I love bread and I love that I randomly discovered this amazing bakery while in the neighborhood. Unfortunately I was there too late to try the lard bread… I will be back for that! Instead I had the raspberry rugelach and my sister had a cannoli. She said it was one of the best cannolis she has tasted. Since I couldn't get the lard bread, I decided to get a Spinach loaf and this was the best food decision I made that day. The spinach loaf was delicious! I was curious about what it was and loved it! It was very garlicy, which is yummmmmay. But on a side note, lessen on the salt…
The bread is the best! Unfortunately, I don't get to go to Mazzola Bakery quite often, but when I do, I buy as much bread as I can. Everything is freshly made & the aroma alone will get you to go in. Their seven layer cookies are delicious & probably the best I've ever had. They sell cookies, coffee and even make sandwiches. If you're in the area, definitely stop in at least for two loaves (one for the car ride and one to share at home). You won't be disappointed!
Lard bread sounds frighteningly fattening (which it probably is), but it is so worth it.
Other winners include: chocolate croissants, blueberry croissants, and jalapeno bread.
JALAPENO BREAD!
Cash only. I've never had an issue with a line, but the service is pretty spotty and disorienting so don't hesitate to get their attention or else they might never take your order. I've also seen a ton of people order coffee there so I'm assuming that's tasty as well.
Came at 6am, first one in the door. I really wanted to try the lard bread so I got one but when she handed it to me and I felt how soft it was and how good it smelled I immediately asked for another. When I got home about 2 hours later it was still soft and warm. I cut myself a big piece from the middle and it was probably the best piece of bread I've ever had. Worth the trip and the money. Will be back!
Mazzola Bakery is one of the oldest and still family owned and operated bakerys in down town Brooklyn. Came in early on a sunday morning because I heard so many good things about their "lard bread". Lard bread is a long loaf of bread baked with spicy pieces of ham throughout the bread. This bread is something I grew up on being I am from Italian descent and its one of the best I have ever had. I did also try a few of their other baked goods. The chocolate croissant was very good. It was light and flaky with just the right amount of chocolate in the center. Their rainbow cookies where also very good. I also recommend the coffee. It's a small bakery not very large inside at all. I do recommend you get there early in the morning if you want the "Lard bread". It's popular and they do sell out very quickly and its also something you want as soon as it comes out of the baker's oven.
I basically grew up down the block from this bakery, both of my grandmothers lived on union, and I would spend many days at their house, as a kid I would have to go up to mazzolas early in the morning with a dollar and get a seeded bread! It was always nice and warm, and my grandmother would put some whipped butter on it, and have that with coffee! Or make a nice potato & egg sandwich on seeded bread! Oh the memories of this place is incredible! We always had a loaf in the house! And even though I'm all the way in Park Slope I still try my hardest to stop by for a loaf, because a cold cut sandwich taste so much better on this bread, it's always fresh, it's always nice and soft, and some how some way, it's always nice and warm! It's great to see that mazzolas is still there, and as good as I remember it to be as a kid. Hands down the best Italian bread in Brooklyn!
Stopped in after brunch across the street for rainbow cookies, and they were easily some of the best I've ever had. I also picked up a sandwich for later – the prosciutto & mozzarella – which was very simple and tasty.
God's honest best lard bread in town. From the time I was a kid, I use to go "down to the old neighborhood" with my dad where we would go into all these specialty Italian-American shops over the course of about 3 hours. Mazzola has always been on our list as the go-to for lard bread. Check them out and pick up 3 loaves – 2 for when you get home and the other for while you are on your way – you won't regret it.
