I didn't have an aweful experience here but it isn't anything great.
I came with two of my friends on a whim as we wanted to hit up a happy hour before my friend was leaving the city. This place was the first sign we saw so we went for it.
The service here was a bit slow considering there were not a lot of people here. I feel like being attached to a hotel doesn't always ring in the best food and drinks but again, we were in a bit of a rush and didn't have time to really look around midtown.
We eat ordered a drink and an appetizer to share as we all just wanted a snack. We settled on the hummus which was just okay. It's size did make for a good snack. Our drink portions were also surprisingly huge. No complaints, but wow!
Overall, this place just isn't that great. There are so many other awesome restaurants and places for happy hour that I just can't give this place high marks.
I must admit. I was NOT expecting this place to pull out 5 stars from my miserly use of stars, but they did it.
Starting with the genuinely friendly hostess who was also doubling as bartender and waitress on this slow Sunday evening.
Kicking off the dinner with a very nice Riesling, and quickly followed up by the Shrimp Scampi appetizer, which so sizzling, and clean, it was a joy to languish over the sauce. (bread sticks a little salty. Olives, great)
I opted for the Chicken as the main entrée, at only $22. and what a MOUNTAIN of Food! (see all pics)
I recently discovered this discovery channel show called "cut this in half" where they cut a Jumbo Jet or a Fire truck in half to show the inside view. I think this chicken must've been on that show, cause this thing was HUGE! Half of that went home for tomorrow's lunch.
Nicely nestled on top of greatly seasoned mashed potatoes, with some corn mixed in there.
(My partner had the New York Strip, which was a little dry, so I wouldn't go there for steak)
Then wrapping the entire thing with the Tiramasu. Not too much, but perfectly rum soaked cake with those sexy dollops of whip cream on each side.
Wait staff was very attentive, and the entire dining room has an "open air" appearance, where you can watch the chefs do their thing.
Very nice, slightly relaxed, laid back feeling overall.
Came here for my department christmas lunch
Got the burger and it was delicious…
Only complain I would have is that they should give us some bread or soemthign to munch on while we waited for our food. It took really long
Came in for happy hour because I was hoping that this hotel bar would have ice-cold air conditioning. Although the bar area wasn't really that cooled, I eventually cooled off with their happy hour specials, including $7 wines, $5 beers, and 4 different $6 appetizers. I opted for the chardonnay, and it came with a decently heavy pour and tasted well. They also had several decent brews on tap. The chicken quesadilla was just okay – pretty plain and served with sour cream and roasted veggies on the side. The chef from the open kitchen area then stopped by with a free canape of asparagus wrapped in phyllo dough which actually really hit the spot. It wasn't crowded in here, and it was a great, quiet happy hour spot on the otherwise crowded 35th Street midtown area.
Metro Grill is like a more informal Capital Grille with a slimmed-down menu of the standard Americana staples (pork chops, steak, hamburger, salads, etc.). There's also less decorative fanfare than your Capital Grille-ish place (want to have your own wine case with name? FORGET IT. Plus I don't drink anyways.)
I had the French onion soup because it's my favorite soup, and it was delicious. Too often, this soup just becomes a salt receptacle, but not here. Had meatballs and spaghetti for entree, which weren't too bad either, though spaghetti is not exactly a dish with a lot of upside (key measure here at merlinchow3). The stars of that entree — the meatballs — were terrific, though, and cooked at just the right temperature so that it didn't taste like either rubber or something so bloody that they might send me to the ER.
As we know, the Penn Station area is kind of a restaurant wasteland, and this place is just slightly out of the immediate cachement. Not a bad place to go before you catch a game at MSG, where the Knicks unfortunately lost that night in a 1OT. Ugh!
Very standard hotel bar/restaurant that I popped into once on St. Patrick's Day. The bartender, who was very pretty and from Poland, was very sweet. Metro Grill was far from memorable but it served its purpose and wasn't as packed as the neighboring Irish pubs.
Again a nice lunch especially between morning museum visits and a Broadway matinee. Lamb burger deliciously, soups and salads nice. Good service in a quiet atmosphere.
