Food is ALWAYS great. They make everything fresh and delicious. The fresh mozzarella is just fantastic and made on premises. Daily specials including pasta, sausage and peppers. Their prosciutto on fresh Italian hero can't be beat. Go and try them, eat up it is good.
Food: 4/5 Stars
Service: 3 Stars
I'll start with the good; the sandwiches are fresh, authentic and huge. They have a lot of flavor in em but can get messy at the same time. I ordered the sausage parmigiana and it was quite tasty and very filling for a lunch.
Now the reservations, the cashiers are quite slow and rude. They don't take credit cards under $10. The place is very darkly lit and the refrigerated section doesn't look very fresh. Table seating is very limited, the chairs and tables look very dilapidated.
The reason I pushed this to a four star rating is because they also gave free garlic dough bites (?) at the end of the line and they were so tasty. Otherwise, this would probably be a 3 star in my book.
I was in the area on a work assignment and decided to check this place out. When I walked in it was jam packed at least 30 people in the store. The store itself was small with a few tables to dine in. However, I decided to take the food back to the office. Granted I came in during lunch so it wasn't a surprise it was packed. There is no table service because you order, get your food, pay then, sit down and eat your food. No tips involved which is nice.
The workers got the line moving quickly so that was good. I ordered the special of the day which was a chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, romaine lettuce with balsamic dressing on a sub roll. It was a huge portion which two people could eat but I ate the whole thing. Sandwiches doesn't really taste good the following day. It was decent size that tasted good. Just keep in mind there is no parking and you have to find off street parking. This place doesn't write prices on specials so they can charge you what they want which I did not like at all. Overall, nice small deli with a variety of sandwiches and entrees.
My love affair with this place is officially over, and here is why. I have been going here for lunch 1-2x a week for months. My last time in, they packed my pasta badly and as I walked down the street the sauce went all over my pants and jacket. When I went in to get it re-packed, no apology, no offer to comp the meal to make up for my dry cleaning expense. When I mentioned that this is bad business, the guy behind the counter told me to "talk to the wall", that it was his decision, not mine. I told him that if that was his decision, mine was to take my business elsewhere and to tell everyone in my office what their business practices were (in addition to charging different prices for the same items almost every time we go in there).
He started screaming at me, burst out of the deli's front door and followed me out to the street, screaming IN MY FACE,backing me up against a wall. Hey, that's assault! I didn't have my phone on me but was ready to call the cops on this lunatic. I think the only thing that kept him from punching me out was the crowd gathered nearby. I should have pressed charges!
I will never spend another dime of my money in that deli. No matter how good the food is. What a terrible, terrible way to run a business. I don't care what he thought I said or did, I did not deserve to be assaulted on the street by this nutjob.
This is a great classic Italian deli. No frills – just excellent high quality food.
I've gone here a enough times to know the food is consistent. Everything looks good, everything smells good, and they have a wide variety of hot and cold foods.
As far as service goes, I've read some negative reviews and I disagree. The people here are efficient and knowledgeable – they just do not pamper you. If you're some needy ass customer who wants all the attention in the world maybe you should stay away from crowded Italian deli's around lunch time. Also, if you're holding up the very long line fumbling through your slow thoughts while you should be ordering, people probably will be rude to you, and you'll deserve it.
I'd highly recommend this place to friends if they are in the area.
Small place, huge lunch business. They move fast, expect a 'soup nazi' type of ordering atmosphere. One second pause and everyone will look at you funny, including other regular customers. The portions are huge for the price and the food is pretty good.
There are a good amount of tables to fit the lunch crowd that wants to eat in, most people are doing take out.
Worth checking out for a quick sandwich for lunch.
Great lunch option when I worked in JC.
Do not be discouraged by the lines. There are 2; a hot and cold line. The cold line obviously goes faster. You can honestly pick anything off the menu and be more than satisfied. Ginormous sandwiches that are enough for your lunch and dinner… or afternoon snack! I've enjoyed the tuna sandwich and the italian sub. The bread is pretty substantial so don't be shy to add some oil and vinegar if that's what you like.
Definitely add this to your lunch mix in Jersey City.
Nice stop when I am in the area. Located right up the street from Exchange Place. They are open for breakfast and lunch. I enjoy the chicken bruschetta plate. They offer several hot lunch specials daily plus cold sandwiches.
