Milanes Spanish Restaurant

“My boyfriend and I both ordered the same thing when we came here for dinner–stewed chicken with yellow rice, black beans, and avocado.”

“I like to get the stewed chicken with rice, beans and plantains or the goat meat with rice and beans.”

“RIce and Beans were authentic, the Maduros were sweet as honey, the Oxtail fell off the bones and the Pernil was full of flavor.”

  1. Nice enough diner or luncheonette.  Counter in front, lots of tables in back.  Quite busy which is a good sign.  Dominican place.  What is mofongo anyway?

For breakfast today I had French Toast with a side of bacon.  I was a happy camper.  Decent coffee.  Prices are moderate; service is friendly and efficient.  Might be my new favorite place for breakfast on the weekend.

The seating is more attractive than your average diner.  I will post a pix soon.

  2. I hate writing about these little hidden gems. I'm deathly afraid they'll become too popular, or get big heads, or somehow become something different when I really want them to stay exactly like they are. So, I didn't feel like anyone here spoke a lick of English. And my Spanish – not so good.

Didn't matter. The food here is some of the best we've had so far. The highlight was probably the pernil (roast pork) and the maduros (sweet plaintains). Also tried the cuban sandwich which I really enjoyed, and the fried chicken chunks (tasty but wish they used dark meat instead of white). Copious amounts of rice and beans. Just really, really tasty.

Hate writing about them but gotta give them their props. I'll cross my fingers that they never change.

  3. "Do you just go into every sketchy looking restaurant?" I asked my coworker when he showed another coworker and me this place and assured us it's good. "Yep, that's exactly it," he replied.

He has not led me astray in the past when taking me to hole-in-the-wall cash-only joints around Chelsea and the Fashion District, so I trusted him yet again. And boy am I glad I did. I had one of those meals that I keep stuffing in my face because I can't get enough of it.

First order of business: ask the waitress about the daily specials. They are listed on the print menu, but only certain ones are available each day. I got the stewed chicken with rice and beans. Other options include yellow or white rice with black or red beans, but I was intrigued by the beans and rice already mixed. Man, that was a good choice.

My coworkers got the spare ribs and the oxtail and they both ate everything except the bones, too.

    Tips:

Ask for the house hot sauce. It's not too spicy and is hella flavorful.

Get a side of plantains for a dollar to share. Dip them in black beans.

    No credit cards.

That's about it. Now go try some Dominican food yourself!

  4. Lunch time induces three co-workers to flock for Spanish cuisine at Milanes.

This review is based entirely on takeout without my physical presence.  Spaghetti with yellow rice for takeout at $8.00 was plentiful without question as there is no skimming on quantity.  The Spaghetti was tasty but the yellow rice was rather salty.  Takeout menus are readily available but not business cards.  This establishment conduct sale transactions without sales receipts for any record of purchases, ergo I was without a receipt.

No comment on facilities (if any) nor customer service of Milanes staff.

  5. I went there, cause I had to see a show near by and I didn't feel like going to the regular chain places offered to me in this area. My banker recommended Milanes and when I saw the place, I knew the food would be excellent.
It is a restaurant that caters for the more ethnic customer, and if you never had Spanish food and don't feel like trying, this isn't chipotle.
It s a very simple place, and reminds me of a workers' cafeteria. The customers are simple and even the menu is straight forward. Most dishes are meat and rice.
My friend had the chicken stew and I had the goat stew, both served with your choice of rice. We both had rice and beans, and that was the authentic recipe.
We loved our food and though I speak Spanish, I only spoke English because I didn't want my friend to feel alienated. The waitresses, did speak English, so all was good that way.
The decor is very simple and is intended to be efficient, as the restaurant fits many people and serve many people at lunch time.
Prices are great, and you can for sure leave full for under 10 bucks, so it is a place to know and to try.

  6. A-ok by me! Great place for breakfast and more than suficient for lunch. Admittedly only three stars because delivery is pretty damn slow. Food is fresh, well seasoned and delicious.

They do not accept credit cards so come prepared with cash. Facilities are adequate and service is effective and prompt–aside from delivery.
    Try it out!

  7. I wasn't going to write a review for Milanes, because it is a hidden gem & I like hidden gems to stay hidden so I can enjoy them all to myself (evil laugh). But that's not so nice right? This place is wonderful for lunch & an early dinner. The food feels like something mom would make if your mom is from the Dominican, and the prices are great. I like to get the stewed chicken with rice, beans and plantains or the goat meat with rice and beans. I have no idea what else to get and the staff here don't really speak English but with these two options you can't go wrong :).

  8. My friends and I stopped over Milanes Spanish Restaurant for a late lunch.  The food is cheap.  And there's a pic of Bobby Flay with the staff posted right outside.  So it must be good right?

It was just okay.  Or maybe I just wasn't hungry for it when I was there.  I had the chicken soup with rice, but I misunderstood the 'with rice' part thinking the rice was in the soup.  Nope, it came with a huge bowl of rice.  Not a bad thing though, just was a little surprised.  The soup was actually pretty good though, the broth was very comforting.  I probably could've used more chicken meat in the soup though, it was mostly bones.

One thing pretty interesting during our visit.  Apparently, they stand by their avocados here.  The waitress sounded so surprised when everyone at our table turned down the avocado recommendation.

    Waitress:  "Avocado?"
    Me: No Thanks
    Waitress:  "No??!!"
Repeat this 4 more times around the table with my friends.  It was pretty funny actually.

I think if I had another day in NYC, I probably would've gone back for another go since it was conveniently down the street from my hotel.  Their Cubano Sandwich does look awesome, so when I come back to NYC, I'll probably consider stopping over for that and maybe with a side of avocado.
