Mezquite Restaurant

“The restaurant is BYOB and there's a wine&spirits store just across the street so the lack of a liquor license was not a problem for me.”

“Yes, it's BYOB – but the staff is pretty experienced with making sangria.”

“Try the JALEA and the CEVICHE those were the best in my opinion.”

  1. Wow! What a great find is Astoria. I love Peruvian food and this place has great dishes. We started with the Guacamole and Queso funded. The guac was so fresh and delicious. The perfect heat added with jalopenos. We shared for dinner the Combo capulina. Which came with chicken, salchipapas, rice and a few other sides. The food was so much, too much in fact, we had to take a bag home. At the time we went, it was BYOB, not sure if it still is but it was great. We brought a bottle of wine to enjoy with dinner. Overall a solid meal.

  2. I had the most delicious meal here tonight.  I dare say the chicken was even better than the more popular Peruvian chain (we all know which one I'm talking about). We went all out and got the priciest combination meal (an entire rotisserie chicken, rice, beans, tostones, avocado salad, yuca fries, salchipapas all for $37). It was so very good…and our server  (who is also the manager) was very nice!  There were 3 of us and there are definitely enough leftovers left for at least 2 more full meals.  I'm just going to add that the bathroom at this place was one of the cleanest bathrooms I've ever seen in a restaurant. Love that this place is now in our neighborhood!

  3. Loved this restaurant. First of all its BYOB.  It's not in the terrible parking area of Astoria so that's great.  I started off with the corn on the cob with mayo and cheese.  It was delicious. For dinner I had 1/2 of chicken which came with a salad and rice and beans. The green sauce was delicious.  Everything was great. I would definitely recommend this place.

  4. I'd be interested to dine in, as I feel food brought directly from the kitchen at the ordered temperature would make for an even better protein experience.  However, even with the food continuing to cook in the container while being transported to my door, you get some very solid proteins.

I tried the Mojcajete Mezquite, which is basically their version of a mixed grill. The shrimp were quite big, seasoned well, and had lots of flavor.  The skirt steak was quite good.  Cooked past my ordered medium-rare, though still tender and flavorful, if a bit chewy.  Really good sausage.  The queso, even coagulated, was pleasant.  The corn tortillas on the side nice.

The star, however, was the chicken.  Really good skin, crisp, tender flesh, lovely seasoning.

The 3-star review comes from the sides.  I wasn't sure if the Mojcajete came with sides, as Seamless didn't specify.  So I ordered rice & beans, as well as mashed potatoes.

Both were very bland.  The rice was overcooked and a bit soggy.  The beans were fine.  However, I needed to jazz them up quite a bit to bring out some flavor.

That said, I'm likely to order again and see what other treasures can be found on their menu.

  5. Mexican+Peruvian together? Holy matrimony. I am in love with this place.

Yes, it's BYOB – but the staff is pretty experienced with making sangria. So, you can BYOI (ingredients) if you ask nicely enough.

The food is phenomenal. Some of the best nachos and pollo a la brasa I've ever had. The molcajete platter is good too but should be the only thing you order if you're a party of two or less. The jalea and ceviche were also good. One gripe: our original order of empanadas came cold inside. We sent it back and got a blazing hot one with a smile. It was appreciated.

    Until the next.

  6. Excellent food, excellent service, very nice owner, great value (try the lunch special).  This place is a great local restaurant that I hope will be around for a long time.

  7. Small place, good food, but slow service. Place is byob. Not bad since buying your own is cheaper. For starters our party of 4 had the Guacamole. It was nicely presented in a lava rock served with home made tortilla and chips. Very good actually! For entrees we had the Molcajete, which had a little bit of everything. Which consist of: Grilled skirt steak was my favorite of the whole dish. The 1/4 rotisserie chicken which they were known for was actually very juicy. The shrimp was cooked perfectly. Grilled cactus tasted like a sweet tangy pepper.. very tasty! My least favorite was the chorizo. It tasted weird and the texture was a little mushy. We also had the Jalea which was a platter of fried assorted seafood. It was okay to me. I prefer non fried seafood more.

  8. Came here with my friend from work after looking up Mexican restaurants in Astoria. We narrowed our selection to this restaurant due to the amazing Yelp reviews. We arrived around 5pm, the restaurant was empty with the exception of one patron. We order the empanadas appetizer which was amazing, the chicken filing was a little spicy but good. We both orders the chicken enchiladas, but was sadly disappointed. I didn't realize their "mole pablano sauce" was a chocolate sweet sauce. I was expecting the normal green sauce. The chicken inside the enchilada was very dry and did not have much flavor. The portion was a decent size. My server was attentive, however it did not make up for the lack of flavor from the chicken enchilada. I would most likely not come back, there are better restaurants around!
