Best grocery store in Sunnyside. Even though I live on the other side of Queens blvd, I'll venture out of my way for you, Met! They've got a wider selection of products (more American) and they are in the similar price range as Trader Joe's. I love that I was able to find powdered peanut butter for only $5! I also found Nopalina flax seed plus which goes great in a protein shake. They also have a much better selection of spices compared with Associated and Fresh n Save. They also have low priced organic canned beans!
After grocery shopping in Manhattan for 2 years, it was utterly jaw dropping to see how much cheaper things cost here. A block of regular cheese can cost you $5 in Manhattan while here at Met Supermarket, for the same type of cheese and brand, it costs $3. (Oh yes, I love cheese! Who doesn't?). I'm also happy to see that they sell a lot of ethnic food tailored to the diversity of neighborhood. It will definitely be my go-to place to satisfy my Asian snack cravings. The vegetables here look really fresh and clean compare to the Food Emporiums I used to go to in UES. Now grocery shopping is fun again.
This Met is open 24 hours!!! It's hard to beat that. But unfortunately
1.) Prices are a little high. High enough that you wouldn't want to do full blown grocery shopping there. It's just good for picking up a couple things.
2.) Worst. organization. I have EVER seen in a supermarket! I lived in the neighborhood for probably a year before I finally ASKED a checkout girl, "So, uh, where's the milk?" Because the milk is hidden in this tiny corner of the store! The whole store is like a giant maze. I guess that's what they need to do to fit so much in a tiny space.
If you have a cart or a car, try to go to Stop and Shop on 48th Street instead…
The market definitely reflects the neighborhood, having both a wide selection of Asian foods (i.e. Korean Samanco ice cream fish and literal buckets of kimchi!), alongside regular groceries and other diverse NY staples such as Goya products, Irish oatmeal and lox – and a really good craft beer selection, surprisingly enough! At first I found it to be a little chaotic (which makes it sometimes feel not totally clean), but they recently went through a makeover/reorganization, so it's slightly better now.
The prices are pretty good – and although they are trying to be a little more organic/upscale to keep up with the times, the neighborhood is not totally gentrified yet, so a big positive is that very often some of the fancier (and normally pricier) items like organic coconut milk and local yogurt, are on sale. The cashiers range from apathetic to grumpy to nice-to-everyone-but-you. Overall, I am super happy that this is my local grocery store!
You would be hard pressed to find a supermarket that stands by you in a time of need, e.g. when a hurricane is about to ravage the city! As Hurricane Irene came and went, it left us with fallen trees and flooding. One thing Irene wasn't able to do was close down Met Food. Met stayed true to its claim of staying open 24 hours. It remained a viable option for food and drinks for residents as the storm kept us under house arrest. If nothing else, this type of reliability is worth a special mention.
Thank you, MF!
This Met Foods serves the multi ethnic diversity of Sunnyside, Queens particularly the strong Asian presence.
A deli counter offers the daily specials where I was enlightened with New England Clam Chowder soup at $2.99; a bakery counter inhabits the same space as the deli. Three Chocolate Chip (without nuts) cookies at $1.20 was a sweet delight. I was surprise to find my many favorite Asian sweets–Pocky large size at $5.99. Met Food, a local Queens supermarket not as elaborate as Stop & Shop, but this Met Food carries more choices compared to other standard Met Foods and is moderately priced.
The market is a 2 because they have a lot of "to-be-expired" or already expired items that they just throw into "sales" to get rid of them.
YOU are not getting a deal.
The plus is that it is very local for the community to buy any asian specific grocery needs however is another Japanese specialty store across from Queens Blvd.
Their Deli sandwiches are actually very good. Cold or hot subs are great, their salads are also very yummy even though they do just leave them overnight (for several nights).
When you catch them on a fresh night, it is good.
They have a lot of sales on Entermann's breads and cakes, so that's always good.
Very cold place, must suck for the employees.
The best Philly cheese sandwich (when you get provolone). People are always friendly. However, the prices are ALWAYS off! Thankfully, the cashiers will fix it once you address it. So the high stars are mainly for the deli since they can make some mean sandwiches!
