Food "to go", fast and delicious. There's a sit down restaurant as well. Serves the same food to go. My favorite order here is the fried chicken leg to go. If one's not enough, you can buy a second/side order for a few bucks more. And you can add a soy sauce colored hard boiled egg as part of your meal. The chicken leg comes over rice. The rice has some pickled veggies (diced) and a nice house sauce on top.
Someone ordered a pork chop over rice with a thick saucy gravy. I'll try that next. I haven't been here in like 8 years but the prices have remained low and quality is the same. You can smell the delicious fried "anything" just at the store front.
I also ordered the Shanghai rice cakes. Soft and chewy, the way I like it. Comes with pork and cabbage and shrimp. This is my hubby's favorite. He was like "you knew about this place for years and only took me here now". We've been married over ten years but he's not always with me when I'm food shopping. LOL I guess this will be his new go to spot.
The only thing I love more than omakase is cheap Chinatown eats. Lots of reviews for this place, so I gave it a go.
It's a tiny hole in the wall for sure, and they are cranking out the fried chicken. I kid you not when I was say I was in the place for 30 seconds start to finish to order the fried chicken over rice.
You get a hefty bowl easily weighing in at a pound, but that weight is mostly rice and gravy. The chicken, as others have said, is nicely crisp and still juicy, but the portion of chicken itself is on the smaller side. The rice with the gravy was just ok.
This place is fine for a quick in and out cheap bite, but for me, Wah Fung is still the way to go for the best value and quality Chinatown eats (and yes, I know they are completely different restaurants serving completely different dishes).
May Wah is a staple in Chinatown best known for their chicken leg over rice. Just $5.50 for a deliciously filling meal plus a tea leaf egg (optional). Food is served quickly and seating has never been a problem for me. I always find craving this place and coming back.
All's I know is, I was looking for a totally different place after jury duty let out, but as soon as I stumbled on this one, I wasn't leaving.
Fast Food is right–a team of Chinese ladies will take your order and deliver a $5 lunch within 60 seconds.
I went with the black pepper chicken leg over rice, wonderful in its simplicity. Delicious, too! A generous helping of chicken, with some kind of peppery gravy on the side, some Chinese veggies, and a soy-dipped egg.
Real peasant food the way it ought to be!
After trying Taiwan Bear House yesterday, I longed for some real taiwanese porkchop on rice with minced pork sauce and veggies and all that goodness. I came to May Wah's Yelp page to drool over photos of the fried chicken legs and porkchop on rice combos and was disappointed to find that I never wrote a review for this amazing place. My bad. In my opinion, this place is a MUST EAT when visiting NYC. There I said it. Why is it a must eat you ask?
It is the quintessential hole in the wall joint. Im surprised Andrew Zimmern or Anthony Bourdain hasn't done a show about this place yet. I've been frequenting this place for over 15 years and the quality and taste remains the same—fan-freaking-tastic! This isn't a Michelin starred joint (but it should be). This is your basic fried pork chop or fried chicken leg over a a steaming heap of white rice topped with their homemade minced pork gravy/sauce with a side of chopped green veggies and a tea egg. Depending on your tolerance for salt, I'll have to admit that it can be on the salty side. Now that I think of it, this would be the perfect hangover food–greasy, salty, carby. At about $5.75/plate, you can't go wrong–especially in NYC where a cup of tea can cost you upwards of $7.
If you want to try an authentic taiwanese staple, I highly recommend this place. I knock off a star for the physical space. Lord knows they made a killing hocking pork chops and fried chicken for so many years…time for a renovation.
Really angry at myself that I've been ignoring May Wah for all these years. There's nothing like a pork chop or chicken leg over rice, and they just do that so well here. Simple, but pretty darn good. I'm a big fan of Taiwanese comfort food, and there just really isn't enough of it in Manhattan, in my opinion. There's Taiwan Pork Chop House nearby, and they have a bit more of a diverse menu, but when all you want is meat over rice and you want it quick, May Wah is the way to go.
For $5.75, you can get a pork chop or chicken leg over rice, complete with pickled veggies, a tea egg, and minced pork gravy. And you gotta get it with that tea egg. The chicken leg and pork chops is deep fried (without batter) and it's nicely crisped with a juicy center. Heh. The entire combination of everything is just really satisfying. Sure, it's a bit salty, and the meat can get a little greasy, but offset with the rice, it's just the way to go for a satisfying (albeit unhealthy) meal. They also have noodles, soups and rice cakes as well, but my friends tell me that the way to go is the meat over rice, so I'm inclined to believe them. It's not that I wouldn't try the other stuff, but when a chicken leg over rice is what you want, a chicken leg over rice is what you gonna get.
Service is pretty much the same as any hole-in-the-wall joint in Chinatown, but they're at least efficient. I've never been in the sit-down section (the left door), but it seems pretty standard. Prices are ridiculously good, and the value is quite unbeatable.
Easily a go-to for when I'm in the area, looking for a quick, cheap meal. I'm more inclined nowadays to order a few takeout plates, and then save them for meals later in the week. It's a shame that they're not open late, because I feel like they would make a killing with the late night crowd. Just saying.
Been here ever since I was like 5. Still here and the business is always booming! Get the chicken leg! It's very famous here and their sauce with the veggies are just as good. It comes as a combo. I usually get a chicken leg over rice and it'll come with all that and don't forget to add the egg, extra charge perhaps but definitely worth it!
Affordable, fast, and delicious just like you'd expect. Those mustard greens and that sauce are delicious, definitely don't skip those on whatever you choose.
p.s. the tea egg is hard boiled and fully cooked inside.
