Mm, sandwich goodness.
I was in one of those grouchy moods where every single food suggestion sounded unappetizing. Found Meat-A-Tarian on Yelp and decided to try it out. Did not regret it one bit.
The pork belly sandwich was yummy, but a bit too burned/charred, losing some of its usual flavor. The cheesesteak though was excellent. Fries were good but paled in comparison to the garlic pita chips which tasted like they were doused in salt and deep fried. Being a sodium addict, I loved those pita chips!
Price is fair and our order was ready to pick up in 15 minutes after ordering from Eat 24.
Will add this to my regular rotation of "Cheap Eats" in Montclair.
I'm very disappointed with this place …
I decided to stop by because the name said it all
MEAT- A- TARIAN and I was craving a good juicy burger….
Oh the disappointment!!! This place needs Jesus and the 12 apostles…. no no no they need Chef Ramsay ….
OK so first of all the place doesn't have the name of the restaurant outside which puzzled me when looking for the restaurant , once I found it , I proceeded to go in…
First of all I do have to say it looks nice only in the entrance, there's no hostess greeting just a bunch of teenagers (who work there) looking like they hanging out and not working but I guess there's not much work to do being that the place is empty and once I sat down I notice why….
So hubby and I go in and there were 3 teenage boys just staring at us I figured they were customers until one broke silence greeted us with a mouth full and I proceeded to say ummm we could sit anywhere? So finally we sit down , 2 tables were occupied , and the waitress( mind u the staff were all wearing their street clothes to the point that one the staff was sagging, so u couldn't differentiate who worked there or what) was standing having a conversation with the table next to us with a plate of food eating so I figured OK she must not be the waitress….
So after 5 minutes of sitting there playing with our thumbs because no one had come to us to give us the menus , the waitress decides to stop eating while standing and hands us over the menus… so I was like OK I guess she works here. (Also the table she was mingling with seem to be the owner of the place, that should of been clue 1 to run because customers come first)
She was nice but strange … Didn't give any eye contact and seemed very nervous and also young …. OK it could of been her first day so I dismissed it…. the menu what a BORING menu… with the name MEAT A TARIAN , it comes along with a huge responsibility to serve MEAT lots of options that's what drew me to this place the name ….
It only had cheap steak meat which they use to make a cheese steak(wrong meat) lamb and grilled chicken….
Now , the person who created this menu and restaurant is completely clueless about food and how it works .. First of all ,the name doesn't go with the food… tzaziki sauce , gyro?? It seems it was meant to be a Greek restaurant…
So we placed the order , I placed cheese steak sandwich with fries, hubby chicken platter…
While waiting for our food we received our drinks in a can no cup or straw … really?? Have to ask for it?
Once that happened I already knew I was going to be disappointed…
Food arrives I got my cheese steak sandwich which was nothing special – I would of made a slamming sandwich at home…. it lacked favor , heating , (cheese was inedible)and a real chef… hubby's platter was yellow rice which was bland, a piece of iceberg lettuce and 2 sad slices of tomatoes, with slice pieces of grilled chicken equivalent to half a chicken breast…
The tzaziki sauce was watery , watery like milk…
Now the way the food was presented ughhhh where is Chef Ramsey when u need him?
Also, no napkins… do I need to ask for napkins as well..
Another thing the music was so dark like the whole dinning area I felt like I was in a dungeon… the owner manager whatever seems to not care at all about this place it has potential but they need to start by renovating , changing the menu and calling Chef Ramsey NEVER AGAIN … As we left everyone stared us down including the owner no good bye come again thank u for coming …. what a horrible place… I mean this is Montclair there's nothing but good restaurants …. why wouldn't u go above and beyond to make paying customers your priority… and I left HANGRY = hungry & angry…. Feel like slapping everyone who gave a good review on the back of their neck maybe , their taste buds will come back ….
I had to wipe my hands until I made it home…
Late night spots that offer great food are hard to find but Yelp reviews about this place caught my attention so I figured I'd give it a shot. Their menu is limited so I was reluctant at first since nothing really sounded tempting until the gentlemen (and one of the chefs it seemed, I didn't get his name…ughh) explained the menu.
You see there is no explanation on how the cheesesteak is made or what is included in the "platter" on the paper menu or board so you're forced to ask which can be daunting for a first-time customer. At least I hate to come across as that annoying and picky customer that has a question about every single item in the menu and if there are any alternatives available. Nonetheless, this guy was friendly, helpful and seemed to really know and understand his menu.
In an effort to avoid confusion (like I went through here), a platter for $10 is served with rice and a side salad OR you can get seasoned fries with a drink. I ended up with a chicken platter of fries and a drink when I only wanted a sandwich and a cheesesteak platter served over rice when I wanted it on a bun with fries. Not a big deal but I just don't know at what point my order was miscommunicated.
The chicken was thin cut and had grilled marks on it. BIG plus. Personally I found it a bit over-salted but perhaps the slice of cheese I added on was to blame. Still edible, still good. The lettuce and tomato on the chicken sandwich are seasoned. The seasoned fries were tasty, even cold, though they didn't appear to be handcut fries. Cheesesteak was also good. You get two sauces per meal, I got the "twisted" blue cheese and hot sauce. Good addition to your protein dish.
Maybe my expectations were too high but based on the great reviews on Yelp I was expecting Meat-a-tarian to become my go-to late-night spot. Despite my satisfaction with my meal last night, I'm sad to say it didn't win over my heart (or stomach). Can't say I'm a fan and that I will be advocating for this spot so an A-OK will have to do.
I ordered several fried chicken sandwiches. I actually gave my order several times, as I was asked what I wanted periodically after several intervals of strange silence. They did not have any juice or shakes, just coke and kola champagne…an interesting selection. When the delivery arrived, the food was all cold. The sandwiches were grilled rather than fried. They were very tasty, but they were very small. One little piece of chicken on a bun. Not sure I have ever seen that. It was less meat than a McChicken. It was like a chicken slider. It tasted really good though. I'll give them a few more tries and then update my review.
