The food here is mediocre at best – nothing really worth mentioning. The draw is probably the booze specials. Service isn't the greatest as we requested more chips but never gotten any.
A friend and I chose Mezcal based off its bright, fun-loving design and color scheme. Once inside, the mood was quite the opposite. Mezcal seems more appropriate for a date night.
While the menu is incredibly large, the variations in each type of item are bizarre. I wanted was a burrito with beef and vegetables; but the options for burritos, fajitas, etc. were all either totally plain (just cheese) or absurdly complicated ($25+).
I ended up with fajitas and was pleasantly surprised by the serving size and inclusion of some fixings the menu hadn't mentioned: guacamole, rice, tomatos, lettuce. Unfortunately, the poor quality of the meat in terms of both fattiness and toughness made the meal unenjoyable. The spice levels were also strange. Chips and salsa were on the table, and that salsa was a tear-jerker, yet my meal had no spicy flavor whatsoever.
I'd give Mezcal a second chance for drinks, however. They offer a long list of tequila and rum brands as well as some interesting flavor combinations for margaritas and daquiris. Mango and banana? Mmmmyissss.
I really don't know how this place expanded to have several locations, when all of them are yawn worthy. It brings up questions about our country as a whole… Do we really like crappy Mexican food? Would we rather eat a bland, unimpressive taco than something good? Does this place exist as some kind of sick experiment to see how high the price of a margarita can be raised but still have people order it?
Honestly, I'm not sure if I want to know the answer to some of these…
