  1. I like Mendy's for what it is.

Toasted everything bagel with chicken salad…very good.

Brisket sandwich…good, not great. Sometimes it is better than other times. Don't expect 2nd Ave Deli or Katz's…but still good for 10 bucks.

Hot dogs and knishes are also great.

Occasionally they have goulash….nice on a cold day.

  2. Mediocre but we order from here for our Kosher folks.  Bagels are ok but not great. It's a food court, albeit a fancy one, so ambiance not an issue.  If we didn't order kosher I'd probably skip it.

  3. Small portions, overpriced, and not good.

Had the half sandwich / half soup combo here for like $13. Both were very small.

The turkey sandwich was very bland and had very little turkey on it, the bread was also whatever.

The matzoh ball soup was a little better but way too buttery.

Should have checked Yelp before I decided to eat lunch here.

  4. Meh. Just meh meh meh.. Not horrible but not worthy of 3 stars.  Granted this is a food court, however Grand Central Terminal food stands are usually above average.  The soup and half sandwich for $12.95 (with tax is $14).. Sounds like a good deal, eh? I just wanted to grab a nice lunch to eat on the train.. I watched the man take pre-sliced corned beef from under the counter (first bad indication).. And I ended up with a half a mustard sandwich with 2 slices of corned beef thrown together on rye and the most bland yet incredibly salty matzo ball soup I've ever had the displeasure of consuming…  Proceed with caution.

I've gone a few times (optimistic me hoping they'll get it right..) and had the same mediocre experience.. The last time, I pulled a good portion of the corned beef off the sandwich – It was so hard and chewy and grayish – it was inedible. I love a good corned beef, pastrami, or brisket sandwich and am willing to pay upwards of $18 for a really good one.. This place should be ashamed of the crap they serve up and try to pass of as good NYC kosher deli fare.

  5. So I have only been here once, and my experience with what I ordered was great. I had the pastrami on rye and though it was pricey for a food court sandwich, t was absolutely delicious. I would definitely order this again.

  6. As a Native New Yorker how insulting that Mendy's would not have bialys (that was the guy ahead of me from Queen's gripe) I agree. And then to top it off I order a bagel with cream cheese. The bagel was disgusting. It was friggin' moist. What is that? I did not want it toasted. But I've never eaten an untoasted bagel that was soft and mushy. And the cream cheese? Well if that's what you want to call it? It was some cream mess with veges shoved inside. I think some of you are right. I will go outside next time I am up at the crack of dawn to catch a train with time to kill and go get a real bagel. As my dude said in front of me on line "Time to close shop!!" Yeah I agree. We bonded for a moment. They don't even carry cream for coffee!! Seriously!!?

Anyways I scarf down half so I don't starve and pray that when I get home I make it before my blood sugar drops and I don't bite the hand of some poor stranger. Alas, I survived. And no hands were lost during my travels.

  7. The west side of the Grand Central Terminal generally has a lower batting average than the larger, eastern side. While the east contains a Shake Shack, the chicken tenders spot and a Golden Crust, the west side is saddled with greasy Chinese, dry Italian and an overpriced bodega.

I blame the neighborhood for why i had never tried either the meat or dairy side of the Mendy's section of the terminal. I considered going to both sides and creating traif feast, but the deli actually has a combo. I went generally traditional, with the matzo ball soup and a pastrami on multigrain. (The standard brusque New York deli experience appeared here, as when I asked what bread was available, a man pointed to a foggy box. Not only did this make the bread look old, it's hard to identify bread through frosted surfaces.)

The meat is better than what Joe Biden might find on an Amtrak dining car, and certainly better than what's served on most Metro North routes (nothing). It's a solid portion, one that thankfully eschews the New York tradition of oversized sandwiches and outlandish prices. The soup, with its rich chicken stock, honestly felt like something one of those delis might actually serve.

In the frenetic and artificially lit surroundings of the west side, it's a reasonable place to stop and grab a bite.

  8. Before coming here, I'd heard some people in our NY office say less than flattering things about Mendy's. I now see why…

How are you going to serve me a matzo ball soup without chicken or matzo balls? The pastrami was terrible and soggy. The pickles were big but tasted and smelled funny. Not sure what's going on here but there's really no reason to eat here when there are plenty of other delis in town.
