I needed my pizza Friday for lunch, and wanted to try some place new. I found Mike's Pizza through my yelp app. Situated near the 39th Ave. N/Q subway stop, and in the backyard of several hotel chains, there is absolutely no way I would have stumbled upon it otherwise.
I revised my original order of 2 plain slices to 1 plain/1 pepperoni once I saw the fresh pepperoni pie come right out of the oven. I love that they bake the pepperoni on the pie from the beginning instead of tossing cold pepperoni on to a plain slice, and reheating it (which we all know, never works).
I did end up preferring the plain slice to the pepperoni, as the pepperoni quality was low. Both slices skewed towards over-salted, and I love salty food. So those complaints aside, there was a good amount of flavor, and the crust was amazingly thin, almost as thin as Joe's Pizza in the West Village. It's a pretty classic NY pie, so I can definitely see coming back another Friday for lunch.
I had two slices of chicken pizza just now and it was really good. I like the thinner crust. I'll tell you I'll be back.
The service was quick and the pizza was decent. I'd like to try more of their selections based on what I ate.
The place was a pizza joint – but a good one! If you like thin crust pizza you'll like it. It's not excellent but it's good. No ambiance whatsoever but that's fine for a quick meal.
3.5 stars
This pizza place was pretty hard to find, hiding behind a construction zone in the dead industrial/hotel zone of Long Island City (aka the area around 39th Ave N train station). Look for the Quality Inn and head towards that direction.
Not the best pizza in NYC but still pretty good. The slices are thin, just the way I like them. The plain cheese slice needed salt. The veggie slice had just the minimal amount of vegetables to cover the surface. But the crust was perfectly crispy without any burnt edges. I also really appreciated how the pizza was NOT oily. The surface looks matte as if it had already been blotted with a napkin. (That would be silly since I watched them take my slices out from the oven.) My two slices were $6.
The place is not much of a looker. It's pretty old school but clean. I liked their customer service. The woman immediately greeted me from the back once I stepped through the door. I ordered in the back (where the ovens and tables are) and paid in the front (by the entrance). While eating my two slices of pizza, I watched them prepare pie after pie for delivery. It is a delivery place and they're on top of their game. I was impressed with their teamwork.
A great pizza place with some room to hang out. Would have liked to try dessert but oh well. They also conveniently label their spices you can put on the pizza, the first place I have ever seen do this. I like that it's located in an area where there's very little in the way of food places around but there are hungry working people.
Before heading to the airport, we wanted NY pizza. Found this place on Yelp and it had great reviews. The building wasn't anything fancy and when the Uber dropped us off, we didn't have that high of hopes…until we ordered. We ordered the chicken pizza, which was amazing. The chicken was lightly breaded, it was traditional red sauce and cheese. I wish we would have had more time because I would've ordered one to take home! Also had the eggplant roll and pepperoni roll. Huge portions and we were definitely full when we left, and it was so inexpensive! A must-try!
Mike's Pizza is ok. The crust was too hard as if it was an old slice that had been reheated in the oven. It kinda broke apart when I folded it and it cut up the roof of my mouth a little. The flavors were good, but I was disappointed on a whole about the experience.
Been coming here lately for my slice and miscellaneous related snacks and beverages. This has been a frequent stop only because it's close to where I do my thing in the area. It's in an area not so popular. One of those out of your way and caters to the local businesses type of spot. Straight forward an average pizzeria spot with average pizza. But the pizza is decent. And I get to watch television while I eat. A basic family ran spot, with 50/50 on hospitality. Besides pizza, customers can get other dishes including pasta like many other pizzerias. They occasionally make rice balls that are pretty good and meat pizza's loaded with toppings that seam to be there specialty. Though they need to make a decent Sicilian slice which is tiny and lacking. Not much more to add or say about this spot, a decent local pizzeria with extras. The fridge is stock with a good variety of drinks including tiny bottles of wine (fountain soda also available). Chips and snacks can be bought.
The name is so generic sounding.
Restroom available.
Throw out tables and chairs but clean and not crappy to dine on.
Open until usually around 10pm everyday.
