Melt Shop

“It's fried chicken, pepper jack, red cabbage slaw & melt sauce on toasted sourdough.”

“It's also a nice place to go for lunch as all of the restaurants around the financial district have ridiculous lines except this hidden gem.”

  1. 3.5-Stars for Melt Shop, but I rounded up cause they have Tater Tots, which I love and are hard to find.

In some ways, the idea of Melt Shop is better than the actual food.  Meaning, almost everyone loves a grilled cheese or tater tots or a fried chicken sandwich, but after you eat it you feel terrible about yourself, or at least I do, lol.

And Melt Shop is fairly pricey for what you get, in my opinion.

Here's what I've had and my rating:

    1. Classic Grilled Cheese: very good grilled cheese, and bigger than what you'd get at a diner, but also pricier.

    2. Fried Chicken Sandwich: probably the best thing on the menu, and it's huge and heavy, so it could feed two people.

    3. Tater Tots: love tater tots and even though Melt Shop's isn't necessarily the best I've had, they're still pretty good.

    4. Chocolate Truffle Milk Shake: terrible, absolutely terrible.  Do not order a shake here.  I could almost taste all the chemicals in it – took a few sips and threw it away.

One last thing…I highly recommend you eat the food at the restaurant rather than delivery or takeout cause the food doesn't travel well.  It's so much better when you eat it hot right when it comes out, cause by the time you get it at home or in your office, everything is sort of soggy – I've made this mistake before.  So, if you're gonna do Melt Shop, eat your food at the restaurant.

So, l do think Melt Shop is pretty good, and will have it every now and then, especially after a night of drinking, but I try not to make a habit of it as it's pretty greasy and unhealthy.  But have to admit, I do like it.

  2. We were passing by on a weekend after getting into NYC. The entire financial district area is pretty quiet on weekends in general so I was surprised to find this place open. We were starving. No surprise, there was barely any wait. The food came out decently fast.

They are known for their grilled cheese so we obviously tried that! I had a more simple one. Overall, it was okay. It was filling enough but nothing special for the price I paid. I'm not sure if I'll stop by again but I might recommend it for the other special grilled cheese dishes.

  3. So, visiting fabulous NYC I found this yummy spot in FiDi. I wanted something simple and tasty, and Melt Shop answered the call. The Classic grilled cheese was very tasty, lightly buttery with the yummiest crispy edges. Reasonably priced for NYC, it hit the spot. Staff was friendly and the restaurant was well kept. Though I did not have them, I really like that they offer tater tots instead of the common fries. It gives them a unique twist which I appreciate. Melt Shop is definitely worth checking out if you are in the mood for simple and good food!

  4. Wandering around the Financial District, we didn't want to go to a long sit down, fancy schmancy place to have some lunch.  After checking out some of the Halal food carts on the street, which didn't really tickly my fancy, I hit up the good ol' Yelp to see what was near us.

Found a sandwich place called Melt Shop so we were on our way.  Definitely busy inside with the work crowd especially around lunch time.  When walking in, stay to the left, don't go to the right like we did.  A friendly New Yorker lady told us "the line is over there"…..thank you lady!  So be sure you are in the correct line.

Everything looked pretty good so we just got a Fried Chicken Sandwich, a Grilled Chicken sandwich and some Shop Tots.  Shop Tots were pretty awesome, nicely crisp tots dusted with parmesan cheese & parsley.  A great side to accompany the tasty sandwiches.  As for the sandwiches, the grilled was quite good, nice melty cheese, truffle mayo, tomatoes on lovely toasted bread.   The fried chicken sandwich was even better, delicious slaw, melty cheese, and their special sauce.

Good sized sandwiches, cut in half if you want to switch it up with your partner in crime, prices were ok as well, staff was also pretty friendly.

Overall, glad we came by and had a tasty lunch!

  5. food: fried chicken. the chicken itself was bland, but the sandwich as a whole was a great combo. i will definitely want to try the others. ***4/5

service: clean space and the servers were nice. you can see through the kitchen and watch your sandwiches be made. ***3/5

value: if it included a side with the price, it wouldve been perfect. i was still hungry after the sandwich. totally worthwhile for another visit. ***3/5

  6. This particular review was inspired by Mike C.'s mouth-watering pic of the Maple Bacon sandwich 🙂 Then again all of Mike's pics are just delicious food ads that make you want to lick your screen.

This particular location in the financial district is a huge hit with the locals. It was jammed packed when I walked in. I was on a long line that took about 10 minutes before I got to the register.  They have an amazing combination of different grilled cheese sandwiches, some that include fried chicken. I wanted to stick to the classic however, and go with Mike's suggestion so I ordered the Maple Bacon.

The bread was very neatly grilled with just the perfect crisp to the crust, the cheese ohhh soo gooey and creamy!! The bacon added a nice salty touch that rounded out the whole sandwich.

  7. I came in here wanting to try it out. Ordered the chicken sandwich and shop tots. The chicken sandwich was so delicious, I didn't want it to end even though I was more than full already. The red cabbage slaw in it was a perfect added ingredient and I was really loving it. The shop tots was so damn good and I usually hate tots. They were so wonderfully seasoned and just melted in my mouth, delicious.

They also serve beer so that's a win in my book. I was very happy with the service and quality of this place. Will defiantly return in near future.

    (Ps Long Island location sucks)

  8. I think my pictures say it all. Way too much mayo, way too little chicken. Grilled chicken sandwich turned out to be (for the most part) mouthful of just bread, cheese, and mayo. One can tell how much effort or care was put into assembling this sandwich just by the glob of mayo itself. Definitely not the Melt Shop I enjoyed and remembered from two years ago.
