just a bad night for them… I'll try it again tho I'm sure
Place is intimate and clean… Probably wouldn't come here with a party larger than6-8..
This place is pretty solid. And it's the only place I have found in Astoria that makes their spicy scallop roll without frying their scallop.
The chef was very proud of this. He said he doesn't get the cheap scallop, but ones from Hokkaido that he can serve raw and still be on point.
The rolls are pretty standard and the fish are all good. But I wouldn't say this is 'out-there-WOW'. It's a pretty standard Chinese owned sushi joint with decent service. The lunch specials are good value.
I would come back just for the Spicy Scallop Handroll!
I came here for lunch and wasn't really happy. I had the three rolls for $11 which came with soup. The price was a good deal but out of the three rolls only one was good the other two were just okay.
I order takeout here through seamless quite frequently. I also ate here once in person with friends. Exceptional service both in person and taking out. They always get the order right and makes sure the customer is happy. Love their sushi as well, super fresh! Their hibachis aren't bad either.
Good food.. nothing spectacular that you need to trek from Brooklyn to but if this is in your area you should definitely try it!
