Out of all the new food stalls that opened in Turnstyle@Columbus Circle, Meltkraft definitely dominated the aroma department. It's hard to beat out the smell of freshly fried donuts, but from the second you walk down the stairs you're immediately lured by the smell of melted butter and crusty cheese.
Decided to order the Somerset, a grilled cheese sandwich with Gruyere, cured ham, cornichon pickles, and whole grain mustard. I like to pretend that I know cheese but more often than not I just pick names I know. In this case I chose a cheese that I love using in my Mac and cheeses. The Gruyere cheese was definitely one of the most artisanal cheeses I've had in a sandwich and it did not disappoint. The funkiness of the cheese was perfectly paired with the large grain mustard seeds and the saltiness of the ham. I could have done without the pickles, they did offer bite but it seemed a bit out of place for some reason.
As a heads up, there is no seating in the shop but Turnstyle has conveniently provided some standing space. It just seemed a bit far from the storefront. I would be a bit wary of the paper containers that they give you the sandwich in. In the short walk I could start to feel my sandwich get a bit soggy. Make sure you eat it soon!
For those that work in the Columbus circle area, I would definitely consider Meltkraft a new lunch option. I look forward to coming back and trying their other options!
Pretty tasty grilled cheese sandwich with nice bread and tasty cheese. It would have been nice to have more than a tiny slice of ham in the sandwich given it was $9. Will have to try the other locations to see how they differ. I thought this place was good just a bit pricey.
