Mike’s Deli
“A huge portion of eggplant parmesan ($10) did not disappoint; it was easily some of the best eggplant parm I've ever had.”
“We were handed a few samples of the fresh mozzarella being made behind the counter, and I melted at each bite.”
“I had read that we should try the rice ball too, so we ordered that as well (which was quartered with a slice of cheese on top…mmm).”

Came in on a busy Sunday to find the owner making mozzarella and entertaining the crowd. The mozzarella was amazing, it was perfectly salty and creamy.
We went with a sandwich and their eggplant parmesan. Everything was delicious. We also carried out some meats and cheeses that were recommended by the guy at the counter. We asked for spicy meat and salty cheese, which was what we got. A very well aged provolone I believe and a capicola.
Mikes is definitely what you think of when you think of great Italian deli.
Some of the freshest cut meat goes into their sandwiches which is engulfed between a nice flaky hero. The selection on the menu is huge so you will be guaranteed to find something you like. Also a must……the rice ball with fresh mozzarella and Marana sauce, we had to take some home.
After risking my life trekking from Bronx Zoo through the ghettos to Mike's Deli, I couldn't wait to try this exceptional eggplant parm. I bought into the hype and left disappointed. There are two lines – the counter is for take out only, the line by the tables is for dine in.
Their famed eggplant parm on a hero was such a letdown. The eggplant is microwaved and thrown on a untoasted hero. The sandwich was bland and lukewarm. The bread was cold. Nothing about it was appetizing. We also got the Italian combo on focaccia bread, half a pound of the seafood and meat salad. Those had a little more flavor, but tasted standard to something you can get at any NY deli.
There are too many deli's and sandwich shops in NY to waste your time or calories here.
Came here for a quick lunch. I loved the vibe – Italian family business that cares about the food. Surprising amount of seating in front considering it's within a marketplace. There's also a cute, private seating area upstairs (bathrooms are up there as well).
Overall, I didn't think my sandwich was great, it was good. I got one of their sandwich selections – Sweet Bird but w/ roasted red peppers instead of sun dried tomatoes: turkey, smoked mozz (AWESOME) and roasted red peppers on focaccia. I prefer my focaccia a bit greasier and saltier but maybe that's just me. It felt like it needed something else. Also had escarole & bean soup which was good but needed flavor/salt/pepper.
Staff was friendly.
There's a metered parking lot across the street.
This is definitely a cool cultural experience, especially when you've only been to the Little Italy in Manhattan.
The sandwiches here are really delicious. The portions are big as one sandwich can easily fill up 2 people. Each sandwich also comes with a small side of pasta.
The seating area is limited since it's in the middle of a market.
Mike's Deli is hidden inside the Arthur Avenue Retail Market, along with a bunch of other deli counters, stores, and the Bronx Beer Hall. It is where I have had the best meatball sandwich of my life. The best meatballs, the best sauce, the best cheese, and the best bread all came together to form this lovely sandwich. I was floored, I did not expect a meatball sub to taste so good, but it did. This time when I visited, I waited patiently in line with a friend, listening to the great, old school Italian banter between the people working behind the counter making magic and the customers out front. We were handed a few samples of the fresh mozzarella being made behind the counter, and I melted at each bite. I was all set to get the fabled meatball sub again when the guy behind the counter showed us what he has just made for the customers in front of us and convinced me and my friend to get it, too. An Italian combo sub on a big round roll.
Salami, mortadella, peppers, oil, vinegar, the works. $30 for the two of us total for a sandwich the size and shape of a giant Frisbee, and about 5 inches tall. Cut into fours, we each could only finish one of our two pieces because it was so big and so filling. It was delicious. My only complaint is that the bread that it was served on was a crustier bread, when I am much more a fan of softer breads like the focaccia bread that the meatball sub comes on.
We grabbed a seat and chowed down, and I had a delicious and extremely high-sodium breakfast the next morning.
If you get the eggplant parm hero, highly suggest you ask for it on their foccacia – was very soft and flavorful. Eggplant was perfectly tender and flavorful. Great cheese. Only problem was there was hardly any sauce!
Attended a party in Manhattan with food and bar catered by Mike's. Both food and service were excellent! I ate everything! My family left and I stayed to eat more! I really recommend the fried artichoke! Very soft and delicious. My next trip to NY (with a car) will include a journey to the Bronx to visit Mike's in person! I cannot wait!
