Idk it was dead an the worker didn't look interested in taking my order so I left.
Maybe next time or maybe not. "/
Man, I LOVE Maya Taqueria! Their super veggie burrito with sauteed kale is freaking delicious. There's always enough seating, both indoor and outdoor. Also- you can BYOB at no extra charge and they've got a bottle opener for your convenience (but you're an alcoholic and carry your own opener, so this tidbit is irrelevant). They have a big salsa bar to choose from, as well. The one meh thing I can say is that their guacamole isn't something to write home about. Too many onions and too little avocado.
FAST lunch time delivery service, AUTHENTIC Mexican food, and GREAT SELECTION of all the classics. My favorite part about this place is that each item allows you to customize: Do you want soft corn tortilla taco, hard corn tortilla taco, or soft flour tortilla taco? Do you want chicken, beef, chorizo, pork? Do you want Mexican rice or brown rice with that? Do you want black beans, pinto beans, or refried beans with that?
The selection is fantastic and the prices are super reasonable. You can order ala carte or in a combination meal. They also deliver the combination meals with sour cream, salsa, and guacamole – very impressive! This is a solid little place that gets a big thumbs up from me!
an honest little place with a good array (6?) of homemade self-serve salsas and hot sauces. good-sized veggie burrito for the reasonable price of under $10. no frills decor and tables. reasonable horchata. near unnameable books. good stuff.
Since I moved to Park Slope, I've been looking for a staple Mexican takeout spot. I may have found it!
Maya Taqueria is sort of a hole in the wall with a huge yard in the back. Well, that's exactly what it is. The food is ready quickly, but tastes fresh. The prices are okay. With the type of establishment it is, I would expect prices to be a tiny bit cheaper or portions to be a little bit bigger.
Ordered on seamless for pick up and my grand total miraculously jumped ~$4 for some unknown reason. I guess I won't be doing that again.
Anyway, I got the rotisserie chicken a la carte for around $12 – it's a small whole chicken that comes in a paper container and bag cut out on both sides (a little bit messy).
For my boyfriend, I ordered the shrimp and steak platter with black beans and mexican rice for around $14. I thought the packaging for his meal was really neat as each food had a compartment of its own and endured the long/bumpy ride into the city intact. He said the grilled shrimp was really delicious and seemed to enjoy his meal thoroughly.
His platter was supposed to come with guacamole and salsa but both come in really small cups – they could certainly be more generous on the condiments front.
As for the store itself – well, I was only in there for about 2 minutes to pick up my food (there was one other lady at the counter). It's a small shop in a good neighborhood/on a very nice block and I wasn't expecting for the food to be buffet style behind the counter (a la boston market). Anyways, the store was clean and the worker friendly so all was well on that front.
I don't see myself rushing back anytime soon (maybe I needed to order something less vanilla) but it's a good staple to have in the back of my mind if I'm in the area.
I was born and raised in LA. This place is legit.
My ONLY complaint is that the fish tacos are made with ice berg lettuce instead of "cabbage" – which is the true Baja style.
The fish tacos were tasty, could have been more crispy but overall generous portions.
The reason why this is 4 stars: the SALSA BAR is on point. I literally took shots of the red sauce. No lie.
Totally delicious Mexican food that reminds me of home (California). I got a veggie burrito, which already comes with the stuff a super burrito has (no need to pay extra for guacamole, like so many places make you do). You can also choose to have it "naked" (just the basics) or with fillings like tofu, spinach, mushrooms, etc.
The burrito itself was absolutely delicious. My husband had a veggie also, and our friends had nachos and tacos, both of which looked amazing. As advertised, this is true California style, with prices to match. The location is a real hole in the wall, which only makes it feel even more authentic.
Minus one star for the terrible service. It wasn't ALL bad, but it seems as though my experience mirrored that of a few other reviewers. When the lady who took my order came out and handed me a "veggie with rice" burrito, I asked "you mean no rice?" as I ordered my burrito with refried beans and no rice or pico de gallo. She shrugged and handed it to me. So I took a bite and it was indeed wrong. No big deal, right?
So when she came back I told her it was wrong, and then she started arguing with me. Super uncool. After repeating multiple times what I wanted, she begrudgingly took away my burrito. A couple minutes later someone else brought me the correct burrito. Problem solved, and easily too. I just wish I hadn't been given so much attitude.
Not including this "customer is wrong" approach that I experienced, everything else was great, right on down to the Mexican Coca-Cola.
