I'm on the fence ratings-wise. I didn't like this as much as some of the places in Brooklyn but is that unfair competition?
The jerk chicken, steamed vegetables and rice and peas were all pretty good. The spices had a good kick, just maybe a tiny bit less complexity than other establishments. The fried chicken was a little like Shake and Bake which isn't necessarily bad.
Mmm… Jamaican food that his the spot.
I ordered a large jerk chicken – and I can't believe I finished everything. Everything was delicious, even the mixed vegetable side.
My fiancé ordered curry goat, also delicious!
We have to go back for the oxtail, which they didn't have the day we went.
We stopped by this hole in the wall spot after seeing the yelp reviews and were not disappointed. The place is unassuming and clean and does a huge carry out business.
I can't speak for the delivery but the in restaurant service/counter is SLOW. But once we got some jerk chicken and ox tail we were all happy campers! The plates were HEAPING with rice, beans, plantains, and meat choice. The small jerk chicken was certainly enough for a filling meal. The ox tail is their stand out plate. The flavor was rich and the meat just fell off the bone.
$19 bux and we got two massive plates and a drink. If the food came out a bit faster they would have 5 stars!
Deep, delicious flavors! Very satisfying in aroma, taste, texture, and portion size. I sampled the Oxtail, Roti-Chicken, Jerk Chicken, and beef patty. While the beef patty was pretty standard, the other three dishes seriously knocked my socks off. The Oxtail and Jerk Chicken each came with rice and beans, sauteed cabbage, and fried sweet plantains. The Roti-Chicken seemed to be braised in yellow curry sauce and with the soft, chewy roti, it was very tasty and comforting. All meats were so tender, clean, pretty lean, and they fell right off the bone. Depth of flavor was consistent skin to bone for all preparations. I had ginger beer for the first time and it tasted even better than I had expected. I hope locals patronize this place. It definitely deserves solid business.
I finally made it back for lunch. Their space is very big, clean (with dark sleek wooden chairs and tables), and well lit with lots of windows and a view of the Roosevelt Island bridge. It seems like they have a good take-out business, a lot of the workers were sitting around watching futbol, and they seem to know the locals and Con Ed workers.
I got the oxtail and it was as good as I expected. They only have the oxtail in a medium ($10.50) or large size. The medium came with sauteed cabbage, carrots, and strings of collards, 2 plantains, rice & red beans, and about 5 pieces of oxtail. I asked for light on the sauce. What a great lunch! with a little bit of leftovers.
They have a new breakfast special, beef patties, and a few cakes in their fridge as well.
I was in the area and looked up caribbean spots which is what I had a taste for and didnt want to drive to Brooklyn to my jerk chicken spot. I didnt have high expectations of the food and ordered a small plate of jerk chicken, rice and peas with plantains. Boy was I surprised and pissed with myself for not ordering a medium. The food was delicious and the spiciness of the chicken was just right. Some caribbean spots cant get the jerk spiciness balanced right but this spot did. I would definitely return to try some other items on the menu.
Getting tired of eating the same food within my immediate area I decided I wanted something different. After much back & forth I decided to try the Melting Pot. Before walking over I called to make sure they were open and to make sure they still had Jerk Chicken.
The lady that answered the phone confirmed this for me so I walked over. Upon arriving I noticed it was extremely empty and hot inside the restaurant. It took a few minutes before the lady came out to greet me, as I watched her standing in the kitchen. Once she came out she and I was greeted she asked me what I wanted and proceeded to make my plate of Jerk Chicken, Peas & Rice, Stew Cabbage, & plantations. I also ask for a Veggie patty.
As she was putting the Veggie patty in a bag she noticed that it was hard and explained to me that the patty was old & hard from sitting in the warmer all day, and that she couldn't sell it to me. I was very appreciative of her doing this because some people would have sold it anyway.
The food, omg was soooooo gooood, I will definitely come back to try other dishes, and the food was reasonably priced. A small plate was around $7.00.
The restaurant appeared clean, but for very dark and depressed looking. I also enjoyed the music that was playing while waiting for my food.
