The pros:
– Lovely atmosphere, ambience, and decor. Sets the stage for a nice date night.
– Service: our server was a very tall fellow, unfortunately I didn't catch his name. He was awesome and took good care of us all night. Our dessert came out longer than it should've taken so he gave it to us on the house.
– BYOB
– Lamb tagine: probably some of the most tender, flavor-packed, fall-off-the-bone delicious lamb I've had
Having said this, the rest of the meal was just ok.
– Grilled octopus appetizer: cooked well, not at all over cooked or rubbery but small portion size and was kinda bland.
– Roasted eggplant/goatcheese appetizer: tasted good, but again it was gone in a few bites.. So small 🙁
I realize the appetizers resemble tapas style portions but i guess for the price point ($14-15) I was expecting to get slightly bigger portions. If I go to a tapas bar I expect to order small dishes but would expectedly pay less than $10 for each small plate.
After so many years and visits this is still the best restaurant in town. Especially the fish selections – each superbly fresh and natural. No garbage fish here. In fact all the ingredients are top notch. Check out my other reviews – I'm a restaurant Dick and it takes a lot to keep me happy. That is not a problem here. The menu is a bit "familiar" thi but each items always great. The lamb shank is outrageously good and when the chef has tapas its just like Barcelona. This is a very good place – period. No ego maniac chef and foodie idiot. He's the real deal and the food shows it. Great staff. Especially the ladies – professional, friendly beautful and a pleasure to behold. Doesn't hurt.
Prices excellent – but not cheap. For the quality you get it's very high value. Not recommended for people who want splash and opulence over flavor and quality.
My girlfriends and I come here often enough for dinner dates and always love it. The food doesn't disappoint. This time around we started off with the small meze and grilled octopus with hummus and cucumber. Everyone loved their entrees. One friend got the morrocan couscous another got a chicken dish I opted for the scallops and shrimp which were delish. It came with sauteed spinach and mash, yum! We were too stuffed for dessert. The restaurant itself is small but cute. The servers are always very nice and attentive. Great byo spot.
Small restaurant that serves some good food!
Location: Dining in Ridgewood late on a Saturday night usually results in taking some time to find a parking spot. There restaurant looks a bit run down from the outside, but the inside is well kept and clean. Make a reservation here ahead of time because the restaurant is on the small side and it seems like they tend to be crowded.
Food: The food was great! I do have some complaints though about the appetizers. The garlic shrimp is a ripoff for what you actually get. I counted about 8 tiny tiny shrimp in the dish. I've had the same dish in Barcelona, NYC, and Madrid. For the same price, I either got more shrimp at that size or bigger shrimp with around the same number of shrimp. We also ordered the grilled octopus. I'm not a regular octopus eater, but when I see fresh octopus in the market, it is not expensive as many other seafood. You get about 6 small pieces. For our entrees, I ordered the lamb kebob. It was seasoned well, good sized portion, but some pieces were cooked a bit more than others. We also ordered the fillet of Bronzino, which I did enjoy. It's a simple seasoning with some oil on it. Someone else at our table ordered the tajine lamb stew. It was tasty, but it gets boring after a while. So I do suggest either to take some home with you or share it.
Service: All the waiters and waitresses here are very nice. Our waitress asked us if we would like our appetizer when come out of the kitchen or for everything to arrive at the same time. She also asked if anyone had any food allergies that they need to take note of. Water was refilled regularly without having to ask. Utensils were changed in between appetizers and entree.
Overall: The prices here are not cheap. Do expect to leave here spending around $40 per person after tax/tip (not including dessert). This place is BYO, so that does help with the cost a bit. I enjoyed the food and will probably give them another try with some different dishes next time.
I had a lovely experience today. As soon as I walked in, the decor caught my attention (in a good way). During the day, the restaurant is bright, beautiful, and cozy. When the sun sets, the restaurant feels romantic, intimate, and fancy. I love that.
The menu is very simple and straightforward. However, you can tell the owners and/or chef put a lot of thought into it. I ordered the soup of the day and a salad with goat cheese/candied walnuts. The soup was excellent and the salad was so tasty. Warm pita bread and olive oil (with sea salt/black pepper) was also served before the entrees came out. My friend and I also ordered an appetizer (I'm not sure what it's called but it was fried phyllo dough filled with cheese). Absolutely delicious.
Our waiter was very friendly and personable.
Overall, my experience was 5/5 and I will definitely come back in the future.
Had a very enjoyable dinner at Mediterraneo last month. The service was good, the food was tasty and the ambience is quite nice. Not quite a 5 star review yet but pretty darn close.
The food highlights included the tuna tartar appetizer (I think $12 or $14) & the skirt steak ($24). I didn't love the charr they put on the steak personally, but my dad proclaimed it one of the best he's ever had, so I stand corrected. The whole branzino ($27) was also tasty, though I did think it was a tad on the small side. Also the mezze platter is a great item to order for the whole table to share ($12).
Prices aren't particularly cheap here (you'll pay about $40 a person most nights), but being a BYO certainly helps lessen the wallet pain.
I would definitely say Mediterraneo is one of the better semi-upscale BYO restaurants in the area, no doubt.
Love this place!! The octopus is to die for… beats Varka…hands down!!! The service is great…. youngish wait staff who are happy to be there. The chef/owner is very friendly and makes you feel right at home.
For dessert… the tartufo is the best. It is different from the run-of-the mill tartufo you'd get at most restaurants, this tartufo is not the mass-produced Costgo type dessert, but has a small-batch, homemade, quality to it.
Morocco flavors in a comfy Ridgewood restaurant.
The lamb tagine was fall apart tender.
Sauce was mouthwatering and the portion was an excellent size.
Comes with couscous that was fluffy and lite.
Very good dinner spot.
Make a reservation as they have seating times.
