Pretty good sandwiches. I suppose I was expecting to have a sandwich "experience" based on the reviews, but I just didn't. I work nearby and came during lunch. Service was fast and the staff was friendly.
I got the banh mi and my friend got the chicken cheesesteak. His looked a mess, but he thought it was pretty good. Mine looked neater and tasted good, but the sandwich fell apart because the meat soaked through the bread fold. Maybe toast the bread?
They didn't have fries or anything of the sort, just potato chips.
Anyway, I'd probably return to try other sandwiches since I work a block away. Otherwise, it's fine and I wouldn't make a trip out here.
I spotted this place on my way to work and recognized it from Urbanspace at Grand Central, so wanted to try it. I asked the server what was most popular (The Dragon) and went with that. It sounded amazing, pulled pork with slaw! I chose to go with a half sandwich, which was actually still a great size and was a single bread roll with the filling inside.
Service was really quick and I was on my way. I saved it to eat at home and it was still hot and tasted great! The meat was juicy and tender and the slaw went with it perfectly. The half size was sufficient for me for lunch.
I did feel like I was eating more of a burger than a sandwich, with it being warm and having so much filing. It was more indulgent than I would consider a typical sandwich to be. It isn't really a grab a sandwich on your lunch break at the office kind of option I felt, it is more substantial and 'takeaway food' option.
Love me some Mayhem & Stout. super divey hole in the wall spot down the block from NYU on 38th and 2nd. It sorta is quick messy in a hip/rock sort of way, but the food is great and always hits the spot. They have two different types of slaw which are vinegar and spicy (not really spicy), brown rice and different types of slow cooked meats to accompany it all. Its like a southern brisket chipotle… without the guac. Their prices are reasonable with sandwiches around $9-10 and most plates are $11-14. The slow cooked shredded brisket is super tasty and doesn't come all fatty, which I like. Fewer kCals if you speak my lingo. If your in the area with a lingering hunger that needs to be fed, Mayhem is the way to go.
I came to Mayhem & Stout about two and half years ago when it first opened up and thought it was great. I remember having the short rib & brisket with blueberry sriracha and pickled onions sandwich and thinking it was excellent. It was unique and flavorful. Fast forward to present day and I was in the area of Mayhem & Stout so I thought I'd try another one of their great sandwiches. Unfortunately, it looks like the quality of this establishment has gone down quite a bit. I ordered the cheesesteak made with short rib, house made cheese sauce, and roasted onions and was disappointed. It was no where near as good as the sandwich I had a few years back. It was soggy from the moment I bit into it, which is not an appealing quality in a sandwich.
My fiancée, a vegetarian, had seen a vegetarian meatball sandwich on their menu posted online earlier in the day but when she went to order she was told that the veggie meatball sandwich, though very popular, had been taken off the menu by the owners. My fiancée was disappointed and wasn't in the mood for their vegan pulled spaghetti squash sandwich (the only vegetarian option on the menu), so she just ordered a side of mac 'n' cheese. After a few bites, she said that it tasted like Kraft macaroni and cheese. While that's not necessarily a bad thing, she was expecting more.
We were also put off by the fact that one of the walls in the front of this very tiny walk-in eatery was dedicated to storage of their products (i.e. bottles of water stacked up, condiments in big bags stacked up, etc). It wasn't a good look. Very unprofessional.
Not sure if there was a change of ownership or whether the owners have just gotten lazy, but Mayhem & Stout needs to find Doc & Marty McFly to a take a trip back in time and find some of the quality that used to make it a solid dining establishment.
I have tried the Pulled Pork Doughnut from Mayhem & Stout. In this unique collaboration between two vendors, Mayhem & Stout and Dough have really outdone themselves with the savory and sweet Pulled Pork Doughnut. Mayhem & Stout, an artisan sandwich company that specializes in slow-braised sandwiches, provides tender, juicy pulled pork with house-made BBQ sauce and maple brown sugar hot sauce, while Dough, one of NYC's favorite doughnut shop with innovative flavors inspired by European and Latin American desserts, adds sweetness to the dish with its fluffy, pillowy glaze doughnut with pure vanilla extract and a touch of salt.
Mayhem & Stout is a stand in the Vanderbilt Urbanspace so you know it has to be good. They have a very unique menu of all types of BBQ sandwiches. I ordered the Bahn Mi sandwich and it definitely delivered, but not in the usual NYC type of way. When in NYC, you assume everything you eat will be the very best you'll ever have and that wasn't the case with Mayhem & Stout. My sandwich was good, but not worthy of NYC's best, but still a good experience.
I liked my pulled chicken salad with greens and bell pepper and the cucumber vinaigrette sauce was also light and refreshing. Besides salad, they also serve great sandwiches at a fair price. If you are a carnivore, make sure to order their platter, looks huge in portion!
Since it is located inside the food court in Urbanspace at Vanderbilt, do expect some waiting time. But they will call your number once food is ready.
Surprisingly this place isn't quite as good as what you'd think. I suppose I am spoiled because I've eaten absolutely amazing versions of what they serve (go to Savannah or Birmingham, AL), and by that standard, they come up a bit short. Not bad, in fact fairly good, but not good enough to cause me to want to go back.
