An average cafeteria. Given the quality, the pricing is astronomical. I guess part of the reason is that some visitors are not willing to pay recommended full price admission. The Museum has to make profits in order to maintain the huge collection.
While the Met is my favorite museum in the world, I regularly experience shock and dismay when I go down to the basement cafeteria. I always sneak in my own lunch but perhaps buy a $3.50 cup of inferior coffee just to be able to sit down and eat.
Every time I visit I note that the prices have gone even more skyward. Tell me, is it reasonable to charge $6.25 for a really tiny fruit tart? Or how about $4.20 for a boring looking piece of pound cake. A $1 water bottle costs upwards of $3.50! And so it goes with the rest of the food. An ordinary lunch for 4 could easily cost more than $100.
Really, how can such a world-class place cheat the visiting public like this??
BTW, the Members' Dining Room is also horrible: way overpriced for mediocre food with a stuffy, old-fashioned ambience. The Met should really learn how to run restaurants from MOMA!
The cafeteria is way overpriced and the food is absolute garbage. $16/lb for the majority of the food. A dinner-sized plate of pasta is $13 (aka a single portion). A tiny bag of chips is $2.85. A cookie is $4. Cupcakes are $5.25. Water is $3.25.
– They have free water stations in the cafeteria so I'd pass on buying a bottle of water. – Since the admission includes multiple entries and exits, I highly recommend leaving the museum for food.

The taste of the food is fine.

A total rip off of a cafeteria.
