This review is solely based on their daytime "tacos only"
I came here after the gym with a friend and was was told they only served tacos. They were pretty cheap we we each ended up ordering 4 and were stuffed. They served margaritas, too. I got their vegetable tacos, which were not your typical generic underwhelming peppers onions. I was very pleased with them, and my friend liked the chicken tacos. I will come back here to try dinner!
The mac and cheese balls, while not mexican or bbq were great, added bacon on top and you're set. Also had the guac with chicken and it was a nice addition. Ended with a steak, and it was cooked to perfection, a good place to go if you want tex/mex food.
The service was the only good thing about my experience here.
The food was terrible and over priced. I ordered tacos with a side of rice and beans. The taco was not very good a my rice and beans was served in a sauce dish a very tiny sauce dish. The drinks were terrible I even ordered a second margarita with a shot of tequila and nothing. I feel like I threw my hard earned money away !!!
super friendly staff and knowledgeable bartender
my friend ordered a beer that he didn't like and bartender was able to exchange it for him. offered tasting of the tap for something he liked
tacos come in pairs and great for sharing
MexiBBQ is one of those places that looks cool, feels cool, but you know isn't going to blow your socks off. No chain-like Mexican food places ever really do.
I've had dinner here with my fiancé and it's been delicious to mehhhhh to decent to, "oooh, not awful! Nice!". I've had their cheese burger, their ribs and I've done brunch here. BRUNCH is absolutely when you'll get the see the good side of this place. It's like $25 with unlimited boozy booze – beer or brunch cocktails. With MexiBBQ's pretty good beer selection, this is pretty great.
For dinner, their menu can be hit or miss. They have weekday specials that are pretty good. I've done their "Ribs Night" – the boy enjoyed them and we both thought they were pretty okay. But brunch here is a completely different ball game.
Last time my sweetheart and I enjoyed brunch here, he ordered "The Hangover Cure" ($14) This consists of Corn tortillas simmered in spicy salsa verde and salsa roja, layered with sliced grilled chicken and chorizo and topped with 2 fried eggs. He said it was very filling, but he slurped it up like it was his job.
I ordered their French Toast ($11). This was really nicely prepared thick-sliced Challah bread with a Frosted Flakes crust. FROSTED FLAKES CRUST PEOPLE…and fresh berries which I gave away, lol. I hope to return for brunch again soon so I can try their Panko crusted and deep fried macaroni & cheese balls.
I'm between 3 and 4 stars for this place, leaning on 3 since brunch is roughly a 4 but dinner and some of the overall menu items can end up being more of a 3. Service here is always good and you'll get seated quickly on any given night.
MexiBBQ isn't awwwwwwful, but 31st and 30th avenue both have a lot of better places to hammer down for lunch or dinner.
$4.50 margaritas and baskets of half priced tacos equals a very Happy Hour. Who cares if the drinks are slightly watered down? Your objective shouldn't be to get shit faced at 7 p.m. Instead, enjoy the heat of the chicken tacos with rajas, the al pastor with pineapple and the sweet bistec while you can still sit outside. Summer is on the outro, but your mood doesn't have to be. I happily licked my salted glass and salsa covered fingers as the sun set on "la playa del" 30th avenue.
Food is average to below average; ordered off their dinner menu
Service needs to be more attentive
Ambiance is nice for happy hour or if you wan to hang out by the bar
Every time I've been, always left feeling unsatisfied 🙁
I love Mexican food, I love BBQ, put the two together and you can imagine my joy. For an Astoria restaurant, MexiBBQ is spacious and has plenty of seating. I had the Mexi Burger and it was delightful – comes with fries and the chipotle aioli was delectable. Washed it down with a nice beer. Definitely recommend this place for a good eat if you're craving a burger, tacos, pulled pork.
