“They had amazing assortment of unique flavors—captain crunch, ferrero rocher….but I opted for pistachio & I am addicted ever since.”

“Captain Crunch goes surprisingly well with everything and the flavor reminded me a lot of the cereal soft-serve at Momofuku Milk Bar.”

“Chef Jason let us try a new treat he has been working on called gelato brûlée and it was downright sinful!”

  1. Yay! This gelato making class was so much fun.

Our instructor was really nice and knowledgable. He taught us about gelato and all of the ingredient. He explained why each ingredient is used, etc. It was great. We had a large group and we all got to participate and learn. At the end, we each took home 4 pints of the gelato flavors we made!

It was a great group activity. So happy I went.

  2. It's all about group cooperation in this small and sweet gelato and macaron shop. My friends and I worked two at a station with about ten other people to make small batches of gelato, step by step, and then have it poured into a big bucket and then into a gelato machine. The instructor guided us through, letting us make errors and correct them, guaranteeing that it would all work out just fine. We tasted each batch with wooden spoons, and then we got to take home four pints each, one pint of each flavor.

The class lasted about an hour and forty minutes. It was a little on the pricey side, but still enjoyable.

By the way, if you buy classes on a third-party website, make sure you go to the business website to actually reserve a spot. Someone showed up without having booked a place in the class, and she wasn't able to stay because there was no room. Literally. Again, the shop is small.

  3. I really enjoyed this class! Jason was the instructor, and he was smart, funny, engaging, and informative in explaining the ingredients we would be using, the history or gelato/ice cream, the machinery. It was so thorough. I was expecting the typical class of a demo and getting us started, but he wanted to tell us everything. I could tell he was passionate about gelato and in turn, it made us more excited about learning how to make it.

It's definitely interactive and a group effort with everyone else. it was fun talking with other people and enhanced the experience. Every pair got a scale, a large mixing bowl, and all the ingredients were passed around, and once that was done, the instructor put every batch in a bucket to churn in the machine.

We made four different flavors, but in reality we just made four different base gelato batches, because he added in the flavoring (chocolate, peanut butter, cookies/cream, vanilla) himself. It would have been nice to have done that ourselves, or maybe make a base batch and add our own unique flavors to take home. However, I know that's hard with a group class, and there isn't enough time or machines to churn individual flavors. It was a good learning experience, but lacked any kind if creative input. After he made each flavor, he sent around a cup and small wooden spoons to try.

And, as some other reviews stated, a few of the ingredients we used for our recipe are not easily found in stores, but he did offer substitutions or places to find them. He also explained how to do this with a regular ice cream machine, as opposed to the kitchen grade one.

The class did move quickly, but not in a rushed way. I never felt as if he was speeding through things or ignoring us. He did stop to answer questions whenever someone asked them. I could tell he was trying to keep us moving along, because as newbies, we could sometimes take awhile to measure everything, we would talk a little bit, and if he didn't keep the time in mind, it could easily get out of hand. I do recall finishing a bit early. I thought the class was 2+ hours, but  we were done and waiting for him to pack our gelato pints (each person took home 4), in about 1.5 hours, or a little less.

Be advised this place is tiny! But I didn't feel that got in the way of learning. We weren't on top of each other, nothing got messy, no one bumped into each other. There were a couple small tables to sit around and wait — also a small sink to wash hands, and a bathroom all the way inn the back — while he went downstairs to prep our pints. In the front, with the macaron display, one small table to sit and enjoy the treats. But this seems like more of a grab and go establishment.

One negative is that we didn't get a take home recipe or any other information. Out of all the baking and cooking classes, they usually had a print out of the ingredients and the process, or would at least email us something.

  4. This review is strictly for the class. I've attended the gelato-making class twice and both experiences were just as fun and informative! For both experiences, I bought a Groupon deal for 2 people for $99. The deal comprised of a 2 hour class AND 4 pints of gelato for each person to take home!

