They have a shrine dedicated to George Steinbrenner. That in itself is notable. The decor here is amazing– a mishmash kitschy hodgepodge of everything awesome and cool that you didn't expect to see. "A" for decor.
Service is somewhere between "meh" to poor. Slow, slow, slow. Much confusion. Then you have waiters cursing the puta de su madre or whatever left and right which is, you know, something you want to hear before you even get a chance to look at the menu.
The food is good. Soda and tortilla refills will cost you extra. Mixed drinks are good, but pricey (small glasses, too). Be better off with a pitcher if you are going to drinky drink.
Anyone who knows me will tell you I love Mexican food. I have walked by this place plenty of times, but never had the chance to try it. A friend came back from abroad and suggested this place. They gave us tortilla chips and salsa, which was spicy, finally! You can't always find a good amount of spicy in salsa when you go to a Mexican restaurant.
The food was pretty good, I ordered the chicken fajita and I loved listening to the chicken, peppers and onions sizzle on the skillet, BUT the chicken was a little bit on the dry side. It didn't bother me too much after I wrapped it in the tortilla though. The tortillas were soft, nice and warm too. I loved the guacamole, yum! It was fresh and had the perfect flavor. I gave them one star just for the guacamole! The rice and beans were bland, but it was fresh! I always appreciate fresh food. None of that questionable beans other places serve…My friends seemed happy with their food too, a fajita and a chimichanga? I'm all for a nice ambiance, so it would've been better if they turned down the music. It was so loud that I lost my train of thought at some point and gave up trying to listen to my friends talk, I hope they didn't notice.
Just an overall cluster-f here.
I've ordered take out from here several times and it's decent food.
Stopping in for lunch today resulted in a $40 total bill and just again, average food.
First of all the decor of this place stopped being "cute" to me years ago.
Painted colorful signs with about 200 different margarita choices at various prices in very small font size. Same kinda thing with the menu here. Unnecessarily crowded and confusing. Ended up settle on the chimichangas, which were just ok with very small sides of rice and beans.
Charged me for a refill on my soda, bumping that up to a $5.50 hit. Geeesh.
Overall, this places should focus the choices, and lower the prices.
Wow, I suppose I am a tad spoiled with my Mexican, but even as such, this places food is not exactly what I had in mind. I tend to like good size portions or perfect small ones, lots of flavor and a decent presentation. This place fell short on all aspects. The guacamole and chips were good and that is why I gave this place two stars. The salsa was watery and a little spicy yet totally bland otherwise. The rest of the food seemed skimpy and without much flavor. There are far too many good Mexican restaurants in this area to settle for this quality of food. Peace.
Food was fab and the mango mojito, deelish! Parking in the street is a nightmare. Food portions are small, for the prices they charge. They really get you on the "refills" so just be aware of what you are consuming and the prices…
Ambiance was deliciously fruity. Loved the multi-colored tiling. Fun atmosphere. Loud enough to cover up conversation but not too loud as to drown out my conversation.
Mojito was sour. Not enough sugar, I think. Definitely not an expertly engineered drink. My girlfriend's mango margarita was better.
Chips and salsa were passable. Uninspired. You'd think that the restaurant manager would pay a bit more careful attention to the quality of salsa. Run of the mill.
For the main course I had the "Brisas del Mar" for $21.95. It is described as:
"Red snapper, New Zealand Mussels, scallops, and shrimp cooked in a casserole with green peas and garbanzo beans in an ameyal white sauce."
It came with a small plate with white rice with cheese melted over it and refried beans.
In a word, delicious. I loved every bite. It was delectable and definitely worth the money.
The menu is not cheap. Looking down the menu, I'm seeing prices between $17 and $24. That's kind of pricey for Mexican food. However, if the rest of the menu was as good as the Brisas del Mar, then I'll be back a lot.
After reading the mix review of the restaurant but my friend who have eaten here several times says it is good we decided to try it. Some things where right on from other reviews but on the other hand I'm not sure that they realize they weren't going to a Michelin star restaurant.
As mentioned by others the place is a wonderland of kitsch made in Mexico… It is forever always Valentine's day or is I heart Mexico on the wall? The music is a schizophrenic mix of AC/DC to Pop. On the night we where there, the patrons where serenaded by the sole mariachi singer and his guitar. No complaints on the service. Orders taken quickly. Food came out fairly quickly. Water glass was filled when low.
The food I thought was consistent. The fajita's looked good from what my friends ordered but I still prefer on one from my favorite Mexican in the city. My shrimp Chinconcua was good despite the goopy sauce on it. The Margarita was on the weak side to the ones served you guessed it at my favorite in the city.
On the whole, I would say this branch of Mezcal is better than the one in Park Slope but not better than…wait for it…my favorite in the city! Despite my favoritism, it is still a decent restaurant with good Mexican fare when you are in the Bay Ridge area.
I really like Mezcals, although most people must not because it was pretty dead last time I was here on a Friday night. I arranged a girls night and we enjoyed our share of Margaritas. I always get the veggie enchiladas because they are filling, satisfying and affordable and I love anything with salsa verde.