Both of my classes for a Friday evening and they started right on time — so be on time for the class! I had a different instructor both times, but they were both really good at providing instructions, guiding us and demonstrating. The 1st time I went, it was actually the owner of the shop who taught it. They made the class extremely fun with the interaction. I won't go thru every detail of the class, but here are some tidbits:

    – 2 individuals per station/bowl
    – Students are asked to create 4 flavors of gelato together. Flavors might vary, but the last time I went, we created French Vanilla, Snickers, Ferrero Rocher and Cookies n' Cream.
    – Each student is allowed to take home 4 pints/canisters of gelato – each pint a different flavor. My recommendation is to bring some type of bag because it's a lot of gelato! If you're doing this class in the summertime, make sure you're able to get the gelato into the freezer quickly after the class or either bring a cooler. I kid you not because they will melt fast.
    – The ingredients, measurements of the ingredients for each flavor of gelato are printed on laminated cards so it's real easy to create the gelato mixtures.
    – Students mixed the ingredients and then gave the instructor their finished mixed products in the bowl, which the instructor poured into the gelato-making machine. Simple as 1-2-3!

As stated, the class was real fun and definitely a great date idea as well. There's plenty of interaction and teamwork involved. Also, don't forget to take pictures as they endorse it!

  5. My friends and I bought a groupon for the gelato making class here and we went recently to do it.  Overall I enjoyed it.  You don't actually do too much, it's mostly pouring and weighing out liquids, but you do learn about gelato.  The guy teaching the class is definitely knowledegable and a little funny.  You work together in pairs so if you go solo or an odd number expect to be paired with someone you don't know.

You make 4 different types of gelato.  I don't think they told us before the class, so you just find out when you get there.  We made: cookies and cream, french vanilla, dark chocolate and snickers.  I thought they all were very good.  You work in pairs pouring out and measuring everything, then it all gets combined and poured into the gelato machine.  After each one is made they pass around a cup so everyone can taste, and then it's packaged up so at the end of the class you get to take home a pint of each flavor.  So you might want to bring a cooler, if you live far away and you don't want it to melt on you.

Overall it was a good class, and nice that you have gelato to bring home afterwards.  I think it's worth it to take if you have a groupon or some deal.  I think normally it's over $100 and it's definitely not worth it for that much.  Much cheaper to come here and just buy some gelato.  They also sell macarons and make macaron ice cream sandwiches!  So go enjoy that!

  6. My friend and I did a gelato making class here, and it was fantastic! We went on a Friday night, and there were maybe three other pairs of two people, a perfect sized class. The instructor gave lots of insightful tips on gelato making, and was very helpful with the step-by-step as we blended our own gelato. It was cool to watch the whole process from start to finish, as well as learn a bit about the science and costs behind it.

At the end of the class, everyone got to take home 4 or 5 pints of gelato – a massive amount. I brought it in to share with coworkers, as it was dangerous to have so much sitting in my freezer! I tried each flavor, and each was more rich and tasty than the next. On the way out, we could sample any other flavors the store had that we wanted to try. This place is a cute spot with a great class – get the Groupon if you can, it's a very good deal for what you get!

  7. We bought a Groupon which included a gelato making class for 2. The instructor begins the session talking about the history of gelato and the ingredients we will be using. Afterwards, he teaches us how to make it. It's a group effort with the rest of the class. Everyone makes one batch and in the end you all pour the batch into the bucket. The down part of it is you don't get to mix in the flavoring or use the gelato machine. This is all done by the instructor. Overall a fun and unique experience and you get to bring home 4 pints of gelato!

This was a simple gelato making class that does not require much prior knowledge of anything! Would recommend!

  8. This review is for the gelato making class which was a great date night activity!  I bought the gelato making class for two people on groupon and booked the date a month in advance.  It's kind of hard to locate since it's inside the whoops macaron store, which is a small spot to begin with.  The area you make the gelato is in the back and each couple gets their own bowl and mixing supplies on this long table.  The class is relatively small, only about 6 or 7 couples total.

The instructor was very knowledgeable and I did learn a thing or two about making gelato and the difference between that and ice cream.   The class is fun because you're making the gelato while interacting with the people near you.   For example, if they add too much of one ingredient, you have to add less.  The best part of the class, eating the gelato of course!  We made the following flavors: vanilla, cookies and cream, chocolate, and snickers.  It was nice getting to sample our work right after we made it.

The class is about two hours long and at the end each person gets to take home a pint of every flavor.  I do have to say, even though the gelato was yummy the next day, it did taste a tad bit better when we ate it in class.   This was a unique date activity and I would definitely recommend it if you're able to purchase the groupon.  Don't forget to bring some type of cooler plus a few bottles of water, I was so thirsty and ended up buying one there.
